It's a longer walk to the smaller waterfall, which, so close to so many homes, generally seems crowded to Emma. She can deal with the people, though, and she doesn't mind the exercise. It's preferable to the other one anyway, so close to Jean's house; she'll be damned if she's returning to the scene of that particular crime anytime soon. Or ever ( Read more... )

"Nature's not so bad," Devon said, coming up beside her. He'd been on his way out of the water after a quick dip when he saw her thrashing, and couldn't resist at least checking to see if she was alright. "You okay there?"

Was this the one she'd met before? No, Emma decided, the accent was different. Just as well, since, if she'd known that one's name, she'd forgotten it. That, though, didn't matter as much as the fact that something had bit her and she was probably going to get some ridiculous jungle disease.

"Aside from being bitten by God knows what," she said, starting to limp toward the shore (exaggerated, but maybe not unwarranted), "I'll survive."

It was easy and natural enough for Devon to slide into the concerned doctor role, and he offered her a hand. "Come on, I'll check that out for you. I've got a first aid kit in my bag. It was probably just a startled fish, but we can get it disinfected and bandaged up, just in case."

Emma hesitated a moment before taking his hand reluctantly, letting him help her from the water. "You just carry a kit around with you?" she asked, unsure if this meant he was actually somehow licensed to practice medicine or he was just some kind of Boy Scout, forever prepared. "How convenient."

"That's what you get for not choosing a personal swimming ground," Adrian chastised mildly, tilting his head to the side. He'd caught a glimpse of her while walking past and had stopped to say hello. Overhearing her comment, he couldn't help the slight superiority that came so easily. "I've been working on a private pool. Indoors, of course."

Emma rolled her eyes, not troubling to be anything less than obvious about it. Adrian was a darling, but, at times, insufferable.

Of course, that was probably why they got along.

"I'm afraid we just can't all have your talent," she said wryly. "Had I realized it would become necessary, I might have spent a little more time on architecture and engineering and less on Wall Street." That was, of course, a lie. That was what money was for - hiring someone else to do all the planning and manual labor.

"You are, of course, invited when I complete it. It's a small sunroom with a pool. I'm currently designing the windows and digging the foundation myself. I find myself terribly bored most days. This gives me something to do," he remarked, almost calmed by the thought of such a constant and calming labour.

No matter how bored Emma often was, she wasn't prepared to stoop to that level yet. Regardless of the source of her wealth, she'd been born a Frost; they got their hands dirty in other ways. "That's kind of you, dear," she said as she made her way out of the water. "Provided, of course, that whatever just bit me isn't poisonous and I haven't died of some absurd unknown jungle disease before the day is done."

"I happen to find it to be refreshing," Alice chirps, swinging down from a tree to land next to the pool of the waterfall. What had been going on before she'd decided to return to the ground went unseen by her and she's just fine with that. It's one thing to invade someone's supposed privacy; it is quite another to know what they were up to before you do it.

"Totally unpredictable. It's fun."

Of course a girl who swings about in trees would think that. Emma, however, isn't some kind of a monkey.

"Yes," she says, "right up until everything in creation decides it's time for lunch and you're the main course." And even before that, she was less than enthralled.

Alice lets out a snort of laughter. It's more of a giggle than anything else, but somehow the notion of being on anyone's food chain cracks her up.

"I would like to be the cheese course. Maybe the fruit, but I'm certainly not going to be an entrée. And besides, most scary things are scared of something else."

"I'm sure I sympathize somewhere deep, deep down inside," Emma deadpans, staring at the girl as if she's got two heads before she starts making her way out of the water. Of all the inane responses to provide.

Sean doesn't make a habit out of frequenting any of the local hot spots when he's not on duty (at least, none of the ones without bartenders), but hearing a yelp like that this early in the day proves to be curious enough for him to pick his way over, trying to decide whether he should be disappointed or not when he notices who it came from. "Doubt it's too fond o' ye either, lass," he says dryly, crossing his arms as he looks down at her. "The hell happened?"

"Something bit me," Emma snaps, jaw set as she looks over at him. Wonderful, someone she knows to make a fool of herself in front of, because that's what this moment needed: an audience. Glowering, she starts wading toward the shore. If he says one goddamn word about her deserving it or so much as smirks, she's kicking his ass. "As if this insufferable island weren't horrible enough already, the wildlife is now directly attacking me."

Alright, definitely not disappointed, then. "As opposed ta indirectly attackin' ye," Sean says, deadpan but for the tiniest quirk of his lips that he can't be bothered to hide as he stays where he is and watches her dredge herself out of the water. It couldn't have happened to a nicer person. "Ye alright?"

"Ha ha," Emma says flatly, reaching for her towel when she reaches her rock, steadying a hand on it. Peering back over her shoulder, she lifts her leg to get a better look at it, patting the (admittedly minor) wound dry. "Oh, of course I'm alright - practically delirious with joy."
