Of all the things I've lost

There were things that just couldn't be helped. Things that were just beyond control. Savannah had been doing a tremendous job of keeping her spirits up since she'd arrived here but she could tell that in the past few weeks things had started to unravel ( Read more... )

"Hey," Joe said when he came into the kitchen, recognizing Savannah mostly by her hair. There weren't a hell of a lot of people on the island with hair like that. Heading over to the coffee maker, he grabbed a mug out of the cupboard and turned to pour himself a cup, pausing in the middle of reaching for the pot when he saw her face.

"Hey," he said again. "What's going on?"

She looked up and was on the verge of tears. Her lips pressed in a thin line even as she tried her very best to smile. It just came off as a grimace.

"Oh, you know," she said quietly, giving a vague wave of her hand. Savannah looked to the ceiling in an attempt to keep the tears from falling.

"I want to go home. I miss home."

There was a couple things Joe couldn't fucking deal with on this island and one of those things was apparently seeing young girls on the verge of tears. A frown drew his mouth down and his brows together and he put his mug down, then placed his hands on her shoulders and steered her toward the table.

"Yeah, I fucking know," he said, because he loved the island and, for him at least, it was home, but he still missed things. He missed Billy more than anything and he missed John. "Sit down, kid, I'll get your coffee."

"Thank you, Joe," she said, wiping her eyes with the edge of her sleeve. She felt foolish and she just felt low. Sweet as the gesture was, coffee wasn't going to fix it.

She had seen her around before - not Lilly, older than her, but enough like her to send a jolt through Veronica every single time. It had been a long, long time since Lilly's death and it didn't hit her as hard or as constantly as it once had, but there was days when she still had trouble believing Lilly could ever die (not helped by the island's having brought her back once), when the shock of losing her was as sharp and raw as it had ever been. It was for her own good, then, that she had stayed far away from this girl, the other one who resembled Lilly and the boy who looked like Cassidy alike.

She couldn't just walk away, though, seeing her upset. Lilly would never have cried in public, but Veronica couldn't turn away. "Come on," she said lightly as she walked over, "the food's not that bad."

The food was that bad, if only because it wasn't the same as home. Savannah's lip trembled as she wiped her eyes and tried very hard to pull herself together.

"Oh, no. It's not that," she replied, managing a small smile that faded fast. "Just a bad day, you know?"

"I've had a few," Veronica said, downplaying it all the same. They generally weren't like this, but that was because she would rather have run from the room than let people see. "There are plenty of those around here. Can I... get you something? Tissue?" She ought to let it go, she thought, but she didn't want to quite yet.

"That's sweet of you, but no. I'll be okay," Savannah said, minding her manners even now. She was half certain it was a lie, that she wouldn't just be okay, although she might as well try.Like her dad said, nothing came from not trying.

"I'm Savannah," she offered."I'm not usually so...well, like this. It's just a real bad day."

With the change of season taking away the waves, Logan hadn't seen much of Savannah lately. Social wasn't a word you'd have found in Logan's old school records, not without the word 'anti' in front of it at least, so without surfing he'd struggled to find a reason to seek her out.

Most people didn't need reasons to hunt down their friends and talk, on some level Logan knew that. He just had a bad habit of preferring to be the one sought out.

Still, finding her in tears left him with a heavy feeling of guilt. He didn't like seeing girls cry. ...He'd always hated seeing Lily cry.

"Hey, you alright?" he asked, hesitating and then reaching out to rub her back.

Savannah leaned into the touch and shook her head and it took a long time for her to trust herself to speak.

"Home sick, I guess," she admitted. "Oh, Logan,I feel like I'm so alone here."

As soon as she said it, it made it real. Savannah twisted and wrapped her arms around him and buried her face against his shoulder.

Logan hesitated a moment, and then slowly embraced her, pulling her close to his chest and stroking her hair. She felt like Lily, and part of him really hated that, if only because he couldn't block out the rush of memories that seemed to come flooding back.

"You're not though," he said finally. "You're not, and it's gonna be fine. It gets better, I swear it gets better, okay?"

She nodded and held on, having a little cry. She finally tapered off and she pulled away to look at him.

"I'm sorry, I'm just down. Really down. I've been trying so hard to be happy, but...but it's getting too hard. Things aren't okay, no matter how much I want them to be."

I didn't drink coffee as much as some people but I had gotten it in my head to get some this morning. Savannah was there, which didn't surprise me that much considering she loved the stuff, but she looked a little more down than usual.

I touched her arm lightly and frowned, trying to figure out what, exactly, was wrong.

"Something happen, Savannah?"

"Yes," she replied simply. She had no sparkle and no life to her, everything was just so cold and bad that she couldn't even manage a smile.

"I found something and it just made me more homesick than ever,"Savannah added. "Oh, Peter, I miss home."

I didn't really know what she needed at the moment but I touched her hand again and slid my own up and cupped her shoulder lightly.

"I'm sorry. Is there anything I can do?"

She threw her arms around his neck and twisted to face him so she could bury her face against his shoulder. She shook her head but that was her only answer as she began to sob again.

Alexis had signed up for Shari's baking class, and she was excited. She was pretty decent, as she'd proved to herself at the bake-off, but she wanted to refine her skills some, learn how to do more complicated things, and the class seemed like a great way to do that. And if nothing else, it would be fun.

But a little practice never hurt anyone, so she went into the kitchen to see about trying something different. When she saw Savannah, though, all thoughts of baked goods went out the window. "Savannah?" Frowning with concern, Alexis hurried over next to where she was standing. "Savannah, what's wrong? Did something happen?"

She sobbed and sniffled and wiped her eyes. It was so hard to keep it together and she couldn't manage to do it for herself, but she tried to do it for Alexis. Tried, but mostly failed.

"I want to go home," she admitted. "I miss my parents and my horse and school and Tim and...and John." Just saying his name made fresh fat tears roll down her cheeks.

Alexis knew what Savannah was feeling, at least a little. She was so lucky, because she had her dad and Detective Beckett, and now she had Cooper, but there was a whole lot she still missed from home, Gran especially.

"Oh my god," she said softly, her heart going out to her friend as she put a comforting arm around her shoulders. "I'm so sorry, Savannah."

"I shouldn't be carrying on like this. I tried to see things here as good, but then I found something that reminded me of home and now I can't st- stop cry- crying," she said weakly.
