In general, trying to hide behind a record wasn't the best idea in the world. Trying to hide behind a record with your picture splashed all over the back was an even worse idea, especially when it said in large and gigantic glittery letters MAKE IT SPARKLE. Of all the things that she could be holding, this was a bad idea. She was going to put it ( Read more... )

"I'm way ahead of you there," Hawkeye called, raising his martini glass. His routine on the island had fallen into a similar pattern to that back at the 4077th - a little medical work, a little recreation by way of reading or doing repairs or paddling in the sea, and a lot of drinking. Alcoholic? Him? He preferred the term 'lush', it sounded more stylish.

He came to a stop and looked quizzically at the girl hiding behind a record.

"Are we playing hide and seek? I hate to say it, but I think I've already found you."

Robin winced heavily as she let the album fall down to about her shoulders, clutching the record tight to her chest and trying to hide the picture just in case there was still a hope in hell at preserving her dignity. "We're not," she said, hoping that the jukebox was done playing her songs, but she could never tell. "Unless you want to be? I'm a very good seeker."

"It'd pass the time," Hawkeye said, mulling it over, and then flashed a bright grin at the girl. "And I could certainly enjoy being sought by you."

In the background, the jukebox switched tune, to something that sadly Hawkeye recognised. The song wasn't from his time, and he'd compare the sound to a robot dying inside a washing machine, but the lyrics were clear - some girl repeating 'womaniser, womaniser, ooh you're a womaniser'. It'd played it to him a few times now, in amidst the protest songs and the ones about going crazy. You didn't need to be a literary expert to get the gist.

"What's that in your hands?" he asked, glancing at the record. "If we could find something to play it on, maybe we could drown out that hunk of junk."

Robin stared at the record, then at the man, then panicked and tried to think of something quick and witty, but she really wasn't having much luck and was standing there not-speaking for a lot longer than she wanted to be. "This? Noooo," she drew out the word. "No. It's bad Canadian music, no one wants to hear that."

"Now there's an idea," Meredith said dryly, then looked more closely at the record being held up as a shield. Why Robin - and she might not recognize breasts or legs, but she knew that voice - would be hiding behind it, she didn't have the first clue. "Robin? What are you doing?"

Robin cleared her throat and tried to pass herself off as calm and cool and collected. She dropped the record and offered her best grin. "Meredith!" she greeted, too-brightly. "Wow, funny seeing you here on the island! Did you just pop in? We should go get drunk. Right now. Away from things."

"You dr-" Meredith gestured from Robin to the record and back again, bewildered. The way she dropped it, there was no way something about it wasn't seriously bothering her. "I - how is it - I have been here forever. Not that I'm saying no to the drinking, but - Robin, are you okay?"

Robin pressed her lips together and headed for Meredith. "Totally!" she said as a scoffed giggle came out, belying that no, she wasn't, but this wasn't just about falling asleep while eating ribs. This was totally a much more serious thing. "C'mon, this is lame. Let's get out of here."

"If you were a friend of mine," Walt tells the voice behind the record, "I'd suggest you stop drinking to avoid hiding behind more weird stuff, you know."

He's leaning against the music shelf, trying to find something to listen to. For now, he's had enough of Roger Miller (doesn't mean he's stopped admiring the man), but Walt's not quite sure what he wants to listen to.

"I suppose ya won't recommend me that record you're holding, right?"

"Unless you like insipid lyrics and terrible pop music?" Robin offered because some people had true baggage and damage and if liking nineties-music was one of those things, she couldn't exactly heal them at all. "I mean, if you do, go wild. If not, save your ears and let's burn it."

"Fuck no," Walt says, shaking his head. He's listened to some bad shit (he couldn't even always tolerate his team-mates singing in the HumVee), but if he's warned about it and can avoid it? All the better.

Then he shrugs. "Sure, if you wanna burn it, we could do that."

She turned the record so that the cover with the sparkling robot was the one that was showing and handed it out to him. "I have matches back at my place, but it's kind of a hike. Let's grab some from the kitchen and torch this bitch," she said with only slightly veiled scary rage.

Upon entering the rec room Harry noticed someone hiding behind a record, which didn't look like the sort of music he would be interested in at all. He probably would have just gone straight to the bookshelf and not worried about why she was hiding, except that he heard her speak.

"It's a bit early for that, isn't it?" he asked, cheerfully ignoring that there were times when he'd have drunk at any time of the day.

"Not if it gets people to go away," Robin said just as brightly, trying to make everyone get out so she could make a break for it and go stomp and jump all over the record and break it into a zillion little shameful pieces. "I mean, come on. It's five-o-clock somewhere, right?"

"I suppose so." It didn't mean he was going to go off and get drunk, though. "Why do you want people to go away?"

"Mostly so I can just kind of sneak away," she admitted, because between the record and the jukebox piping in with her greatest hits every time she even made a move for the door, she didn't exactly need anymore attention called to herself. So of course everyone kept coming in to just hang out.

Shit. Why the hell did she have to be social? Why couldn't she jump into that good old life of hermitism? She peeked over the edge of the record, hiding the record behind her back as if that would suddenly make it change. "Hey! Champagne-waiter," she greeted, trying to mentally search for the name in her head. "Isaac? Ivan?"

"You can go back in time and convince all young girls that modeling and singing is an insane mistake?" she offered, because beyond that, she was definitely not so sure how things could be better. "And Ishiah. Sorry. I was a little tipsy. I remember you, but not the exact name."
