Meal Post

I had a craving for Indian food and I knew that Harkness was hoarding spices. Far be it from me to begrudge anyone their hoarding-- so long as they didn't mind when my touch got light. Jack and Logan were moving and I only asked if I could use the things after I'd already stolen them ( Read more... )

Renee didn't always take advantage of the communal meals, but the scents coming from the kitchen right now were an irresistible lure. It had been ages since she'd had a good Indian meal. There had been a great restaurant near her place in DC, but it had closed a year ago - a year before she'd come here, that was - and she'd never found somewhere to replace it.

What she smelled and saw when she entered the kitchen was more than promising. She smiled at the array that had been laid out. All kinds of dishes, apparently with more on the way - definitely a treat. “All of this looks and smells amazing,” she said, aiming the comment at the woman preparing the meal. She helped herself to a plate and reached for the nearest dish to serve herself.

"Thank you. Help yourself," I told her with a smile. I got such a sense of satisfaction when people seemed to like the array of foods I'd prepared.

“Happily. I can't remember the last time I had good Indian food,” Renee commented. Looking around for utensils, she added, “It's not something ever learned to make, myself. I'm guessing it takes more cooking skill than I have.” Which wasn't much. Give her a box and she could manage, but from scratch? She was always impressed by people who could pull that off.

"I followed a book," I admitted reluctantly. I could hardly pretend I hadn't when it was sitting right on the counter.

"I'm Vala. I cook dinner on Saturdays," I added, putting down some more rice to go with the spicy dishes. "Are you new or have I just been too busy to notice?"

"You, love," Bill praised with a broad grin as he took in the spread, "are gorgeous. This looks amazing." It had been a long bloody time since he'd had a good curry.

"Of course I am," I laughed. "You should try this one. It's hot. Though it has no meat." Such was the trade off. I'd used all the bird in the yellow curry.

"Oh, I'm trying everything," he said decisively, but hesitated before grabbing a plate. "First, though, can I help with anything?"

"You can put the naan on plates. I made too much, I'm afraid."

Though, in my opinion, there was no such thing as too much naan.

"Thank you, Bill. You're quite kind. Especially since you just did this yesterday."

"Spicy?" Lennox asked, brightening at that. It had been a long time since he'd had anything really spicy. "You, my friend, are officially the best person I've met all day if you're really handing out some spicy food."

It hadn't really been something that was readily available back in Long Bay either, but in Toronto he'd been able to pick a different type of food every single night. Sometimes he missed that. Not often, but sometimes.

That made me smile and laugh a little. Another stirr and then I was pouring the vegetables into a serving dish. It smelled like it would burn the tongue.

"If it's too spicy there's plenty of rice and naan," I told him. "I used some peppers I found dried in the pantry. I have no idea just how hot they were."

"No way, man. No such thing as too spicy," he answered, although that definitely wasn't true and, more than once, he'd found himself downing a huge glass of water after a meal. But that was part of the fun, anyway.

"I'm Jim," he offered. "And, seriously, this meal looks kick ass."

"Jim. I'm Vala," I said. I wiped my hand off and offered it to him, smiling brightly. "Eat all you like. I hate cleaning up leftovers. In fact, if you like it so much, I'll pack it up to send home with you for the next time you get hungry."

That was what I tended to do...not that anyone knew about my food habits.

"If I actually wanted the spicy dish it might be heartening to know that," Daniel said with a smile. He leaned in, wrapped his arms around her waist, and kissed her neck. "You seem to be a bit lost today."

It was a little unusual to see Vala lost in her thoughts. He was usually the one doing that and she was the one sitting on his glasses in order to get his head unstuck from whatever book he was in the middle of reading. He wasn't sure what to think that he was the one getting her unstuck.

"Penny for your thoughts."

"Oh, I...nothing," I lied. "Just thinking about William and how much he's grown. It's been quite a year. Two years and then some..."

"Your son is a wonder," Daniel agreed, privately wondering if that was what she was really thinking or not. Wouldn't she have been looking in his direction if it were?

"He is," I agreed. "When I arrived I never imagined...well, I'd never even thought about it at SGU..."
