The rain having gone a fortnight ago was very much a good thing, as far as Evey was concerned. That much rain reminded her of London's weather, which had always been fairly depressing other than the rain on the night she'd discovered V's deception. That was exhilarating rain, but it was certainly an exception. She'd gone only to the school, ( Read more... )

A day off being forty and plagued by an all-too-familiar face, Raylan Givens was looking for some solitary time, which left him sitting on a rock with his hat tilted down over his eyes and his arms folded across his chest. When he hears her, he lifts his head, nudges the brim of his hat back from his eyes.

"Afternoon, ma'am," he says, with a slight tilt of his head.

She supposed she should have expected someone to be there, especially given how the entire island seemed to be enjoying the sun and lack of dinosaurs. Still, seeing him was slightly startling, and not just because she wasn't generally accustomed to being addressed as if she were in a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical. Her loose, ankle-length sundress and knot of curls certainly wasn't anything like what the women in those tended to prefer.

"Good afternoon," she replied politely. "May I disturb your solitude?"

The dress reminds him of something his Momma might have worn, and maybe that's part of the reason that Raylan smiles so warmly; not all down to charm, anyway.

"Of course," he says, automatically offering to take her burden from her. "I was just about to go lookin' for civilisation, anyhow."

She was wary of anyone unfamiliar that stepped into her personal space bubble, which was still quite large even after four years of relative peace, and so she didn't give up her basket, though she also didn't pull it towards her. She simply continued on as before, though she wasn't insensible to the warmth of the smile.

"I believe it's that way," she said quietly, inclining her head in the general direction of the compound. "Though the statement is debatable."

Niko didn't often wander far from his typical loop of hut, beach, Compound and occasionally Susan's but the weather was nice today and he ventured a little further, back into the thicker cover and closer to the waterfall. Apparently he wasn't alone in this particular thought because, as he approached, he realized someone was having a picnic right there. It was a nice enough place and, Niko mused, for people from places less dangerous than his own home, maybe picnics were the norm.

He waved a little at the woman as he passed. "Don't let me disturb you. Just a quick walk so I can enjoy the weather for once."

The man was quite quite tall, probably at least a full foot taller than her, if not more. It was hard to judge from her position on the ground, but she craned her neck up at him anyway to respond.

"It is quite nice after all that rain," she agreed. "But you're not disturbing me. Feel free to enjoy the clearing if you like."

"It makes it easier to meditate when you're communing with nature," Niko said, nodding at her slightly. "I am quiet, though, so I shouldn't be annoying."

Unlike some relatives of his, Niko knew when companionable silence was best.

"Have you ever seen it rain like that before? Or is that a first time island occurrence?"

She appreciated those who didn't feel the need to fill every silence with yet another barrage of words and smiled at the large man. At his questions, she thought for a few moments, considering the weather over the four years she'd been here, then shook her head.

"I haven't, actually. There have been more short rainstorms, of course, and the snow in December, but not like that. It was quite odd, even by island standards, I think," she replied seriously.

Cable was sitting, cross legged, in the clearing, with his eyes closed, meditating. It was something he was doing with increasing frequency. He needed a clarity that he currently didn't have.

He opened his eyes, however, when he heard someone approaching.

"Hello, Evey."

She really wasn't sure about Mr. Cable. He was too large, too obviously dangerous, and too metal, quite honestly. It wasn't that she wasn't used to odd things, especially here, but the striking capacity of his metal components bothered her and always had.

"Good afternoon," she replied politely, keeping her distance but not being utterly rude about it.

Cable was used to wariness and, in many ways, he quite appreciated it. He remained seated, not moving a muscle, and gave her a pleasant smile.

"I see you've come prepared."

He wasn't moving and she appreciated that. She hadn't intended to interrupt his solitude and considered going to another clearing, but it was large enough for two people, she supposed, especially if she stayed on one edge and he on another.

"It seemed like a good day for a picnic," she noted. "Now that the rain has gone, especially."

Sean might never entirely get the hang of the island's climate, but there are occasional days when he can appreciate that it's a damn nice place to vacation, sadistic magics aside, and when that happens, he does his best to take advantage of them. Wherever he can find a nice shaded spot tends to be his destination of choice to kick back and relax with his pipe, and today that happens to be off by the waterfall. So pleasant is the day, even, that other people having the same idea as him is a welcome distraction as opposed to... well, the other kind.

"Afternoon, lass," he says when he spots Evey heading by, basket in tow.

Evey smelled the distinctive smoke before she saw Sean in the shade of a tree, but when she rounded the corner and he greeted her, she still smiled. It was nice to see her friends, though she hadn't expected to do so for various reasons.

"Good afternoon," she replied, pausing and putting the basket down for a moment. "Enjoying the weather?"

Sean's not sure whether or not he'll ever properly get the hang of small talk, either, but he makes do well enough in that department, too, nodding and leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. "After last month, it'd be a bloody sin not to, e'en if this is the norm."

"It would be," she agreed seriously. "And I don't think anything's really normal here, even if it seems to be. There's always something a bit odd that just happened or is about to happen."

That was perhaps slightly cynical, but it was also very true.

One day, Angel was going to have to learn that wearing all black on a tropical island was horribly impractical, even if he did mostly go out at night. And especially if he's exploring, trying to find a way off the island and back to where he belonged. His back still hurt from his dino-encounter, and Angel thinks that this is what it must be like to feel old. The thought had honestly never occurred to him.

But it's the ugly picnic blanket that catches his attention, and the face of a girl he recognizes, because Angel never forgets a single one. He's sure that he met her at one or more parties, but is thinking of just going on his way because starting up a conversation would just be way too awkward - except this plan is foiled by a twig snapping under his feet.

Evey was, even now, distinctly wary about her surroundings, and hearing a twig break made her head snap up in warning immediately, with her eyes focused on the source of the sound. When she saw it was Angel, she relaxed only a fraction. She'd not conversed with him much other than at the party, and she didn't know him, so therefore she didn't trust him. Why was he sneaking around like that, after all?

She didn't speak just yet, waiting for him to decide to melt away into the trees or remain in view.
