It's been over a week since I found myself on the other side of the island. I'm making progress - I couldn't actually move much for a while, even with crutches, once we all made it back to civilization. I'm pretty sure that's the most walking (running) I've ever done in my entire life, if how sore I was said anything about it. It's a start. The ( Read more... )

Eli was starting to love this place. He'd gotten changes of clothes and was now wearing a shirt that fit and didn't say "You are here." (He'd always liked that shirt, but man, it got old.) He'd been eating real, recognizable food -- with meat and everything! Plus, there were new people to talk to, fresh air to breathe, a beach to explore...

Oh, and video games to play.

And, he saw as he entered the room, pretty girls who played video games. In fact, that girl looked a lot like... He grinned. It was official: this place was awesome.

"Hey!" He presented himself to her hopefully. "You want a second player?"

I don't actually know what I'm doing in this game. What I can see is that pretty much everything is breakable, and okay, I admit it, it's kind of funny whipping all the random junk on the ground and watching them explode into Lego pieces. I don't consider what it'd look like to other people that I'm playing a game like this until I realize someone actually did take notice. I guess it's lucky he doesn't seem to care.

"Oh! Sure, the extra controller is over in the pile there," I say, shifting so my foot is on the ground instead of on the couch so he can sit. "I don't actually know what I'm doing, though."

Except try to follow the movie. Kind of. It looks like it's starting from the first one, which I've actually seen.

"Awesome." He happily grabbed the other controller and settled down beside her. "Whatever you're doing, it looks like fun. I've never played this before -- I'm more of a computer guy than a console guy." Partly because they hadn't had the money for the latter, but whatever.

"I've been stuck without any kind of games for the last few months, though, so I'll take what I can get. Besides, who doesn't love Indiana Jones?"

He flashed her a friendly grin. "I'm Eli, by the way. Eli Wallace."

"There's always games down here if you want to play. Harder ones than this," I explain. I guess I could have played any of those, but honestly, I don't think I can deal with anything too engrossing yet. I can't help but "I am, too. But there's no working computers here! None with internet, anyway, and it's driving me a little crazy."

I still miss my game - my guild, too. As strange as they all were, they were probably my longest standing friends I could count on back home.

"Oh, and I'm Cyd," I add, almost as an afterthought, flashing him a smile. Tuning back to the screen, I find myself stepping on a switch on the ground. There was an identical one next to it. "Um, I think the point is we have to work together to get through some of these puzzles."

Sliding into the seat next to Cyd, Zoe didn't even think twice as she picked up the second controller. It wasn't it was comfortably rested in the palms of her hands and she was comfortably slouched in the perfect gaming position did she really look at the screen.

"And what is this that we're playing? Cause it looks like it was made for kids. Awesome kids, but kids nonetheless." Not that she was about to stop playing. She just liked being informed about her gaming. It was called being responsible.

The little person (his guide, I think, from the movies?) following me comes to life the minute Zoe joins in. At that point, I had at least figured out enough to get to the entrance of that temple place.

"Indiana Jones, Lego style," I say with a slightly embarrassed laugh. Okay, it's geeky, but I don't have a strong stomach for all the shooters available to begin with, nevermind when I'm not feeling well. "I just thought I'd give it a try."

"You had me at Indiana Jones." Her love of the fedora wearing, bullwhip cracking anachronistic archaeologist was what led her to study what she did in college in the first place. Combine him with video games and it was pretty much an afternoon made for awesome.

Letting the guy pick up a little speed, she shrugged. "No harm in trying. I mean, we can always save excessively if it turns out to be way too hard or something."

"I don't think that's going to be a problem," I laugh. I mean, I like to think I'm a good enough gamer to handle this. Nodding at the video game case before tuning my attention to jumping over a pit, I point out, "It's for people ten and up."

"What the hell happened to you?"

