Try though Serena might to keep herself busy, sooner or later, around here, it seemed she always ran out of things to do. More often than not, she wound up sitting in the Hub on the weekends, just to be somewhere with a crowd. It was a little sad, she thought, but more so because she knew, if he'd still been here, Chuck would have told her it was. ( Read more... )

"So what is it, blondie?" Rizzo asked, drink in hand and provoking smile on her face, sitting down at the next table over from the girl, her legs crossing almost reflexively. "Bad breath? Scurvy? Personality of a wet fish?"

Serena laughed, brow furrowing, a touch confused but not minding. "Who, me?" she asked. "Hm. Maybe the last one. Definitely feeling a little fishy today, and I'm pretty sure scurvy's not much of an option around here." There was something familiar about the other girl, but then, she could have said that about most people here.

"'S gotta be something, or you wouldn't be sitting over here all by your lonesome." She said, taking a drink out of the glass in her hand. Rizzo wasn't exactly one to talk, she didn't exactly have a hoard of comrades to sit around and chat with. She was an independent sorta gal, but she never realized how much she'd miss having the Pink Ladies around when they were gone.

Serena laughed, brow going up a little. "Guess so," she admitted. "I guess I just wasn't feeling much like company for a little while there. But hey, you're talking to me, so it can't be all hopeless, right? I'm Serena." It was sort of a relief to have another girl her own age to talk to these days. She had a few stand-by friends, but still she managed to feel pretty lonely a lot of the time.

Chase wandered into the Hub barely dressed and nut brown. He'd been hitting the surf with the board he'd gotten way back when it was snowing, and as he walked into his favorite place to get obliterated he leaned it against the wall. Carrying it back to the treehouse later would be a bitch. He was probably going to pass out on top of it on the beach.

Maybe he'd get eaten by crabs.

He pushed his hair back from his face with both hands where it stayed, coarser than usual with the drying salt water, and surveyed the bar. He smirked a little and ambled over to Serena.

"What is this, more speed dating? Don't even tell me you're chilling solo."

"Okay," Serena said, grinning, leaning her chin on her palm, "then I won't tell you. In case you hadn't noticed, Chase, I've been chilling solo for a long time now."

It just wasn't Blair's scene, for one thing, and for another, Nate had a girlfriend and Kate had never struck Serena as the type to hang out in bars. Times like this, it seemed like every guy around here was gay. At least she had Chase to keep her company.

He slid into the seat beside her and planted his elbows on the counter.

"I'll drink to that." He gestured to the person behind the bar, who looked at him with a sort of wary resignation which Chase chose to ignore, before returning his attention to Serena.

"So how's it going?"

"Very, very slowly," Serena decided, looking to the barkeep with a quick smile, following Chase's gesture. It was almost like home in this one respect - she never had to worry about who was paying for the drinks. She grinned at Chase, shaking her head. "No parties, no one keeping me company until just now - I was almost starting to miss school."

"You know," Kon said, flashing Serena a quick smile, "there's something wrong about seeing you here alone without a group of people around you." Once upon a time, the same could have been said about him and his flock of Hawaii admirers. "I don't suppose I can start the gaggle of followers tonight?"

He nodded at the chair. He was having his own identity crisis. What was he in a world where he called Lex Luthor his father and where he wasn't dating Cassie? It was almost impossible to believe and yet here it was.

Serena laughed, leaning her elbow on the bar and ducking her head a little. It felt like forever since she'd last been surrounded by throngs of friends and flirting guys, and she missed it a little. It had been nice, being the center of attention.

"You're welcome to try," she said, brow going up a little as she grinned. "I don't know if it'll work, but I appreciate the effort."

"I don't know," Kon warned, shaking a finger at her. "I used to be the big thing in my day. You might have a rival for the affections of the crowd. Mine were usually in the form of bikini-clad female tourists, though, so I might leave the muscular beefcakes to you."

There were definite times when Serena reminded him of a female version of him. Sometimes.

Giggling, Serena shook her head, tossing her hair back over her shoulder. "That's very sweet of you," she teased. "Let's just hope they don't just prefer each other." Obviously she had nothing against people being gay or experimenting or whatever, but sometimes she felt the odds were against her, something she'd never really had to deal with before this place. "Either way, between us, this place'll never know what hit 'em, am I right?"
