Daniel was sitting in the rec room, waiting for Vala to come back from the doctor's. He'd offered to keep William occupied while Vala got checked out. He wasn't sure what they'd be able to do. Maybe the nanobots. Maybe they had something else that would be able to spark that memory, but seeing her expression when she'd first seen William,

These days, one of the few things that could still make Bill smile almost without fail was an ankle biter, and he gave a small grin as he walked into the rec room and saw Daniel with William.

"Bonjour, Daniel," he greeted, going to crouch by the pair. "What have we got here? Are you learning your letters, William? Well done."

"Bien remplies," Daniel replied quietly. "He is. We're waiting for his mother to get back." He reached over and smoothed a hand over William's back. "There was a bit of a problem this weekend."

"Problem?" Bill shifted his gaze to Daniel, frowning slightly. "What sort of problem? Were you sent somewhere during the weekend as well?"

"Vala and I were, yes." Daniel sighed. "And by the time we got back, Vala had lost her memory. She doesn’t remember anything or anyone, which is why I'm out with William."

"Bloo-erm, that's terrible," Bill said, quickly amending what he was saying in the presence of little ears. "Is she over at the clinic?"

Daniel nodded. "Yeah, I took her over there almost as soon as she woke up. I wanted to make sure she had the best possible care, but...they don't have what it was that helped her regain her memory the last time."

"What helped her regain her memory the last time?" Bill asked, curious.

[theunascended]

"There was some kind of device that Dr. Lam had at the base." Daniel shook his head. "I'm not entirely sure what it was, but I doubt it's anything that we have here." There were a lot of Goa'uld devices that they had back at the SGC that they didn't have here. He just never thought he'd feel their loss.

"No, I reckon not," Bill replied, swiping a hand over the lower half of his face. "Well, there has to be something that can be done, I'm sure." It was possible he was trying to convince himself as much as Daniel.

"They could. Back home. We woke up just before the procedure started. She was terrified, Bill. When she woke up here, she accused me of all kinds of things because how could I really explain the island without sounding absolutely crazy?" He'd never been very good at those introductions and it was even worse because he'd come to expect that of course Vala knew about the island.

"I can't imagine what that'd be like, not able to remember," Bill mused. Well, he could imagine, and had, had considered what it would be like to be on the wrong end of an obliviate. Imagining probably paled in comparison to the truth. "Listen, mate, anything you need, let me know, yeah? Give you a break from William, whatever you need."

Daniel nodded and offered him a weak smile. "Thanks, Bill. If this lasts, I'll probably end up taking you up on it. School and everything." Right now, he wanted nothing more than to stay as close to Vala and William as possible. Maybe he could stir up some memories.