To clarify: he doesn't know her well, but he does know her, and Jim is one of those people who it doesn't make much of a difference to - he recognises her, and that makes him interested. He leans his arms on the back of the sofa and looks down at her. His attention is momentarily taken by what she's doing, but, mostly, it's fixed on her.

It's a question I'm getting used to. I'm not as banged up as I was a week ago - the scratches and cuts were healing and the bruises were mostly faded - but they're all still noticeable. The question makes me glance away from my game and toward Jim, who I know I remember from the party.

"Oh, um," I say, not exactly relishing the fact just the question reminds me of what happened. "I ended up on the other side of the island. We had to walk back and, well, I guess I'm not very good at hiking."

Or running from dinosaurs in the rain, for that matter.

"I went out with some of the search parties."

Jim flops down on the couch beside her without waiting to ask if it's okay. He turns his head and looks at her, studying the bruises on her face for a long moment. He's hit once again with the painful relief that it wasn't Reid who was out there.

"Better stick with video games," he tilts his head. "You know, I haven't played one of these since I was a kid."

I relax a little once he's talking about the game I'm playing. I've talked about what happened so much lately that I'm ready to just have things go back to normal.

"I think so too," I agree with a laugh. I'm not meant to be an adventurer, I don't think. It's a surprise I can managed it at all. "Do you want to play? Another person can join in."

Henry was glad to see Cyd looking a little better. He knew she wasn't leaving the compound, but that was okay, for now. She needed time to recover.

He glanced at the screen, and did a double take, squinting. "Is that...a Lego version of Raiders of the Lost Ark?" he asked, amused at what looked like a Lego Indiana Jones and Marion running around her bar from the movie, breaking things and collecting what looked like tiny round Lego pieces.

[LOL I love this game XD]

I think I'm handling things pretty well, if I do say so myself. I mean, old me would have completely broken down there, and I'm...mostly okay. Mostly. Still a little freaked out, but I wasn't the only one that felt that way during it. And as much as I really have appreciated the therapy I've been getting since then, I'm glad he doesn't mention it when I realize he's been watching what she was doing.

"I think so," I explain. It's been a long time since I watched, but it's enough that it's jogging my memory. "Um, it's two player, if you want to play."

I don't think he plays video games, but this is one of those things that I'm pretty sure anyone can pick up.

"Sure, I'll give it a shot," Henry said, adding with a chuckle, "though I think the last video game I played might have been Pong." That was an exaggeration, but not a very big one.

He spotted the other controller, which didn't look anything like what he was used to, and picked it up, along with the other thing that looked like what Cyd had attached to her own controller. "So this thing plugs in here?" he said, moving the rubbery cover aside to click it in as he sat. The screen said he needed to press + to join, which he did, and suddenly he was Marion Ravenwood. "Okay, now what do I do?" he asked, looking down at all the buttons.

"I've played the online version of that," I offer, watching him set things up. I still have no idea what I'm doing, honestly, so teaching him how to play is going to be an interesting experience.

"I usually press buttons until it does what I want," I admit with a laugh. It's not the neatest way to play things, but it seems to be working, at least. "Or move the controller. This is the first time I've played this."

"There is my favorite dino-compatriot!" Castle greeted with warm aplomb, heading straight for her. He had been worried over the last little while and now that they were all safe and sound and he had Alexis, he was feeling in the best of moods. "How's your leg?"

I haven't seen any of the people I ended up with in the last week. I'm just glad we all made it out okay. I'm pretty sure I would have never made it back without them.

"I can walk without crutches now," I explain. It still hurts, but I'm finally thinking maybe I'm going to be okay. "Which, you know, yay. How are you?"

"Me? Giddy," Castle announced and had no issues whatsoever that a grown man was giddy. "I know we didn't exactly exchange life stories when we were running for our lives, but I have a daughter. I may have screamed something about that. The important part is that she's here!"

"I think I remember that," I smile, even though at the time I'm pretty sure all the yelling freaked me out more. It was easier now that it was over, either way. "I'm guessing she wasn't here before?"
