The thing with babies was, they grew - and they grew fastDevon and Ellie were doctors, they knew the rate Madeline would be growing at, when her check-ups were needed, when her milestones - both medical and personal - were coming up. Together, they were an intelligent pair of parents who would do anything for the kid they loved with everything they ( Read more... )

Chase hadn't meant to be prying, but when he arrived into the basement and saw the man and the pile of clothes, it clicked almost instantly as to the purpose. "I know that stage," he said knowingly with a seemingly sage and calm nod, even if he'd been the panicked one a year ago doing the same thing. "Let me guess. She's straining the seams of everything you currently have?"

"Just about," Devon said with a nod, sounding about as proud of the fact as he was having trouble finding new clothes. "She's growing like a beanstalk."

"Just wait until the teething and the screaming. Then you wish for such simple problems as clothes being too small," he said, as if in his own mental distant world yet as his mind ruminated over Nate and how that went. "We're in the terrible twos. Except he's so emotional that half the time I'm worried that instead of pitching a screaming fit, he's going to get all fluttery about something I've done."

Devon nodded, giving what Chase said some thought. "You know, there's a part of me that's kinda looking forward to all of it. Even the teething and the screaming and the terrible twos."

He gave Chase a grin. "I'll probably regret saying it in two years, but there you go."

Every so often Grigg had been known to claim that he was good with kids. He was, truly, but with the caveat that he was good with kids that were not his. Once they got to the age where they could walk, talk and roughhouse being an uncle had become infinitely easier. A lot of that had to do with his sister's decreased levels of worry and increased willingness to temporarily part ways with them.

Not wanting to interfere with the guy's clothesbox quest, he hung back a little bit. "I can't say that I'd be much help, but I want say that if you need a second pair of searching hands I could always try," he offered ater a minute's thought. It couldn't hurt.

"I could use an extra hand," Devon replied. He was never one for turning down help if he needed it, especially when someone offered. "I'm just looking for anything between three to twelve months, that isn't bedazzled, velour, or tie dye."

You wouldn't think they made baby clothes in velour, but it happened.

Stepping up to the box, Grigg thought that over. It didn't seem like that hard of a challenge, but he knew that the box was fickle when a person was looking for specifics.

Reaching a hand in he pulled out a very tiny tutu. That just didn't see right at all. "And I take it nothing made for tiny dancers?"

"Probably not," Devon said, giving the tutu an amused look. "Madeline's a little too tiny to be dancing just yet."

Nick was taking his usual Stroll to the Clothes Box and Hope Hideous Things Don't Come Out trip.

He was, as usual, losing the battle, as horrible shirt after horrible shirt kept finding their way into his hands.

"Man, at this point, I'd take anything that doesn't have puffy-paint unicorns on it," he muttered under his breath. This was getting ridiculous.

"Hey, don't knock the unicorns," Devon said as he pulled out a miniature leopard-print tracksuit. He could practically see Ellie's face if he ever brought something like that home for Madeline. "They've got to be better than this."

Nick looked up, horrified at the tracksuit. He was pretty sure he'd seen moms toting their kids around in stuff like that back in Vegas, but that was a whole different story. Vegas was kind of its own universe, really.

"You've got a point," he said, glancing back at the cheesy unicorn sweater in his hands. "But I'm still not wearing glitter and unicorns."

"No grown man in their right mind would," Devon commiserated. He counted himself lucky every morning he got to put on a plain t-shirt.

A lot of island living was pretty cool in Nate's opinion. Life at home hadn't prepared him for it, but he liked having to walk to services, not have them come to him, and hear birdsong instead of cars and people yammering away on their cell phones (Nate included). He liked building his own hut, even if it was pretty pathetic. He liked cleaning his boat and stupid stuff like that.

Laundry, though. Laundry he was totally useless at and would have been quite happy to let Jane take care of, if for some reason the Archibald maid did show up and wanted the job. Adding Kate's clothes into the mix didn't help, and he always ended up on the floor sorting clothes for an hour. So he was happy to see Devon there when he came in, a giant bag over his shoulder.

"Hey man," he said, kneeling down. "Mind if I sort while you pick? I'll go crazy doing this stuff with no one to distract me."

Devon gave Nate a grin when he saw him and gestured for him to take up a spot wherever he pleased. "Yeah man, knock yourself out. I'm just trying to get as much as I can."

He glanced quickly over at the pile of clothes Devon was accumulating and grinned as he sat down and untied his bag. "Good thing babies don't care about their fashion. Like, I never understood those designer baby clothes back home. Who's an infant going to impress with drool coming out of its mouth?"

"Who knows," Devon said agreeably. Living around L.A., it was hard not to see women walking around with their babies dressed in designer clothes that matched their dogs. It was ridiculous. "Other moms who dress their kids up like toys?"
