The house before him looms still unfinished and McCoy really doesn't know whether Scotty's disappearance is some vague way of telling him to quit the project. Still, he might run away from ruins of an old life, but he's a damn stubborn ass about giving up. So rather than just let the foundation be, he's started to get back to it ( Read more... )

"Need a hand, Bones?"

Jim's been doing a lot of home improvements of his own lately, bookshelves for Reid, adding on to the hut to make it a more reasonable space for two people to share for...well, forever. He's always been pretty good with his hands but practise is making perfect. He drops down into a crouch and scratches between Plum's ears when he comes nosing around, and he doesn't ask anything else, just leaves that original question hanging there, but he's watching his best friend with a measure of concern on his face.

"Know anything about wiring?" Planks, boards, floors, and walls are pretty simple as far as McCoy's concerned. He built a shed for Joce once, so he knows what goes into that. Wiring behind the walls gets complicated and as he foists out the switch and wires to Jim, he doesn't even feel bad about asking for help. "Or turning the goddamn heat off for just a couple seconds?" he mutters, half to himself.

"Can't help you with the heat, Bones," says Jim, accepting the wires and studying them, turning them over in his hands. He's not bad with appliances, but wiring a whole house in a way that will ensure that it's not a fire hazard? That might be beyond him. He misses Scotty with a pang. He doesn't say anything.

"Have you asked Chekov about this? That kid probably wires in his sleep. Or, hey! I bet Spence at least theoretically knows how."

"Conversations with Chekov these days inevitably get back to sex," McCoy offers and sounds old for it. "He and that pretty girlfriend of his haven't done it yet and I'm trying to avoid him getting her pregnant. But you can send yours over if he can help. Been doing this all alone since Scotty vanished." He abandons the thought of making any progress on the wiring and pushes to his feet, crouching over to give Plum a light scratch before heading over to the makeshift workshop table.

She didn't have much that needed doing just then, her classes moving along steadily but without tedium, life settling into a constant pace like a river running through the land. Her run had been nice, but though the excess energy was gone from her limbs, her mind still buzzed and she had decided to continue walking, maybe to clear it or maybe to let her thoughts grow.

Either way, she welcomed the distraction of the doctor and smiled as she approached. "Fixing houses as well bodies. Makes sense to me."

If it'd been that simple, maybe he would have liked working on the house some more. As it is, he reaches back over the log for his shirt and slides back into it, buttoning it up as he sets down the wiring he's working on. "Just trying to steal back a couple comforts from home. And with Scotty gone, it's all on me, now."

She smirked as she watched him cover up, but didn't comment. "Isn't there a building crew as well?" she queried with a lifted brow. "You could always ask them for a little help."

"I've asked, but it's my home," he says with all the pride that comes of something like this. "When this is finished, I want the mistakes to be mine and the bruises and scars to show for a home." Hell, he might never even finish, but if he does, he wants it to be his own accomplishment. He finishes with the last button, staring at the switch before abandoning it with a heavy sigh. "Hell, maybe I'll just live with candles."

Her hair hung in two long red braids on either side of her head. It is a mildly childish look, but given the humidity and the sweat she manages to work up moving around the island it is for the best. Jean's been jogging, taking comfort in the mindless activity when she comes upon Leonard and his house.

Slowing to a halt, she wipes her forehead with the back of her wrist squinting as she looks around. "Building something interesting?"

McCoy gets out a heavy sigh of frustration and turns to look at her, aware that his gaze lingers probably a moment too long, but hell, he's not perfect. He lifts up the wiring and offers it out with one hand while his other grasps at his shirt. "Know much about how to wire light fixtures?"

Jean offers up a small smile, the only indication that she's aware of anything less than decent going on. There might be many words used to describe her, but impolite is not one of them.

"I might?" There are a lot of things she knows, some more than others. "Not a lot, but a little something."

He gestures over to his side with his chin, patting the seat beside him. "C'mon, you might as well take a breather for a second. If you don't, Plum might just get real offended and then I'll be dealing with him yowling all night."

Evey was beginning to think she'd bit off more than she could chew with this term's classes. Intermediate Algebra was especially difficult, though Chemistry was no easy task either, and her mind was swirling with the last lessons' figures and symbols and equations. To stave off the monstrous headache she could feel forming, she went for a walk without focusing on where she went or what she saw., which was quite unlike her usual hyperfocused attention to her surroundings. Rollo stayed with her for some portion of it but had eventually decided she was boring and gone off to chase something else.

When she walked into Dr. McCoy's clearing, she stopped and blinked owlishly at the doctor in front of her. How had she got here? And where, exactly, was here?

McCoy glances up when he hears footsteps, not sure that someone's even there until he looks. They're very quiet footsteps, after all. "You look like you got lost," he greets her, knowing that he's not exactly in the middle of nowhere, but he's also not close to all the major buildings people usually go to on the island.

"I think I might have done," she agreed slowly, looking around. It wasn't at all like her to be so unobservant of her surroundings and it worried her that she'd done so. There might have been any number of threats she'd missed, but then again, the island's threats weren't generally the kind she was really used to.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to barge into your clearing."

McCoy dismisses that with a wave of his hand. "I didn't exactly go see a land council about borders. I'm pretty sure we're all just squatting when it comes to where we live," he says, still fixated on the damn switch, grasping a borrowed screwdriver to try and get it tighter. "Besides, this one's not my clearing yet. Not until I finish that," he says, gesturing to the foundations of the house.

Lipton might not have interupted. With the way the island's population was constanting shifting, the island itself tended to change along with it, a process he found a bit fascinating. In his walk over to check up on the Boarding House after lunch, he sometimes took a longer, winding route just to take a look around. He didn't want to intrude, and he wasn't trying to be nosy, he was just plainly curious. When he saw the man - a doctor, he thought, he'd seen him around but didn't think they'd ever met - working on his house, he was just going to continue on his way until a soft mewling noise made him pause and look for the animal that made it. The little ball of fur with blinking, curious eyes made him chuckle. Like mind, that one.

By then good manners dictated that he acknowledge the man, being on his property and all. He gave a friendly wave and smile, nodding. "Hey, good afternoon."

McCoy had glanced up when Plum announces that they've got company, but he doesn't recognize the face. "Afternoon," McCoy greets, a bit curt, but that's mostly just him in general. "Plum getting in your way?" he asks, ready to collar the cat and shove him at Spock if he's been stirring up trouble while McCoy's been distracted.

"Nah, seems like a nice little guy." Lipton said, bending down and offering out his hand palm up as an peace offering. Either the little thing would sniff it out, get angry or hide. He'd prefer the first, but you could never tell with young animals. Or at least he couldn't. "Only have a couple of rabbits myself, and they aren't the friendliest creatures ever." Which was too bad, really, as he would have liked to give them as a gift to Lydia as part of his goal to be the most indulgent step-father in the world.

"How's the work coming?" He asked, nodding towards the house.

"Rabbits are quiet and stick to themselves, though," McCoy pointed out, not saying that he would've traded in Plum because he was attached to the damn thing now, but it wasn't like they were best friends. "It's ah...hell, it's going. I'm going for one story and a loft, which means I need supporting walls and I haven't done anything like this in over a decade."
