Clearly the idiot who had written 99% of the dog training books the bookshelf had to offer had never had a pet direwolf. When Susan had given him the pup, Jack had been pleased. After all, her own direwolf was well-behaved and gorgeous, so why shouldn't the pup be the same way? Jack had even given him a good, strong name and everything was for the ( Read more... )

"If only I could run that fast." Robb had caught sight of the streak of wolf, and it's familiar enough. "Or you either."

Grey Wind can, but the big wolf--this one's grandsire? Robb cannot always keep track so well as he should--looks more interested in watching the humans waste their energy. Then, having had enough two-legged entertainment, he moves quick as a shadow into the smaller wolf's path.

Jack recognized the guy as someone from Susan's family...maybe the brother-in-law? Hard to keep track and he knew it wasn't the brother, Edmund. The wolf was a welcome sight, though, because if anything could catch Thor, it'd be another giant wolf.

"He's...exuberant. Susan didn't warn me that could happen with these guys."

"See? I want one like yours. Fully trained," Jack teased, watching how Thor bowed down to the older wolf. "You're from there, aren't you? Where the wolves come from? Susan didn't tell me a lot about that. I think...I think she'd lost too many people before we met."

Robb laughs. "He was smaller than that, once, and just as excited. He's getting to be an old man, now." Grey Wind accepts Thor's surrender graciously, if sternly. "Yes, they're Westerosi direwolves, from north of the Wall. That's one of Shadow's pups?"

"Yeah, Susan gave him to me," Jack said, reaching out to pet Thor when he finally deigned to trot back over to him. Seems the other one had put him in his place. "I used to help her with Rickon sometimes so she gave me to him as a thank you present."

Robb nods; he hasn't been able to keep track of all the litters of direwolf pups that will no doubt take over the island by the time Reynald's grown. "Grey Wind's both his uncle and grandsire, then."

"Good strong stock, then," Jack said, tipping his head appreciatively at the older wolf. "Guessing that one probably came in handy with all the medieval battles and stuff, right?"

Maybe he shouldn't be asking him about this, old war wounds, but Jack had never been to where this guy was from and he liked to have a picture in his head for reference's sake.
