She should have been relieved. Happy. Ecstatic, even. But what she felt was panic. The clinic staff had lost two of its' best doctors, Grey was now in charge, and it was only a matter of time before it became quite clear what a complete hack Sadie Harris had turned out to be. Her father was right: she wasn't cut out for this, and she never would be ( Read more... )

Ray looked over from where he was trying to find a coloring book for Edward. After a quick glance around he surmised the lady was talking to him, and replied, "Play what?"

"It's called MASH. Or, uh, THC, if you want to get technical," explained Sadie, pronouncing the latter something like thuck. Not nearly as eloquent as MASH (if you could ever call it such) but it would do.

"Here," Sadie gestured at that page with her pen, "you're supposed to give me three names, three numbers, and three - well, methods of transportation, I guess, since we don't have any cars. Or roads, for that matter."

Blinking from her position on the couch, curled up with a book- Little Women, because childhood classics seemed to be the only texts that the bookshelf wanted to offer Claire that day, something she didn't want to think too deeply about- Claire shifted to the edge, lips curling into a wide grin. She hadn't quite gotten to the point where high school games were looked back with fondness- after all, she hadn't graduated yet. Nevertheless, the game was one that was familiar, which didn't require a lot of deep thought, and so she slipped to the carpet and sprawled on the ground, not minding the dirt that was probably there. What was the worst that could happen, after all? She'd scrape her knee, only to have it heal before she ever got back to her feet ( ... )

"Oh, that's good. I think I'll go with 'chet,' that one sounds the best. Or the least hideous, thereby making it best by default." Never too worried with being perceived as mature herself (even, at times, within the confines of hospital walls) Sadie extended her own hand freely and shook, grinning at the other blonde.

"I'm Sadie," she said, grinning in return. "So, shall I choose your three names for you or would you like to do it? I've come to realize you actually can't assume everyone around here knows who Brad Pitt is."

"It's very nice to meet you, Sadie," Claire replied with a tilt of her head, coy and Southern like the way Sandra taught her over the years. She was glad for the fact that Sadie seemed not to mind the age gap- and really, if Sadie was adjusting MASH for island life, how much could she rightly complain about? The mention of Brad Pitt knotted in her stomach, not because she had any particular affection for the actor, but instead because it was so frightfully normal that she could only beam by way of expressing her gratitude over such ease being possible on the island at all.

It really was a whole new life.

"And I totally know who Brad Pitt is, although I have to admit that I haven't really found him attractive since the whole switching over to Angelina thing," Claire rolled her eyes, lips still caught in an easy smile. "But I'm open to other suggestions? Just no one older than Johnny Depp, because he's already pushing it. I think he's older than my dad." She pulled a face at the very thought.

"I know what you mean; I was only ever into him around the Fight Club era anyway," admitted Sadie, giving a small eye-roll of her own. It was strange to think of anything as 'normal' as the Brangelina fiasco, having adjusted almost fully now to the way of life around here. Even stranger, perhaps, was the fact that something so odd as a celebrity media disaster could seem in anyway normal. Such where things on came to accept on Tabula Rasa, with time. Maybe.

"How about Milo Ventimiglia?" she suggested, calling back on years of lying in bed catching Gilmore Girls reruns on cable.

Having just finished baking a batch of cookies, Sookie had loaded up a large plate with their warm, chocolate chip-filled goodness, every intention of putting the sweets down for everyone in the rec room to enjoy. She wasn't keen on eating them, herself, but liked the fact that baking kept her hands busy throughout the downpour of rain, and also derived a small pleasure from seeing people enjoy the fruits of her labor. When a young woman called out for her to play, however, Sookie stopped in her tracks and tilted her head to look down at the paper, a grin immediately overtaking her.

"Oh, gosh, now you're just gonna make me feel old," she joked, setting the plate on the table and kneeling down beside the blonde. Pausing to consider the sheet of paper, Sookie raised a brow. "I'm afraid this might end up jinxin' me, though. I just- I sort of started datin' someone recently, and I'm hangin' quite a few hopes on him right now. Do people play MASH when they're already taken? Feels like that'd just be reverse Russian roulette."

"Oh, please, you're no older than I am, and I am not old," Sadie objected with a small laugh. Though it sounded like denial, the truth was that Sadie had never felt all that adult, always hanging on to the past while warding off the future to the best of her ability. That shouldn't have mattered so much, now that she was virtually stuck in time on the island, but those insecurities and fears still held more power over her than Sadie would have liked.

"We can make him one of the options," she suggested, tilting her head towards the page. "That way he's got as fair a chance as any."

It was just a piece of paper. Frankly, it shouldn't have mattered at all, results from a silly high school game that depended all on chance. But Sookie couldn't help feeling her chest tighten at the very thought of pitting Bill and Mitchell against one another, of being okay with setting their names together like she could really make a decision based on the roll of a die or some other equivalent. What would she do if Bill ever arrived on the island? How would she feel compelled to act? Sookie could only stare for a time, before she resolved not to let it bother her, stomach steeling as she nodded with the flicker of a smile, short-lived.

"I guess so- we choose three people, right?" she nodded in assent, already squirming and feeling guilt creep over her skin. Closing her eyes for a moment, Sookie then blinked them open. "You don't wanna play? First, I mean."

"I guess I could, if you'd prefer," Sadie shrugged, with a small, passive smile. She held out the pen and paper to the other blonde, in case she took up the offer, which seemed likely. Maybe it was just Sadie, but she'd never seen these things as more than ways to pass the time, never truly accepted there was any possibility she might end up living in a shack, driving a Rolls Royce, and raising eighteen children with James Dean. This woman didn't seem so convinced.
