Of all the things I've lost

There were things that just couldn't be helped. Things that were just beyond control. Savannah had been doing a tremendous job of keeping her spirits up since she'd arrived here but she could tell that in the past few weeks things had started to unravel ( Read more... )

Alexis had signed up for Shari's baking class, and she was excited. She was pretty decent, as she'd proved to herself at the bake-off, but she wanted to refine her skills some, learn how to do more complicated things, and the class seemed like a great way to do that. And if nothing else, it would be fun.

But a little practice never hurt anyone, so she went into the kitchen to see about trying something different. When she saw Savannah, though, all thoughts of baked goods went out the window. "Savannah?" Frowning with concern, Alexis hurried over next to where she was standing. "Savannah, what's wrong? Did something happen?"

She sobbed and sniffled and wiped her eyes. It was so hard to keep it together and she couldn't manage to do it for herself, but she tried to do it for Alexis. Tried, but mostly failed.

"I want to go home," she admitted. "I miss my parents and my horse and school and Tim and...and John." Just saying his name made fresh fat tears roll down her cheeks.

Alexis knew what Savannah was feeling, at least a little. She was so lucky, because she had her dad and Detective Beckett, and now she had Cooper, but there was a whole lot she still missed from home, Gran especially.

"Oh my god," she said softly, her heart going out to her friend as she put a comforting arm around her shoulders. "I'm so sorry, Savannah."

"I shouldn't be carrying on like this. I tried to see things here as good, but then I found something that reminded me of home and now I can't st- stop cry- crying," she said weakly.

"Hey, it's okay," Alexis said, giving Savannah's shoulders a light squeeze. "It's good to just...let it out, sometimes, right?"

Savannah nodded. She didn't want to mention that the last time she'd 'let it out' it had taken months to get back on track. She'd need something big, all her friends and maybe...oh, who knew what. John certainly wasn't going to come, Time wouldn't be here to pick her up and dust her off.

"I'm sorry," she said, wiping her face and then wiping it again in an attempt to dry her tears. "I just didn't expect...my boyfriend, well, ex boyfriend, he collected coins with his dad and I found one of his coins. Or one like one he has. It just got me thinking and I couldn't keep myself together even another minute."

"Oh, one of those things," Alexis said with a sigh. "People get things from home, sometimes. It's apparently a thing here. Definitely not a fun thing." She hadn't gotten anything herself, but she'd definitely heard about it.

"It's really not a fun thing," she replied. "I was already home sick and it just made everything worse."

"I'm sorry, Savannah," Alexis repeated, feeling a little helpless. "Is there anything I can do?"

Savannah shook her head slowly. She didn't know. She felt as if she'd never be happy again but she didn't want to burden Alexis with that.

"No. No, that's so sweet of you but I just need some time."

"Of course," replied Alexis. She wasn't going to say she knew how Savannah felt, because she didn't, but she did wish she could have helped somehow. "And anytime you need to talk, or, I don't know, gorge on whatever the island equivalent of Ben & Jerry's is and watch chick flicks, I'm here, okay?"

Oh. that was so kind. It struck her just so and Savannah nodded, sniffled, and started to leak. She wasn't even crying. Tears were just running from her eyes.

"Yes. Yeah, yes. We can do that," she agreed as she wiped her cheeks again and again. "Gosh, Alexis, I;m so sorry. I'm so...well, you know."
