Zelda was used to the bookshelf providing...dubious forms of entertainment upon occasion and this evening was no exception. She was researching a few concepts she'd learned in Dr. Zimmerman's class (Dissociative Identity Disorder, specifically, because it fascinated her) and had hoped that the bookshelf could provide her something in the way of ( Read more... )

Rachel's starting to feel like the island's setting her up. Because, seriously?

"You'd be surprised how much can apply to both," Rachel comments as she swings in to deposit some old magazines. "Here, hang on there's one in here for dudes. So that'd work."

"I suppose it is not entirely common for a person to like both genders," Zelda mused, gratefully taking the men's magazine and settling in to read. "I certainly never heard of it in Hyrule, but I am an oddity even there."

"It's not weird," Rachel defends, pretty sure Zelda doesn't feel bad about herself, but still. "Here it's kind of the norm. I bet we can find you some hot, lesbian sex books. There's tips on going down on a girl in there. Very informative."

"Going down? Is that what it's called, then?" Zelda asked, inferring which act Rachel was referring to. "We don't have...names for things, in Hyrule. At least as far as the conversations I had before I came here, anyway. Perhaps they did and just didn't mention them where princesses could hear."

"Improvise," says Paul, with a flicker of a smile as he drops down into a nearby chair. He knows how highly Tom thinks of Zelda and he likes her a lot, too. He grins easily. "There's a lot to be said for you, you know. Experimentation. Figuring things out."

Zelda grinned a little and nodded; in her experience, experimentation had always served her well. Paul was a welcome face as well, as Tom's lover, and she looked up from the magazine to greet him properly.

"And how are you, Paul? I haven't spoken to Tom in a little while. I got caught up in start of term and it slipped my mind."

He gives her a little wave, idly dropping his other arm across his middle, playing with the hem of his t-shirt. He nods, hair slipping from behind his ear.

"I'm good. Tom's good, too. We're...not doing much wedding planning, as it happens."

Zelda frowned a little. "No? Did something happen or are you just not terribly interested in having a large wedding?"

Zelda hoped it was the latter and not the former; Tom seemed quite happy with Paul.

"Wouldn't you already know," Snafu asks, standing next to her and running his fingers over the smooth cover pages. They're a little new to him, not that different from fuckin' contraband until you get to a page about furniture or how to eat, but somehow they're for women.

Considering who else Zelda sleeps with, maybe it's not that strange. "Get him in bed and tell him you're pregnant, that'll blow his mind."

Zelda snorted lightly and turned a page before looking up at Merriell. She hadn't, in a little while, but that didn't mean she wouldn't share a bed with him again. Their relationship was not as easily defined as those outlined in the pages of the magazines.

"Somehow I don't think that would go over well with the other party," Zelda said, tilting her head a little. "I think they mean for you to impress the man."

Snafu shrugs, dragging his fingers down and off the magazine and appreciating the faint sound for it. Going over well is about as far from his concerns as a thing can get, even if he's tilting his head opposite hers and smirking. "Didn't think you needed help with that."

"Not in my experience," Zelda agreed. "At least not with you, anyway. We seem to end up that way without really needing to impress one another. It's a lot more simple than these magazines make it out to be."

She gave him a little smile. "Are you well, Merriell?"

Terry turns from the bookshelf as if the words had been meant for her. She isn't doing anything in particular, just searching for something to occupy her time for an hour or so - and the pile of magazines the girl has seems like the perfect thing for it.

"Those lists never made much sense to me," she says. "Everyone's different, what's to say one thing that's good for one man works for another?"

"Exactly," Zelda said, looking up and smiling a little. She vaguely recognized the woman just from her months here on the island but they'd never spoken before now. It was strange, how a person could live in the same place, cross paths and never really stop to chat.

"I hardly think it would be appropriate to line them up and try out different things, so I am not sure where they got their information. It seems a little...unscientific."

Terry wrinkles her nose slightly at the image, but lets out a laugh. "Unscientific is one word for it, aye. Magazines doing that just seem like glorified advice columns, I think."

"And not terribly good advice," Zelda said, laughing herself. The woman's accent was different than most she had heard on the island, something closer to her own, and that was comforting in a strange way. It also served to make her homesick, and Zelda tried to push that down.

"I'm Zelda, by the way. I imagine since we're discussing sex with men, we ought to at least exchange names."

Despite evidence to the contrary, Tom Hansen was a grown-up. He was completely mature when it came to matters of love and sex, but while he could talk about love until he was blue in the face, having an open, honest conversation about sex just... didn't come naturally.

Not to mention that, finding Zelda reading a sex article in Cosmo was kind of like finding his sister in the same scenario.

"I'm not sure you should be getting advice about anything from Cosmopolitan," Tom said, sinking into a chair nearby.

"No? It seems to be a prolific, if not reliable source," Zelda said, peering over the magazine to smile at Tom. "I don't know how you would research these bedroom tactics, though, unless you slept with a large quantity of people. It would not seem like a sound result otherwise."

Perhaps she had been reading her psychology texts a little too closely, given her current obsession with sample size.

"Do you agree?"

"I always assumed they took surveys, but now I'm kind of wondering what a day at the office there is really like," he admitted with a cough of laughter, "Personally, I think every person is different. You have to... talk to each other. Try things out, I guess."

That's what he and Paul had done, anyway, having no experience at all, and neither of them being the type to go looking for an instruction manual.

"Polling, I suppose, but that seems unreliable too. I think you may have something in regards to just talking to your partner," Zelda said, smiling a little.

"And how is Paul, by the way?"
