Jack hadn't been aware just how much time the ITF took up until he left it and now he found himself with a truckload of free time and not a lot of stuff to fill it in. He'd tried fiddling with his telescope and after a couple nights, had a decent approximation of a star chart going. All the constellations on the island were different from back ( Read more... )

"Because she is a Carter and Carter's are Awesome," Coraline explained simply as she put her homework and the Dummies Guide to Home Improvement on the floor. Coraline was a Carter too and Carters stuck together even if she and Sam were the only ones left. "I'd swap you for this but I don't know how to spell most of those words, let alone know what they mean."

"Too bad there's not a Astronomy for Dummies," Jack said, looking over Coraline's pile before looking back to his own book. "I think the shelf's trying to tell me to get a new hobby, but I'm too stubborn for that. It's pissed me off, now."

"Maybe you could take up painting watercolours," Coraline said managing to keep a straight face for all of ten seconds before smiling at him. "I'm trying to learn how to fix a roof but this is the only book it will give me. Sometimes it's not very nice at all."

"Fixing a roof? That's easy, kid," Jack said, shrugging. "You're not gonna learn that from a book, anyway. You need to get up there and have someone show you how it's done."

"Because she makes it sound so interesting?" Felicity answered from where she was sitting, her own astrology books placed on the other side. She never really heard Carter talk about the subject, but if she enjoyed it so much then surely she could make it interesting.

She certainly agreed that the subject, while interesting, did read a bit dry, which was why she was going over her notes again before class-it wasn't a book she wanted to have to read twice.

Felicity also had a half eaten sandwhich in hand. Wednesdays and Saturdays were always her busiest and those mornings she only had enough time to grab something during the mornings.

Jack gave her an awkward look and closed the book. Great. He makes a comment about Carter being hot and accidentally influences the youth of tomorrow.

"Yeah, she's got...a passion for it, I guess. What are you working on?"

She held up the cover of the text so he could see: Astronomy: a beginner's guide to the universe.

Felicity wasn't so sheltered to know about married couples-so long as she didn't think on details. It also helped that for all she knew, Jack was only talking about her keenness for the subject, not her being physically attractive.

"It's not that difficult really, but some of the passages do require more careful reading before I understand them."

"Maybe that's more my speed," Jack said, motioning toward the book. "Do you mind if I look at that for a minute? I'm trying to figure out the stars here. Completely different from back home."

"Want me to translate?" Sam leaned against the bookshelf, trying not to smile, but a hint of one lingered around the corners of her mouth anyway. "I picked up a few things about quantum mechanics here and there."

"Say it isn't so," Jack drawled, grinning a little at Sam as she walked in. "You know how I like it when you get all dirty talking about uh...quarks. Are there quarks in quantum mechanics?"

Sam just rolled her eyes a little and came to sit down beside him. "There are a lot of things in quantum mechanics," she informed her, "and if you had listened instead of Carter-ing me all the time you might have picked up a thing or two. What are you trying to do, anyway?"

"Make a star chart," Jack said, showing her his half-finished drawings. "The stars are all funny here, completely disorganized, and it's frustrating. Cut my teeth on North America, you know? I could even manage if it was like, Australia, but this? No."

"I'm not sure why the temperature would have anything to do with such a book," Jane admitted, her gaze levelled upon Jack. She had been down to the laundry to find new clothing that did not stretch so against her back, but she had stopped for him as she always did.

Jack flushed a little and put the book away, grinning up at Jane. "Not a thing. How's my favorite Mrs. Lipton?"

Never mind she was the only Mrs. Lipton he knew; even if there was another one, Jack was pretty sure Jane would still be his favorite.

"I believe I am the only you know," Jane teased gently, leaning over to press a kiss to his cheek and embracing him. "But I shall take such a worthy compliment from such a great man."

"Back atcha," Jack said softly, kissing the top of her head. "So. How's things? I haven't seen Carwood since I split with the ITF. Kinda weird, not seeing him every other day. I'll have to come by and have dinner or something with you guys."

Daniel looked at the book, he looked back up at Jack, and he smiled. "Really, Jack, that's little more than advanced astronomy. I would have thought it'd be right up your alley." Not that Daniel really understood anything, or at least most of, what was in that book. Hawking had been well above his head and out of his general milieu.

"Oh yeah, right next to my quarks," Jack said dryly, paging through the book. "I always just have Carter translate these things for me so I don't have to think about it. All I wanted was like...an intermediate guide to the universe?"

"Well, I can give you the answer," Daniel said dramatically.

"Well, that's decidedly less eloquent than usual, Daniel. You feeling okay? Got lack-of-word-itis or something?"

Normally Daniel was the first one to pad his answer with layers of tangentially related filler before actually getting to the point. The lack of ramble was disturbing.

"You have to dangle the carrot a little."
