It is not said I always know

Joe had told her about a guitar she could use and Savannah had jumped on the opportunity. She'd taken it from the school, fully intending to put it back before the new term started. While school was out, though, she was going to use it. She'd played a bit in her hut and got a feel for the instrument, then decided to go out and play where she might ( Read more... )

A sweet, clear soprano and a lone guitar drew Adam off the path from the Compound to the playground, where he stood off to the side, trying not to disturb the woman seated on the merry-go-round but also trying not to startle her.

It was a beautiful song, peaceful and a little sad, and maybe that meant the singer wanted to left alone. And maybe it didn't?

When she finished she looked around and smiled at the little single person audience.

"Did you like it?" she asked, shifting the guitar so she could sit a little more comfortably. "I used to sing it back home. It's one of the ones I can play the best."

"That was wonderful," said Adam, returning the smile. "I didn't recognize the song, but you have a terrific voice. I hope you sing often." He meant in sincerely; they could always do with more of the good things.

"As often as I can. More when I'm bored," she said with a soft laugh carrying the words. "I'm Savannah," she said as she offered a hand. She never noticed her accent even though she knew it was there. John had used to poke fun at her about sounding twangy, like she was from the mountains.

Boyd's mind has been quite stirred up as of late. The nights are long and restless and much of the day is spent in fervent prayer and readying God's plan buried underneath his floorboards. The song and her voice are like a balm, however temporary and he does not make a sound until she is clearly finished, wishing that she would never stop.

"You have a gift, Ms. Curtis," he says in a low voice, slowly approaching.

"Well, thank you very much Mr. Crowder," she replied, smiling sweetly at him. She made a slight gesture to the seat next to her on the merry-go-round and tilted her head. "You want to sit down? I was just killing time."

"Thank you for the invitation; I believe I could use the rest both mentally and physically," he says, settling next to her. "Where did you learn play?"

"Camp. Church. Girl Scouts. Just around," she replied."I had lessons for a year but I got into gymnastics and so I quit. I can only play a few things. And I pick and make up my own songs."

I had never been musically inclined and while I loved to listen to a new album down at the record store or get the latest Duran Duran on tape, it had never occurred to me to pick up a guitar and sing something myself. My voice wasn't great either, so it was probably better for everyone that I didn't.

But Savannah was great and I clapped a little as I walked up, smiling wide.

"I didn't know you were a musician too. You're just full of surprises."

"I'm not a musician, I can just play a few songs, Peter. I learned most of what I know at camp," she told him. "Do you know how to play?"

I shook my head. "Nope. I can't sing either, not even in the shower. It'd probably make you want to hold your ears in agony if I even tried."

She laughed softly at that and shook her head. "I'm sure you've got other talents. I won't make you sing," Savannah said.

The singing stopped him, especially when he realized that it wasn't coming from any recording - were there even boomboxes somewhere out there? - and was coming, instead, from a person. He leaned against a tree and listened for a few minutes. When she was done, he smiled and clapped his hands, only realizing belatedly that she probably hadn't even known he was there.

Whoops?

"That was great. Do you do parties?" He grinned at her.

"I might," she said with mock innocence and an angelic look on her face. "Are you haveing a party you need music for?"

"Not at the moment, but you're making me reconsider that non-decision." Parties on this island were always a good way to relieve the boredom. He moved out of his leaning position and headed over to her, offering a hand. "And before you wonder who this random stranger is, I'll at least give you a name. Kon."

"It's nice to meet you, Kon. My name's Savannah," she said, the twang of the hill country coming out when she said her name. "I'm kind of new here. Just a few weeks. Have you been here for years, too? Most everyone I've met has been here a long time."

"So, you play guitar, huh?" Logan asked, wandering slowly up to the girl he now knew as Savannah. "Nice song."

"Thanks. Yeah, I play a little," she nodded. She ducked her chin a little and then pushed her hair back from her face. "Joe said I could use the guitar. That was awfully nice of him."

"Joe Dick? Yeah, Joe's a cool guy. ...Actually, he's my dad, so I dunno if I'm supposed to call him cool," Logan laughed. "But he is."

"He's your dad? Oh, that's so nice to have family here," she said happily. "You've got a lot of people here, huh? That must come with being here for a while."
