Daniel was sitting in the rec room, waiting for Vala to come back from the doctor's. He'd offered to keep William occupied while Vala got checked out. He wasn't sure what they'd be able to do. Maybe the nanobots. Maybe they had something else that would be able to spark that memory, but seeing her expression when she'd first seen William, ( Read more... )

Jack watched the little boy grope for blocks and he grinned at the sight of Daniel with him. It was adorable.

"Got stuck babysitting? Is Vala out treasure hunting again?" he asked as he came closer.

Daniel didn't look up at Jack, although his back tensed. "I've been gone all weekend," he said quietly. "And Vala's in the clinic." He supposed he didn't have to tell Jack where he'd been gone.

"Oh, no. Is she okay?" Jack asked. He'd been aware of the newest round of island cruelty but he hadn't realized that it had happened to Daniel and Vala.

"She doesn't remember anything," Daniel answered quietly enough that it was almost under his breath. "Not me, not the island, not William. Nothing."

These days, one of the few things that could still make Bill smile almost without fail was an ankle biter, and he gave a small grin as he walked into the rec room and saw Daniel with William.

"Bonjour, Daniel," he greeted, going to crouch by the pair. "What have we got here? Are you learning your letters, William? Well done."

"Bien remplies," Daniel replied quietly. "He is. We're waiting for his mother to get back." He reached over and smoothed a hand over William's back. "There was a bit of a problem this weekend."

"Problem?" Bill shifted his gaze to Daniel, frowning slightly. "What sort of problem? Were you sent somewhere during the weekend as well?"

"Vala and I were, yes." Daniel sighed. "And by the time we got back, Vala had lost her memory. She doesn’t remember anything or anyone, which is why I'm out with William."

"If he says 'B is for Bloody' I will find Spike and...well, I doubt I'll be able to do anything but I'll make a good attempt at kicking him." Xander teased from the kitchen. He'd come in to get some lunch before heading off to do some repairs at the Club and had over heard Daniel and William in the rec room. With his sandwich finally made, he took a big bite as he walked into the rec room.

Daniel managed a weak smile. "No, I'm fairly sure he and Spike haven't had contact since he, ahh, returned." He looked up at Xander. "There's something you should know. About Vala. She doesn't remember anyone. Anything. I may need help looking after him when I'm teaching, at least until she gets her memory back." If she got her memory back.

"Good. Peroxide Brains is better off out of the picture." It was definitely a change for Xander to speak out against Spike, but then he didn't get along nearly as well with this Spike then the last. Complete 360 in fact.

In fact, he was going to go into a longer Spike rant as he took a seat on the floor next to them, offering a piece of fruit to William in a preemptive strike before he came for the rest of Xander's lunch. But Daniel stopped him and for a moment, Xander could only stare. "Well hey, you know I'm always good for babysitting the little man but back up for a sec. What's this about Vala and not remembering anything?"

Daniel very vehemently agreed with that. Spike hadn't made a terribly good first impression and the more he'd heard, the less he'd liked. It was almost a relief when he'd disappeared and very much a relief when he came back and didn't remember either Vala or William.

He took a deep breath. "We went back home and things...she got her memory wiped. And it stuck when we woke back up."

Sporting a cigarette behind his ear (he was truly, truly bloody tired of people telling him this was a 'non-smoking' area), Guy walked by with a stack of books ready to be dismissed to the book shelf.

"B is an important letter," he said as he approached the scene, in that wonderfully annoying tone people used when talking to children. "A lot of fun things start with the letter B."

"Behave yourself, Guy," Daniel replied archly. There was, however, no corresponding smile like there would normally be. He didn't really feel up to smiling yet. "You and I will have to have words if you teach William anything he shouldn't know yet."

The lack of playful smile on Daniel's part was surprising. Chiding but amused, Daniel always smiled. "Boat. Boats are fun..." He thought of words. "Ball - for sports, of course... Banana- Daniel, is something the matter?" He asked when Daniel remained serious.

"Vala...she and I went home. To a place where she'd lost her memories and she did again. We got pulled back before we could get to the doctor to help her retrieve them. She doesn't remember me. She doesn't remember the island." Daniel sucked in a sharp breath. "She doesn't remember her son, Guy."

"Smart kid," Sam said, as William grabbed the block with the B on it. It didn't bother her to be around kids, anymore, like it had for a little while, and Sam was glad. She'd always gotten along well with kids, and William was no exception.

At the sound of Sam's voice, Daniel left William with the blocks and stood up. "Just like his…" He couldn't manage to say Vala's name and, instead, he hugged Sam tightly. He still wasn't sure that he could believe that Vala didn't even know her son. He knew that he didn't want to believe it.

"Hey..." The sudden hug surprised her, but she hugged him right back, concerned. "What's going on?" she asked quietly. "Something happened?"

"Do you remember the mission where Vala lost her memory? Where she ended up handcuffing Mitchell to the bed?" Daniel's voice was shaky and he held tight to Sam. "We just went through that again. And Vala doesn't remember anything."
