Jack hadn't been aware just how much time the ITF took up until he left it and now he found himself with a truckload of free time and not a lot of stuff to fill it in. He'd tried fiddling with his telescope and after a couple nights, had a decent approximation of a star chart going. All the constellations on the island were different from back ( Read more... )

"Because she makes it sound so interesting?" Felicity answered from where she was sitting, her own astrology books placed on the other side. She never really heard Carter talk about the subject, but if she enjoyed it so much then surely she could make it interesting.

She certainly agreed that the subject, while interesting, did read a bit dry, which was why she was going over her notes again before class-it wasn't a book she wanted to have to read twice.

Felicity also had a half eaten sandwhich in hand. Wednesdays and Saturdays were always her busiest and those mornings she only had enough time to grab something during the mornings.

Jack gave her an awkward look and closed the book. Great. He makes a comment about Carter being hot and accidentally influences the youth of tomorrow.

"Yeah, she's got...a passion for it, I guess. What are you working on?"

She held up the cover of the text so he could see: Astronomy: a beginner's guide to the universe.

Felicity wasn't so sheltered to know about married couples-so long as she didn't think on details. It also helped that for all she knew, Jack was only talking about her keenness for the subject, not her being physically attractive.

"It's not that difficult really, but some of the passages do require more careful reading before I understand them."

"Maybe that's more my speed," Jack said, motioning toward the book. "Do you mind if I look at that for a minute? I'm trying to figure out the stars here. Completely different from back home."

"Alright, but I need it back by this evening." She held it out, feeling a little strange at handing a school text to someone who actually traveled to other worlds.

"How're the stars different?" She had seen a few star charts, and she knew about the Big Dipper, North Star and a few other constilations, but an over all 'map' of the stars would only confuse her.

"They're arranged all different," Jack said, pointing out one of the constellations in her book. "See this? Doesn't even exist here. Can't navigate a thing without the stars lined up right. Not that we're getting home, but it's the principle."

She leaned over and looked to where he was pointing.

"Why do you think that is? That they're all jumbled up?" Felicity had been told that this was a 'different dimension', but she didn't see how the stars could be all jumbled up like that. The stars were supposed to have an order about them: not be in the same line as the clothing box or bookshelf. Suppose even the night sky was like the island: randomly changing form.

"From what it's like back home? Yeah. When I lived in Colorado, I had a telescope and a star chart," Jack explained. "I knew every single constellation, could tell you exactly where I was. Here on the island? It's like someone took marbles and shook 'em up in a bag and threw them into the sky. It doesn't make any sense."

"I think my grandfather had a few books on the stars as well, but they were writen in latin so I couldn't read them."

Her grandfather was never that stingy with letting people read his books so long as they were careful, but since Lissie couldn't (she still couldn't) read latin it hardly made a difference.

She frowned. "So, how could you tell if they're proper constilations, and not just simply star patterns?

"Well, that's all a constellation is," Jack explained. "It's just a group of stars that looks like something. Say like, you look up at the clouds and see one that looks like a dog? I might see it as a horse or something different. The common constellations have been written down but for this place, well, I am just gonna have to do them myself."

"I know that's what they are." She almost said 'duh', but refrained. "I'm just saying you could you tell if they're like the constilations back home and not a jumble."

That actually gave her an idea.

"Do you suppose we could do that this evening, go out onto the beach at night and make up our own constilations?" She rarely went out on the beach at night, but to lay out under the stars like that seemed like an adventure on its own.

"Oh, sure. I've got a telescope, so we could even see the stars that you can't see with just your eyes," Jack said, smiling at the thought of that. "We'd have to get away from where most of the people are, though, since the light makes it a little harder to see everything."

"The beach would suffice, wouldn't it? There aren't that many people on the beach at night, it's far away enough that lights won't get in the way, and it'll be easy to see them without the trees blocking the distance."

Felicity made a note to stop by the Homestead before her next class to get her flashlight. Her final class would end just as it got dark, and usually the path way was lit, but if she were to go on the beach with Jack during the night, it was best to have the light for insurance.
