she's not a girl who misses much

It had seemed a straightforward idea at the beginning of the term. Eventually being able to replace her bullets wasn't the only reason she'd taken metallurgy and chemistry, but it had seemed like the ability to do so would eventually result ( Read more... )

The sound of gunshot was an entirely foreign one to Annabeth, or at least it was at the archery ranges. Feeling a stab of panic, she ran towards the sound - contrary to most people's first instinct. But she ran quietly, trying not to make a sound - she may not be able to be invisible at will anymore, but the cap didn't stop her from making noise, and she's still pretty good at sneaking around. Her hand gripped her bow as the person came into view - a young girl. Annabeth recognized her.

She lowered the bow, cautiously returning to making noise as she walked, giving a clear warning of her approach. "Hi."

The problem with guns, Arya reflected, was that they weren't exactly quiet.

She told herself she would have heard the girl coming sooner if it hadn't been for the gunshot in her ears moments before; she hadn't even been going to fire, until she had. It was only one bullet, she supposed. She could spare one bullet.

She craned her head around, smiling crookedly when she saw the bow being lowered. "Hallo," she said. "Were you thinking about going up against a gun with a bow?"

"I was thinking that whoever was firing wouldn't be able to hear me over the noise." she replied, a little defensively, in case Arya was making fun. She didn't like guns - they were useless against monsters and tended to put her on edge. Bows, despite being more primitive, were quieter, at least.

"No, it's not bad thinking, that could work," she said, because she hadn't been making fun, not exactly. "It's just not something I think a lot of people would try."

Then again, it wasn't like everyone would have had the bow to begin with.

The archery butts were kind of in the middle of everything but out of the way. That was kind of the point, Sam guessed. Or the point of him wandering by them now. Sometimes it helped to get off the well-traveled path but still stay close to everything.

He hadn't expected to see anyone there, and when he did spy Arya he paused, watching her with a faint frown. Not wanting to disturb her aim, he waited until she took the shot.

And waited.

...And waited, frowning.

She might have lingered a little longer over the shot she wasn't taking, simply because she had an audience.

Part of that might have been that it felt a little odd not firing, now that someone was standing there anticipating what she was about to do.

"Bang," she said, eventually, and let the gun drop loosely to her side in her left hand. "Hello, Sam."

To his credit, Sam didn't jump. Too accustomed to real firearms making real noise, Sam only reacted with a raised eyebrow that somehow didn't take away from his mildly confused frown.

"Hey," he replied, and took her lowering of the gun as a sign that he could approach. "You know, I hear those are good for more than just pointing."

"I hear," Arya said, turning around to face him, "that they need these things called bullets, and once you're out of those, pointing's about all they're good for."

While Jenny had held a gun once before, so long ago now that she couldn't even remember how far back it was, they still served to make her uneasy. It didn't help that she'd been more on edge lately anyway, ever since she had shown up out in dinosaur territory and been, however briefly, convinced that she was going to die. Walking up to see Arya wielding such a weapon now was, for a moment, startling, but she managed to release most of the tension in her shoulders before she approached, albeit carefully, not wanting to startle her when she was holding a gun that was probably loaded.

"Were you gonna fire?" she asked, careful, bracing herself for it in case she did. "Or just aim?"

"Hi, Jenny," Arya said, still aiming down the range, twisting her mouth to the side as she considered. "I hadn't decided yet. Probably just aim. I don't have that much ammo."

"Right," Jenny said, like that was something she had known all along, nodding her understanding. Of course that would be the case. It just gave her more of a reason to relax. "And hi. Does it really help that way, if you don't shoot?"

"If only," Arya said. "But no, probably not. If it did, just thinking about it would probably be enough to get better, too."

Billy was working on a wander around Kate's hangouts until he found her kind of walk, mainly because boredom didn't sit well on him. It was nice to finally be outside without it raining constantly, but there were less things to do outside than it had seemed when he'd been cooped up in the compound for a month.

He'd expected someone actually doing some archery in the clearing, not Arya pointing a gun down the range as he made his way over. She wasn't Kate, but he liked Arya and any company was good company.

"Hey," he called out, and as soon as he was sure she wasn't going to shoot, started walking over. "Have you been shooting? I haven't heard anything."

"Maybe I'm just that good," Arya said, turning her head to look at him over her shoulder. "I know special gun-shooting techniques that don't make any sound."

"Unless you could shoot bullets with your mind, I think I had you beat there," Billy replied, giving Arya a grin anyway. "I don't know much about guns anyway, so you probably could and I wouldn't even know."

"My secret technique is not pulling the trigger," Arya admitted. "You could shoot bullets with your mind?"

She wasn't even sure how that would work, but it certainly sounded interesting.
