After a month on the island, there are still Good days and Bad days. The Bad days mostly had to do with dinosaurs and stitches and endless fucking rain, and being pretty sure that he was going to die here, which is never a nice feeling for an eighteen year old kid to have. Europe had had its ups and downs but Cooper had always known that Scotty ( Read more... )

From the kitchen, Nate could only hear the song and bob his head along to the catchy rhythm. He'd never heard it before, but by the time he entered the rec room with his sandwich completed and on a plate, he was ready to join in the chorus, singing only half under his breath.

"Scotty doesn't know, Scotty doesn't know. Don't tell Scotty," he sang, lifting his eyebrows in playful sincerity and pointing a finger at that drunk kid from what feels like ages ago who was also singing along. "'Cause Scotty doesn't know!"

Cooper's always maintained that it's a good song, and fucking catchy too, and he's singing along himself when the guy...Nate? Something like that? When he walks in.

"This song's about a friend of mine," says Cooper, grinning. "True fact."

"Seriously?" Nate laughed, his vaguely pleased expression breaking into a full on grin. "I've never heard it before. That's cool."

It took him a second to digest the lyrics again, but when he realized what the guy was effectively saying, Nate laughed again. Not in a cruel way, but somehow almost as if he were laughing with Scotty, or at least with this guy. (Fuck, what was his name?) "Poor Scotty, man."

"I know, right?" says Cooper, sobering for a moment before he's right back to looking as amused as before. "Fiona was kind of a bitch, apparently." At least Scotty had been able to laugh about it himself by the train to Amsterdam.

"I met you, didn't I?" asks Cooper. "That first night - it's pretty fucking hazy."

Okay, Rachel is getting seriously good at stumbling upon people in some form of song and dance.

Then she pays a little more attention to the lyrics.

"That's one magical song, kid," she says, leaning against the doorway.

"It's about a friend of mine," says Cooper, arching his neck to look at her, grinning with genuine fondness. "Hey, Rach. How's it going?"

"Fabulous," she says. It's true. She had awesome morning sex, went for a swim and now she's picking out new lingerie. "Want to help me with a project? It involves underwear."

In many, many ways, Cooper Harris is a predictable soul. He's already pushing out his chair, comic books forgotten. He's barely even limping anymore.

"Absolutely."

Walking into the rec room, Nicki froze just inside the door, her face set in a stony mask and her hands curling into fists at her side. For a long moment, she was silent, until finally clamping her hands over her ears and bursting out with a shrill, "What on Earth am I listening to?"

"It's a song," says Cooper, exaggerated and slow, though there's a spark of mischief in his eyes and genuine fondness too as he looks up at her. "About a friend of mine, actually. Scotty."

"Why would someone write a song about that?" she said, clearly aghast, though a fair bit of it might've been for show.

"It's positively obscene."

"Because it's pretty fuckin' funny?" says Cooper, with a broad grin. "Yeah, it's obscene. Turns out Fiona was kind of a slut."
