It’s a cold day in hell because Danny Williams is taking a surfing lesson. And not only that, but he’s actually asking Kono to help him further than just ‘here’s a board, go surf’ because there’s no way he’s about to take on one of those waves. He’s got sense. He’s a smart man. He has a bad knee and he’s not about to sacrifice the other to a wave ( Read more... )

Gillian dug her toes into the sand with every step, just enjoying the day and the scenery. Given that it all could have been destroyed only a couple days ago, it seemed worthwhile to stop and savor it even more than usual.

Hearing someone yelling about an evacuation sort of ruined the peacefulness of the walk, though. She hurried her steps a little, frowning. Once she spotted the man, she called out, worry tinging her voice. “There's another evacuation?” Wasn't one disaster in a week enough?

"What are you, deaf?" Danny shouts, his volume control slightly lost in the whole wake of losing an entire population's worth of beachcombers. "The tsunami warning, the..." Danny blinks rapidly and realizes as he's speaking that he sounds like a crazy person who's shouting about a thing that isn't even there. Great. Just great. "Look," he says, gesturing with both hands. "My name is Detective Danny Williams, I don't have my badge on me, but I need to know if you've seen a woman named Kono anywhere here. There's a tsunami warning, we need to get off the beach."

She held up both hands, palms out, and approached a little more cautiously. “Detective,” she greeted him, considering the title. As far as she knew, the IPD didn't use it. There seemed to be two possibilities here and given his confusion, she had a good guess as to which was the right answer. “I'm Gillian Foster. I don't know anyone named Kono. I haven't heard anything about a tsunami, either...” After a moment's hesitation, she said, “This may sound odd, but - do you know where we are?”

"Okay," Danny breathes out. His whole body's hit the equivalent of the panic button because he's not used to things like the ocean becoming a force of death, but there's no reason to go to the full McGarrett on the nice lady who's only trying to help. "We're on a godforsaken island with too many pineapples and waves that want to kill us," he says with a scowl.

Geoffrey has no intention of getting in the water, much like always--for Sam he got his feet wet, for Duck he'd probably dive right in, but on his own the best he's going to do is use the ocean breezes to cool off a little. Still, something still always draws him onto the sand.

"Surfing was probably a lot better a couple of days ago," he says to the first guy he runs into on the beach, who looks like he's already come to a similar conclusion from the look on his face. "Or is it too soon to be making that joke?"

Danny just stares up and up at the surfboard, grimacing when he gets the reminder of how he's here with a board that he doesn't want, without anyone he knows, and apparently no tsunami. He's sitting here and waiting for visual evidence, though, because he's sorely lacking a Camaro and an insane Steve McGarrett to drive him to high ground. "I'm missing something," Danny says, a bit wary. "What am I missing in this situation? What's too soon?"

"I'm told it's inappropriate to make jokes this soon after a potential natural disaster," says Geoffrey, "or unnatural, as the case happened to be. But it's probably not a punishable offense."

"Still lost," Danny says with a shake of his head, managing a hopeless sound. "I heard about the whole 'no departure' and I got the spiel about how I'm not getting to see my kid, but what'd they leave out about unnatural disasters? Huh?" Danny is starting to get a sinking feeling about this. "What else is in store?"

The island was full of whack-jobs in Jack's experience and while some of them ended up being okay (Harkness, for example) he never wanted to take anyone on first glance without checking them out first. Maybe it was paranoia from when he'd been in special forces or maybe he was just picky but that was it. Seeing the guy hunkered down next to the surfboard was new (the guy, not the board) and he drew a little closer.

"You have the distinct aura of new. Am I right?"

"I have the--I have an aura of newness, just wonderful," Danny scowls with a heavy sigh as he glances up backwards. "Yes. Yes, I am new. I'm new and I don't belong and of all the times I could've been yanked away to yet another island of doom and death," he spits out with great frustration, "they got me on the surfboard. It's like the universe really hates me. And I mean, really hates me."

"Uh huh," Jack said slowly, assessing both man and surfboard. "Last I checked, the surfboard never killed anyone. Might even be enjoyable in some circles."

"That's just what it wants you to think," Danny says warningly, tapping his nose. "See, I live in Waikiki, I know these kinds of things. It's all harmless and fun until you break your arm and a shark eats your leg off and then you rupture all your brain cells with coral. That's gotta be why they call everyone 'brah'. I got nothing else."
