Boring. If there was one word to describe the island, that definitely had to be it. Nice weather and a couple of tiki bars might have seemed exciting for the middle-aged set, but for seventeen year-old Pepper Potts, it was like being in exile. There was nothing to doThis was why when the subject of prom of come up between Karen and herself, the two ( Read more... )

She doesn't know why she's there. She doesn't know why she's put on a nice dress, except that the idea of going to a dance and putting on a short little pink thing appeals to her and her need to get away from all this insanity about how she's supposed to be older and things try to kill her and she doesn't want to think about it. Not at all, not even for a second. Instead, she's standing in the middle of a room decorated like her high school gym (or one of them, considering she's seen a lifetime's worth, what with Dad moving her around).

"Okay," she says to herself. "You can do this, Sarah."

In all her books, Belle had come across the notion of 'Prom' more than once. It seemed like a lovely little rite of passage, one that she sometimes wished had been about in her time, if only for the experience. Belle was still reeling with the knowledge of those dearest to her being so different and it seemed a wonderful escape to put on something absolutely silly and show up at a dance.

Which, really, explained the black tights she was wearing and the bright yellow shirt-dress atop. If her reading was any kind of right, she supposed that part of prom was the regrettable fashion choices and right now, Belle thought she had nothing to lose.

Jacob liked going to dances with Belle. Jacob liked going to dances with Belle when he was Jacob and not Jakerina or whoever he'd been stuck with for the weekend. He'd ended up getting into a dress, some short black thing, but he hated it on principle. Still. It was prom and Belle was his date.

"Care to dance?"

"I would love to," she said enthusiastically, grasping at his hand and pulling him closer. She couldn't even begin to hide how giddy this whole thing made her. "I can't believe how short you are. I think, for once, I don't have a permanent crick in my neck."

"Yeah, I'm kind of not digging the weather down here," Jacob said dryly. "I'll be glad to have my old body back, believe me. I don't know, I'm just...small."

At first, Alexis hadn't wanted to go to the impromptu Prom because she didn't have a date. But she'd thought about it, and really, when had she ever needed to be on the arm of a guy to have fun? Her friends were going to be there, and she was sure she'd have an awesome night with them.

So she'd found herself a really pretty dress, and she'd helped a newly female Billy pick out something nice to wear as well. Now here she was in the gym, drinking a glass of punch and looking around for her friends.

Belle saw Alexis across the room and made a point to gravitate there as quickly as she could, punch in hand and cupped protectively tight. "You have no idea how good it is to see someone else that's normal," she admitted with a laugh. "Unless you're not Alexis, in which case, I am so sorry for the confusion."

"No, I'm Alexis," she confirmed, laughing as well, "though I guess right now it doesn't hurt to check. Hi, Belle! You look really pretty. Is Jake with you? Or, I guess I should ask - is he normal right now?"

"He's here, but he's not normal," Belle said, wiggling her finger as she pointed in the direction that she'd last seen Jacob. "I'd get all your teasing in now, seeing as he's a normal height. It's almost frightening, I don't have to look up in order to talk to him."

Zoe had been hoping for a party, and she should have known that the people of the island would provide. The clothes box provided, too, and she had a shiny red dress with the right amount of sparkle and a long skirt that flared pleasing around her ankles when she spun in a circle.

So here she was a party, all fancified, and she had no idea what to do with herself.

Reynald is entirely unclear on just what goes on at this sort of thing. (And his dad, being now ten years old and utterly uninterested in dances, wasn't a whole lot of help.) But maybe Zoe knows more about it than he does, though from the look of things, it involves twirling in circles.

"Hello," he says. "You look like a princess. Or a mermaid."

Zoe spun around again and laughed, delighted at the idea of being a mermaid. "If I was a mermaid, I'd live in a giant sandcastle with lots of starfish and play hide and seek in the seaweed with the fish."

Her mother had told her stories of a friend who'd been a mermaid, so she knew it was possible.

"I don't think they dance, though. No legs."

"Oh, they can probably dance," Reynald says, thoughtful. "Just, only in water. I expect it looks lovely. But you're right, a tail wouldn't be terribly useful here."

Reynald has no idea what he's doing here, but here he is, all the same. His brain seems a bit confused about how old he should feel--his body is quite sure it belongs to a man grown, sixteen at least, but his brain just isn't in the habit of being a teenager. So here he is, dressed up and ready to get down. Whatever 'getting down' is. Hopefully, his brain supplies, it means biscuits.
