Even after Kon had a made a point of inviting her, Cassie still hadn't been sure about going to the party he was throwing. Things had been left so awkward between them after the hurricane and the confessions it had caused and she didn't want to hinder anyone's fun. Plus...it was easier to have feelings for Kon away from him then it was in close quarters.

But Cissie was one of the guests of honor and she really hadn't given Cassie any say in the matter. So there she was, dressed in a tank, shorts and pig tails, attempting to have a good time and staying on the opposite end of the crowd from Kon.

Maybe she'd steal a hanglider. That would get her out of there for a while...

I hadn't really talked to Cassie since before Zell and I got together, and I thought it would be good to say hello, so I did. "Hey there," I said. "How's it going?"

Cassie was distracted keeping track of Kon in the crowd so it took a moment for her to realize that someone was talking to her. "Hmmm...oh. Hey Polly." She gave the other girl a friendly smile. "How are you?"

"Not bad," I said, following her gaze a bit and wondering who she was looking for. "I'm here with Zell, enjoying the party. On the first day I came here, I ended up at an after party for a musical Cole Porter put on. It really helped, so I thought I'd pay it back."

Gabrielle had seen the notice for the party and couldn't resist checking it out. She'd met so many nice people here, she just still felt...alone. And she knew why every time she turned to comment on something to the missing Xena. Still.

So! Gabrielle was determined to fix this and what better place to do that then at a party. She was dressed in her usual clothes with her staff by her side and already she was smiling seeing so many people having fun. And while the music was really strange, her feet was already tapping. She knew she was going to end up dancing at some point but she wanted to get the lay of the land first.

I hadn't seen the young woman around, and she looked around at the gathering as though she couldn't quite believe it. She seemed friendly enough, and I thought I'd give her a friendly smile in return. I raised my glass of mango juice in lieu of a wave. "Hi, there! Enjoying the party?"

Gabrielle glanced over when she realized that the girl was speaking to her and nodded with a friendly smile. "So far yes, though I'm just looking around at the moment. Are you?" She asked politely.

"I enjoy them," I replied. "I didn't used to back home, but they're important here, I think. It helps us get to know each other, so we aren't a bunch of strangers anymore."

"I'm Polly, by the way," I added, offering my hand for a shake.

Cassie stands in the very center of the throng, her smile a bit uncertain but occasionally flickering into something real.

Sirius has asked her here. As a date, even, or at least it might be, and the very possibility had been enough for Cassie to find a pretty frock and skip three meals so that she could be lovely for him. The food tables are extraordinary, but the flutter of Cassie's stomach is great enough that she isn't tempted, not even to sort the fruit that's not be arranged properly at all.

She tucks her hair behind her ear, clicks her mouse heels together, and lets the crowd part and move around her.

Ever since he stumbled into this date with Cassie, Sirius has been wracking his brain trying to remember the last time he went on one. A day later, he's come up with the answer: Never. That he's consented to one, even accidentally, is undoubtedly owing to his affection for Cassie. Dating really is not his M.O.

Cassie seems well-pleased by it all, though, so he's not sorry that his simple inquiry as to whether she was going to the party ended up as him taking her to the party as his date. There really isn't anyone else he'd ever consider making the gesture for.

"Those shoes are perfection," he purrs against her ear as he quietly approaches from behind and settles a hand at the small of her back.

Cassie startles and turns, heat rising to her cheeks as though she's been caught at something, or perhaps it's only his nearness. "Oh wow, aren't they just?" she asks. "It's as though the box brought them up just for me."

She looks him over, smiling wider as she does so. "Your shirt is lovely." Black and unadorned, it might look plain on anyone else, but it's Sirius who wears it and the effect is lovely indeed.

Sirius has to laugh at that, given that he's wearing the same sort of clothes he does practically everyday: Well-worn blue jeans and a black t-shirt. Aware that Cassie sees the world a bit differently than most, though, he doesn't remark on it beyond an affectionate chuckle.

"I didn't think to bring anything to go swimming in," he admits with a brief glance out to the water. When he looks back to Cassie, he's vaguely abashed. "You'd think this being on the beach would've been a clue I might need something like that."

Kon had made sure Lex and Anatoly knew when his party was so Lex made a point of dragging the Russian out with him as a show of support. Admittingly, Lex was still shockingly pleased over Kon introducing him to Bart as his father, so he really didn't mind.

Plus, parties were still his forte and he enjoyed them. If he got to get his grandmaster out of the hut for a while, that was a plus too.

Prior walked over the paused at Lex.

"I have this sense of foreboding," he said. "If you and I are right here, then Freddie and Anatoly are somewhere else. Hopefully not at the same somewhere else."

While Prior had gotten a friendly smile when Lex had first saw him, it turned into a half smirk after he spoke. "Oh no doubt they are. For rivals, those two are drawn to each other like magnets. I just hope there isn't blood this time, I'd like to take Anatoly in one piece without visiting the jail cells again."

Prior sighed. Because as amusing as it was in some ways... it was true, too. "I don't guess there's any reasoning with them," he said.

Marshall wasn't really great at parties.

Sure, the one and only party he'd ever thrown while his parents were away turned out pretty okay -- he still didn't understand Kate's problem with serving his peers from his extensive collection of Christmas-wrapped peppermint schnapps. It was a respectable party, and he'd gotten the attention of the boy he'd liked, and in the end it didn't really matter that the house was a wreck. Mom's bullshit had completely overshadowed his one night of teenage rebellion.

Still, parties really weren't his thing, so if he seemed a little awkward in his pressed trousers, loafers and tie, sipping from a cup of something that had been pressed into his hand by someone with a vaguely familiar face... well, that's because he was.

Hopefully, a few more sips and he just wouldn't care.

"Hey, aren't you just a little...hot?" It wasn't storming anymore and it wasn't like they were in the middle of the Compound. No, they were out on the beach and it wasn't every day that you saw someone in a suit and tie on the beach. Kon himself was just dressed in board shorts and hoping no one commented on his lack of belly button, though he suspected he was going to have to explain more than a few times.

"Come on. Go find a suit and I'm giving out free surfing lessons to the first hundred people who apply."

"Not really. The cotton-blend is surprisingly breathable," Marshall said, smoothing a hand over the front of his shirt with a wry smile. He didn't expect people to understand why he dressed this way. It was just something his family had grown to accept, by the time he'd been old enough to choose his own clothes.

"Yeah, thanks for the offer, but I think for the sake of my own dignity, I'm going to have to decline."

"Hey, come on. It's not that bad. You sacrifice a little dignity in the beginning and then you get the hang on it and you take back the dignity with plenty left over to spare. Surfing is cool." Kon nodded. "Especially on an island like this."

He held out his head belatedly, remembering he hadn't introduced himself. "Oh, and I'm Kon."
