It’s a cold day in hell because Danny Williams is taking a surfing lesson. And not only that, but he’s actually asking Kono to help him further than just ‘here’s a board, go surf’ because there’s no way he’s about to take on one of those waves. He’s got sense. He’s a smart man. He has a bad knee and he’s not about to sacrifice the other to a wave ( Read more... )

Geoffrey has no intention of getting in the water, much like always--for Sam he got his feet wet, for Duck he'd probably dive right in, but on his own the best he's going to do is use the ocean breezes to cool off a little. Still, something still always draws him onto the sand.

"Surfing was probably a lot better a couple of days ago," he says to the first guy he runs into on the beach, who looks like he's already come to a similar conclusion from the look on his face. "Or is it too soon to be making that joke?"

Danny just stares up and up at the surfboard, grimacing when he gets the reminder of how he's here with a board that he doesn't want, without anyone he knows, and apparently no tsunami. He's sitting here and waiting for visual evidence, though, because he's sorely lacking a Camaro and an insane Steve McGarrett to drive him to high ground. "I'm missing something," Danny says, a bit wary. "What am I missing in this situation? What's too soon?"

"I'm told it's inappropriate to make jokes this soon after a potential natural disaster," says Geoffrey, "or unnatural, as the case happened to be. But it's probably not a punishable offense."

"Still lost," Danny says with a shake of his head, managing a hopeless sound. "I heard about the whole 'no departure' and I got the spiel about how I'm not getting to see my kid, but what'd they leave out about unnatural disasters? Huh?" Danny is starting to get a sinking feeling about this. "What else is in store?"

"Well, the sky fell a few days ago, but it's really unlikely to happen again, even around here," says Geoffrey. He doesn't comment on the kid; he just can't go there, not yet. "So you just got here and you're already checking out the surf? That's bold."

"The sky-the sky, it fell. I'm in a place where the sky falls. I am in a chicken little book," Danny says, mostly to himself because as far as things he disbelieves goes, that is one that's going to take the cake. "And no. No, I am not here to check out the surf. I got here on a surfboard and if I had a way to pitch it back into the great divide that brought me here, I would! I would trade a useless piece of trash for me and get back to the other island that I hate just as much, but at least it has a couple of things going for it!"

"Well, not the whole sky," says Geoffrey, revising his impression of him. "You surfed here? Now that's a new one. We've had people drive, trip, be thrown, drop, wake up, and dance here, but I've never heard of anyone surfing in before."

"I didn't surf here, I was standing on my surfboard," Danny says, gesturing to the board with both hands and then back to his person. "The tsunami warning kicked in, and that's about when I got here. No tsunami, no Kono, no beach-combers, no nothing. And now the sky is gonna fall on me."

"It's not going to fall again," says Geoffrey. "Well, probably. I don't want to make you any promises around here, but it is extremely unlikely that something large is gonna fall out of the sky again any time soon. Tsunamis might be more of a danger."

"So, what you're saying," Danny wants to clarify before he goes on in this conversation because clarity is a beautiful thing, it really is, and he's never been shy on that count before, "is that not only could I die of the sky falling, but I could also at the same time die because of the ocean. I got death on all sides here and I'm supposed to feel safe because-because why?"

"I'm not sure I ever said you should feel safe," says Geoffrey. Sure, the sky's not likely to fall again, but there's always something else. He wonders if anyone's told him about the dinosaurs yet. "But I probably wouldn't say anywhere's safe. At least you're not going to get hit by a car here."

Danny's brow is furrowed and he looks like maybe he just smelled something bad and he's had to eat it, too. "so you're telling me this is not a safe place. I am not in a safe place. Why does that not surprise me? Why is my luck so consistent that I get dealt the shittiest hands," he gripes.

"There are much, much shittier hands to be dealt than this," says Geoffrey, which might not inspire confidence but is nonetheless true. "Believe me, I've played some of them."

"Played? What are you, musician? I mean, because you do have the whole look going on, if the look we're talking about involves sleeping in a truck for the last week. No offense," he adds, after a beat.
