There had been a time when Jack's Friday night would have included experiencing seven or more simultaneous pleasures in the Lotus galaxy, or maybe drinking hypervodka martinis while chatting up the local girls on Borak 4. Or maybe he'd have been busy at a real bacchanal. Those were always fun. And you couldn't have more fun than getting arrested in ( Read more... )

Alexis was restless. She didn't want to go home, wasn't tired enough yet to go to bed, and so she'd found herself at the Compound. She was thinking about going to see what Billy was up to when she spotted a familiar face in the kitchen.

"Hey, Jack," she said, switching direction and going to lean her elbows on the counter across from him. Alexis didn't know him all that well, but he seemed like one of those guys most people on the island at least knew of, and not just because he was on the Island Council.

"Alexis," Jack replied warmly. He'd been lost in thought but there was no line of thinking that wouldn't come to an abrupt stop when Jack had the choice to talk to a pretty girl. So what if she was Too Young? He was just saying hello.

"Do you want some rice krispies?" he asked, pointing to the box. "They're ten times better than goriffikariem skins."

"Sure," Alexis replied with a nod, then went to go get a bowl only to pause again. "Wait, what? Gorifflawhatsit skins?"

"Goriffikariem...they're these little squirmy things they dry and eat with syrup on this backwater planet I went to a few times," he replied casually. "They were good. This cereal is better."

"Have you talked to Robb about this?" Jack asked with a bite of cereal in his mouth. Milk dribbled down his chin and he wiped it off as he swallowed.

"Or is this going to be a surprise if I say something to him?"

Delirium tilted her head thoughtfully before she grinned madly at Jack.

"Some people like surprises," he agreed. He thought about it for a second, wondering if Robb might be up for someone like Del. She was a handful.

"Have you told him you want to have sex with him?" Jack asked. Sometimes she just blurted those things out so it wasn't outrageous to wonder if Robb already knew.

I stopped in the kitchen after finishing an evening shift at the Children's Office. I was tired and looking forward to going home to Zell, but a cup of tea for the walk home sounded like a good idea. I smiled to see Jack there. "Hi, Jack. Any tea around?"

"In the cupboard. I've got coffee," he replied, pointing vaguely toward a cabinet. "Tea might have been the better choice at this hour, though. Whatcha up to, Polly?"

"Heading home," I said, opening the cabinet. "Ah, good! Mint." I put a bag in a cup and went to put the kettle on. "I did an evening shift at the Children's Office, and I'm heading home now."

"You must be exhausted. All those kids would wear me out. Nate and Matthew are nothing but energy," Jack chuckled. "I'm sure you know. You watch them."

"Interesting choice for a midnight snack," said Dale, eyeing the coffeepot but denying himself a cup at this late hour. He had considerable tolerance, but there were limits if he wanted to get any sleep. "Most would have gone for the leftovers or the cookie jar."

"Cookies don't make interesting conversation," Jack chuckled. His cereal snapped and popped in the bowl. "How are you, Dale? Keeping busy?"

"Always do," said Dale, though once the words were out of his mouth he knew them for the lies they were. "Though it seems to be a task that gets more difficult as the years go by. There isn't much call for my particular skillset around here. And yourself?"

"Busy enough. I'm rarely bored enough to raise hell," he replied. "Between work and Logan my days are full. That's why I wind up doing laundry at night."

Maladicta had needed to go for a night patrol. William was asleep and Shenlong was crouched beneath Olivia's crib, and feeling fiercely that she had to believe her family was safe, Maladicta went for a night patrol.

Nothing was happening.

She went into the compound, walking slowly down the halls and taking it all in. What was different, what was the same. How long she'd been there. She went into the kitchen and paused in the doorway. This was familiar. Jack had been there for as long as she could remember. Why some and not others, she mused internally. Why did everyone from the Disc seem so prone to coming and going while others didn't.

"Good evening," she said, then paused, "possibly morning."

"Hey Maladicta," Jack said fondly. "How've you been? How's the baby? How is...everything?"

It seemed like forever since they'd had a conversation of substance, but that happened with the busy lives they had. And it didn't help that they did such vastly different things.

She shrugged faintly, moving out of the doorway and into the kitchen proper, heading for the coffee machine.

"Olivia walks now, and says words, entire ones, that mean something. It's rather unnerving. I'm fairly certain yesterday she was a tiny lump prone to crying, and now she's... not. I'm quite certain I remember having a life before her, I'm just not entirely sure I remember what that life was like." She poured herself a cup of what was stale, cold coffee and didn't give a damn, sitting at the table and taking a sip of it, black, anyway.

"People going, less faces looking familiar than they used to. It's strange. How are you?"

"I'm the same as ever," he shrugged. "I quit the ITF. That's new. And the council this term. That's new. But after a while around here...not much changes."

Of course there was a change on the horizon but Jack had no intention of talking about it until it happened. He had his superstitions.

"She's really walking and talking?" he asked. "Has William taught her to write yet?"
