Part of becoming a politician, the most important part, was actually making good on one's campaign promises. This very lofty goal was one Helen fully intended to aspire to and now that everyone was their correct age and gender and not trapped in an underwater city, she thought it might be a good time to start drumming up interest in her ( Read more... )

"If I reprogrammed the nanobots with a core sample of your current genetic sequence then I could eradicate the radiation damage and restore- are you playing bejeweled again?" Nikola asked, folder in hand. Nikola had also thought of the other benefits of the nanobots but he wasn't going to tell Helen that, Helen tended to get annoyed whenever he tried to resurrect the Vampire race.

"I don't know what you're talking about," Helen said, and it was half-true. She didn't have radiation poisoning here on the island and she hardly was going to consent to nanobots carrying around bits of her DNA for Nikola's purposes. That it served to cover her embarrassment about Bejeweled was simply an added benefit.

Nikola raised an eyebrow at her, lips curling into a self satisfied sneer as he walked around her desk.

"The finest mind in Britain reduced to a game of matching jewels in a row. I wonder if James spent hours playing this mindless- there, that red one." Nikola said sitting on the corner of her desk as he glanced at the screen pointing. "About the nanobots? Green one."

"I can do it without your help, Nikola," Helen said crossly, begrudgingly taking the moves he suggested. "And no on the nanobots. Absolutely not. And you know James liked to play chess because I was horrid at it."

Trixa lounged in the doorway, a smirk on her face. Helen was awfully fond of her Bejeweled, wasn't she? Speaking from her perch, she kept her voice light, teasing, with just a hint of a threat. The idea was an amusing one, but one Trixa didn't quite think she was suited to.

"I would love being a mentor, Helen, but I'm pretty sure you don't want my skill set propagated amongst the impressionable youth here."

At the sound of Trixa's voice, Helen closed the laptop and looked up with a smile. She was excessively fond of Trixa, actually, and didn't necessarily think bartending was a bad skill to learn, in the scheme of things. Not being a surgeon, certainly, but it was something Helen herself wouldn't mind learning.

"I beg to differ. We'll all continue to need to drink even after all the bartenders have disappeared. Perhaps more than usual."

"Ha. Bartending wasn't exactly what I had in mind, but we'll go with that."

She came into the room and took a seat next to her friend, that devilish grin still on her face. Helen was an odd one, a good-odd, but odd nonetheless and even moreso after Trixa's chats with Tesla. Which brought up a new topic of conversation. She was finding Helen's and Tesla's lives to be very interesting with each little nugget of information she uncovered.

"So, this Tesla guy? Helen, your taste in friends..."

"Dear God, what has he told you? I told Nikola to keep his ruddy mouth shut and now he's gone telling everyone my business, I'm sure."

Still, it was no reflection on Trixa whom she liked and trusted enough not to immediately panic that Nikola may have spilled some of her more...unsavory secrets.

"Nikola and I went to school together."

Danny knocks on the door of the vet's office before he enters because that is just something that polite adults do. They knock on doors. He offers a half-smile and tries to phrase his apology before anything else. "I swear to god, it's just because I was eighteen. I know I was insufferable, I know, and I'm sorry."

"You were nothing of the sort," Helen assured him. "And if you were, I only laughed a bit in absolute privacy. Of course, if you feel like apologizing, I do take payment in alcohol."

"I don't have alcohol. I've got a lot of fingerpaintings, a lot of sand, and the occasional good meal at home now that the both of us are making concerted efforts," Danny admits as he wanders into the room uninvited, flopping down into a chair and sprawling out. "So, how's Will?"

"Quite happy to have his penis back, all things considered. I suppose that mentioning one is bisexual is likely not wise when one's boyfriend has just become a woman," Helen said, smirking a bit. "And how are you? Any lasting effects from your weekend as the fairer sex?"

"I'm quitting the medical field to join the ballet," Sam announced as he entered into Helen's office.

"Alright, not really, especially since there isn't a ballet," he added. "But do I need to fill out any paperwork to make my apprenticeship official?"

"I shouldn't think so," Helen said, beaming at Sam as he entered. "It just depends on whether you want to be patient and at the mercy of my own schedule or if you would prefer a different doctor to be apprenticed to. I had thought to ask Dr. House if he'd mind taking you on, if that was suitable? He's a bit...prickly, but I think you'll do fine."

"He's a complete ass," Sam said, matter of factly. He would rather world with Dr. McCoy than House. Actually, since his recent stay in the clinic Sam actually didn't mind Dr. McCoy. Not that he would tell McCoy that.

"I'd rather just work with you and Dr. McCoy, if that's alright?"

"Then I won't be subjecting you to Dr. House, then," Helen said, laughing a bit. "If it's all the same to you, go ahead and shadow me during my clinic shifts and I will...talk with Dr. McCoy and see if he'd like to let you shadow him as well. There's also the matter of curriculum, you'll need a good strong base in biology, chemistry and anatomy before you can get anywhere close to actually practicing."

Helen paused and smiled. "I have every confidence you'll do brilliantly, Sam."

He'd been meaning to come see her about taking on more duties at the veterinary clinic, but now he had twice the reasons to go and half the reasons to keep procrastinating, especially with Toothless butting at him impatiently like that.

"Helen," he waved. "Hey. So I was just looking at your sign and um..."

Hiccup swallowed and realize that this must have sounded pretty presumptuous. "I want to be an apprentice? For animal medicine?"

"I would have expected no less, Hiccup, and I'm glad you still want to work with me," Helen said, laughing lightly. "I would have thought I'd have scared you off by now. I'm an insufferable tyrant, don't you know."

Helen was very fond of Hiccup, actually, and found him to be bright and engaging and willing to learn.

Hiccup grinned and shook his head. Helen was stern, but she wasn't a six-foot wall of dragon-punching human. Or his father. Either way, he respected both of them.

"I still want to learn. Then I can take care of Toothless and help out other animals too."

"I can't say I'm not delighted to hear that," Helen said, beaming a little at him. "I really think you'll probably be better at it than I am someday, at least, I hope you will. I want that."

Helen canted her head slightly. "And where is Toothless this afternoon?"
