Clearly the idiot who had written 99% of the dog training books the bookshelf had to offer had never had a pet direwolf. When Susan had given him the pup, Jack had been pleased. After all, her own direwolf was well-behaved and gorgeous, so why shouldn't the pup be the same way? Jack had even given him a good, strong name and everything was for the ( Read more... )

River saw the huge canine bearing down on Zoe, toddling along a little ways ahead of her, and hurried to stop him before he could knock her over.

Simon Chicago, however, was there first. He planted himself between the girl and the wolf, and gave a sharp bark of warning to the unruly pup potentially threatening his small human charge.

"Puppy!" squealed Zoe.

Simon Chicago gave Jack enough time to lope up the path and snag Thor and while he eyerolled at the wolf, it was fond. His grin was a hell of a lot fonder for River and little Zoe, two of his favorite people on the island.

"Thanks. Susan's behaved a lot better than this guy. Good wolf, doesn't bite, but God can he run."

"I think direwolves are a lot of work to train. Simon Chicago's only part regular wolf, and it took a lot of time to get him to do what I want most of the time. It's probably because they're so big. Makes them stubborn." It was only a theory, but based on observation of large humans as well as their animal counterparts.

River let Thor give her hand a good sniff, and scratched his ears. Simon Chicago didn't seem to like this at all, and continued to block the baby's access to the young wolf.

"Thor's stubborn enough for three wolves," Jack agreed. "I guess it'd be easier if I had another wolf that could help keep him in check but Cash is so laid back he doesn't care to chase Thor around when he knows eventually the mutt's going to come home."

He grinned at Zoe. "And how's Miss Zoe today? Getting into trouble?"

"If only I could run that fast." Robb had caught sight of the streak of wolf, and it's familiar enough. "Or you either."

Grey Wind can, but the big wolf--this one's grandsire? Robb cannot always keep track so well as he should--looks more interested in watching the humans waste their energy. Then, having had enough two-legged entertainment, he moves quick as a shadow into the smaller wolf's path.

Jack recognized the guy as someone from Susan's family...maybe the brother-in-law? Hard to keep track and he knew it wasn't the brother, Edmund. The wolf was a welcome sight, though, because if anything could catch Thor, it'd be another giant wolf.

"He's...exuberant. Susan didn't warn me that could happen with these guys."

Grey Wind lets out a short, sharp, now you see her child stop behaving this way bark. Robb looks after them. "Well, they do start out as puppies."

"See? I want one like yours. Fully trained," Jack teased, watching how Thor bowed down to the older wolf. "You're from there, aren't you? Where the wolves come from? Susan didn't tell me a lot about that. I think...I think she'd lost too many people before we met."

"Uh-uh, I'm not chasing him," Sam said, shaking her head. She was quick enough, but no match for a wolf at top speed. "He'll come back when he feels like it." Thor tended to do whatever he wanted, just like his Asgard namesake--while he didn't randomly beam people up on a whim, he was pretty stubborn.

Jack grinned and tilted his head toward the compound. "You wanna go have a festive beverage while we wait on him to decide he's hungry and head home? I at least managed to get him trained enough to know that I'm the one that feeds him."

"I'll settle for something cold," she said, thinking it was probably better not to chance it with something 'festive'. Just in case. "You think he'll be okay running around with that leash hanging off his neck?" Not that it would matter, since neither of them could really catch Thor if he didn't want to be caught.

"Might better try to get it off him, huh?" Jack asked, wondering how, exactly, he was going to manage that when the damn wolf wouldn't get close enough to him for him to make a grab for it. "You got any ideas on how to make that happen, Carter?"

When Jonas heard Colonel O'Neill call out, he turned from where he was walking down the path away from the Compound and barely had time to drop his armful of books before Thor breezed by him. Not really thinking, he put his foot out to step on the leash, so the large canine would be forced to pause, giving Jonas a second to reach down with his hands to catch the leash before Thor started up again.

"Hey Thor." Jonas said with a laugh as he scratched the wolf's head. "Giving the Colonel trouble again?" He glanced up with a grin as said Colonel came running up.

"How in the hell did you do that, Quinn? I've been chasing that thing halfway across the island."

It was grateful, though, considering he had been running after him for a while. "Should I add wolf-wrangling to your list of earth-acquired skills?"

"It was just a matter of catching the leash, sir." Jonas said with bashful smile as he knelt down to better pet the happy wolf puppy. Praise from the Colonel always meant a lot to him, even this one. "And no, I can't say I ever did any wolf-wrangling on Earth. They barely let me out of the base."

"Well. If we ever get back, I'm gonna have a word with them," Jack said firmly, shaking his head at how easy Thor seemed with Jonas. Maybe the guy had some tricks he just didn't know about.

"Say, you never ran into the Asgard back home, did you? I named Thor for...you know. That Thor."

Despite how the island seemed to crawl with direwolves sometimes, Hiccup was surprised that this was the first one he'd seen besides Grey Wind. Where Grey Wind was quiet and watchful, perhaps with good reason in Hiccup's case, this one seemed to be happily running at full tilt right toward him. Without thinking too far ahead, Hiccup jogged toward it, slightly to its right, hoping to feint left at the last second and maybe grab it by the collar.

Luckily, Hiccup had befriended a dragon much smarter than his human. Seeing Hiccup apparently running toward a perceived predator, Toothless quickly shot down from the tree where he'd been resting, landing on the ground with the barest sound. Teeth bared, but not growling, he spread his wings as if he meant to net the direwolf coming his way.

"Hey! Toothless! What!? No!" Hiccup protested, trying to find a way around or under the dragon's outstretched wings. "That is not necessary!"

"Whoa!" Jack yelled. He hadn't figured on a dragon showing up and while Thor seemed perfectly happy to bounce over to it, Jack was more worried about the kid stuck between them. Hazard of living on the island, he guessed, but damn.

"Thor! Come here. Leave the kid alone."

When the direwolf approached instead of attacking, Toothless immediately lowered his wings, though his teeth were still out. He snorted at the wolf and tilted his head at it, looking up at Jack as if to scold him.

Hiccup glanced between the three of them and offered up his usual sheepish smile. "Hey, uh, sorry 'bout that! He doesn't really know direwolves so, you know, he...did what he does."

"No problem," Jack said, taking the opportunity to snag Thor by the collar. "If this guy wouldn't run off all the time he wouldn't run into angry dragons, now would he?"

For his part, Thor looked almost apologetic. Or begging. Either or.

"I'm Jack. What's your name, kid?"
