"This is such a bad idea," Reid moans, teetering forward at a snail's pace, arms outstretched to try and maintain his already dubious sense of balance. His childhood being what it was, he'd never done any sort of skating whatsoever until this moment, and has yet to be convinced that it's a good idea. Apparently his husband thinks it's a fabulous pastime to zoom around while listening to Barry White, though, and when he puts his mind to it, Jim can be incredibly convincing.

Nearly overbalancing, Reid reaches out to steady himself against the wall. "This is such a bad idea," he repeats, and puffs some hair from his eyes.

"This is not a bad idea, Spence," says Jim, skating back to Reid with fluid grace; it's been a while since he skated, but he was good at it as a kid and, apparently, he hasn't lost that. He comes to a halt just in front of Reid and offers both his hands.

"C'mon. I promise I won't let you fall."

"Don't condescend to me, Jim," Reid replies with a frown, and casts Jim's outstretched hands a critical look. "I like the wall. It's less inclined to do something showy than you."

"I'm not condescending to you," says Jim, wiggling his fingers and skating a little closer. "I'm telling you that I love you and I will not let you fall." He raises one eyebrow and waits patiently.

As a kid, what seems like another lifetime now, Eugene had been pretty darned good at roller skating. There had been a summer before bike riding had demanded all of their attention that he and Sidney had spent nearly every day in their skates, racing down the streets that were paved well enough for it, scraping up their knees and generally driving their mothers to distraction. Shari takes care of all of them, and Eugene likes her besides, so even though he doesn't know what the hell disco is, he shows for the party she's planned.

The music assaults him the moment he steps through the gymnasium doors, pounding loud and entirely different from what he's used to. Skates slung over his shoulder, he falters in the doorway with sudden sensory overload, and has to stop to catch his breath.

Harry hadn't talked all that much to the two Marines who'd moved into the barracks that had once been intended for his men, but they both seemed like decent enough fellas. The redheaded one was a bit quiet, but there was nothing wrong with that. Harry had absolutely no problem with quiet thoughtful redheads.

He saw him come in and stop, looking startled, and Harry had seen that look before. It wasn't a good sign in a veteran, and his officerly instincts kicked in. He skated over and stopped beside him.

"Sledge," he said, putting a hand forward, ready to catch him if he crumpled. "Are you alright?"

"I'm," Eugene begins, and shakes his head as if to clear it. "Yeah, I just-" Hesitating, he looks to Harry and swallows hard. Even with Harry not living close enough to hear Snaf and himself thrashing through nightmares, it's a little difficult to deny his reaction to someone who probably isn't that much better off. "It's loud. I'm fine, it just took me by surprise, is all."

Harry nodded.

"Yeah, it is a little overwhelming. People from the future seem to like their music loud and their lighting flashy," he nodded. It made the kind of dances he used to go to look sedate in comparison, which was saying something given how raucous the dancehalls could get. He didn't mind having things loud, but he could see very easily how it could get to someone else.

"Here, c'mon and put a pair of skates on. Once you've got going you won't even notice the music."

Joshua doesn't think roller skating is a good idea. Sure it's great for people who know how to do it. And there are some risks that are worth taking, but he's not convinced this particular risk is worth it.

He's taken the moment to slip away for something to drink. The music is crazy and the decorations even worse, but he's trying.

The longer Rory spent on this island, the more he believed that the Doctor had to have dropped them there as a prank. (Ignoring all the dinosaurs and apparently traumatic events that came with the place, which the Doctor probably forgot about, too.) It just sort of smelled like him, down to the Disco-themed skate party.

Which Rory was very much enjoying. He hadn't skated since he was six, maybe seven, so when he did hit the floor (figuratively) he was all flailing limbs and the slow lane until he hit the floor (literally). But his elbow didn't hurt so much with a full stomach and the music was delightfully ridiculous.

Chase had no skates, but mostly because he knew where his weaknesses lay. He was good at bowling, could charm a woman with little more than a hapless grin, and he was a damn good doctor. He wasn't so good with the skating. Still, it didn't stop him from heading over (dodging people) and offering a hand out to Rory. "Just be glad no one has a video camera around here," he said with a bit of a smirk.

"Or good memories," Rory joked in reply, used to looking a bit of a tit. It didn't make him happy, but with a fair number of other people looking just as shaky on their skates he wasn't about to let it drag him down.

He accepted Rob's hand with a thin grin and a murmur of "Cheers," crawling his way back up to his feet with care. "I hope anyway," he added, a skate sliding under foot but his balance quickly recovered. "Don't want to get pegged as Awkward Skating Bloke after less than a month here."

"I don't even think we were hiring for Awkward Skating Bloke," Chase deadpanned, amused enough. "I mean, that would be more than a bit of a feat." He tugged, getting Rory settled on his feet and offering a slight reassuring smile. "At least you're trying?" he said, gesturing to his own flat-feet. "I just don't really feel the need to humiliate myself so keenly."

Gabrielle could barely believe this place. All the new devices and technology that made the Greek gods' magic look drool. She'd been spending her days exploring and trying to learn as much as about everything as she could. The bookshelf had even been kind enough to give her a blank book someone had called a journal so she could write all about it, in the hopes of being able to tell Xena all about this place someday.

When she heard the strange music coming out one of the buildings, she of course had gone to investigate. Still dressed in the clothes she'd arrived in but minus her staff, she looked out of place but Gabrielle could have cared less. She was too busy marveling at everything, especially the odd shoes with wheels some people were wearing. Unable to herself, she began moving a bit to the music, beaming all the while.

On the island, when people turned up in outfits that were a little strange, it was difficult to know whether it was a costume or just how people dressed wherever they happened to be from. This definitely wasn't disco garb, but the chick looked happy enough to be there.

"There are spare skates over there, if you wanted to try them," I told her as I rolled up and pointed to the area beside the bleachers.

"Skates?" Gabrielle asked before looking where the strangely dressed girl had pointed and saw a bunch of the shoes with wheels on them lined up against the wall. "Oh, okay thank you! I hope you don't mind me asking, but what are we celebrating?" A party wasn't hard to figure out, no matter the culture or time, but she was curious about the purpose of this particular one. Was it from one of the worlds the islanders were from or was it something that had developed here?

I faltered, casting for an answer. It was a simple enough question, I guess, it just wasn't expected. "Uh… whatever?" I settled on with a flip of my hand in a vague gesture. "I just thought it would be fun to have a skating party, it doesn't really have any other point."
