If you had been upstairs in the Compound or in the Hub at six in the evening of December 31, you might have thought your eyes were playing tricks on you, or that you'd once again been whisked off to some strange, new place. Within the blink of an eye, the rooms had changed, sparkling instantly with festive decorations, and it was all so ( Read more... )

New Years' Eve. Daniel had quite a bit more to be thankful for this year. He wasn't alone, for one. He had Patrick. He also had Jack, both of them, Vala, Alcuin, Crichton, Guy, and everyone else he knew on the island. He was content. And maybe him being content always boded ill for the near future, but it was New Years' Eve and this year, he wasn't going to be shoved aside by Logan and he wasn't going to kiss someone else's boyfriend when the clock struck midnight. He also wasn't going to go home with Vala and wake up the next morning not knowing what happened.

He got himself a cup of coffee. The rich, expensive kind that might have only been made better had Ianto made it. And for all Daniel knew, he had. He turned from the table to see who was around that he knew and narrowly avoided splashing someone with hot coffee. "Oh, god, I'm sorry. Are you all right?"

"Daniel! You might have scarred me for life!" Guy said at first, absolutely aghast, and looked to the drink nearly spilled. "What on earth possessed you to drink coffee on a night like this? Afraid someone might sit on your glasses again? Please tell me you're not determined to stay sober, you dull man." He laughed.

"Guy, I'm not sure there's anything that I could do that would scar you for life except maybe have sex with...with a woman with you present." Daniel specifically did not say Vala because A: he was reasonably sure that Guy would be less scarred and more making comments if it were Vala and B: ...because it was Vala.

He sighed. "I wasn't planning on drinking, no, but I have a feeling you're going to try to change that." He cuddled his drink to his chest. "Let me have this, first. As much as I love Ianto's coffee, he only has a limited kind of coffee bean to work with. This?" He took a sniff of the coffee and closed his eyes, smiling softly. "This is heaven."

"Clearly you have yet to taste the whisky," Guy retorted, but not worried that Daniel would remain sober throughout the evening. He would have certainly not let that happen. "Having a good time?"

Last year, one of the highlights for Stephen was seeing his very own ice cream flavor suddenly appear. Therefore, he was not going to rest until he found it again.

He walked around, through the crowds of people, supposedly mingling. Really, he was peering around and over people's shoulders to see what food items they held in their hands. He was under the assumption that he was being very subtle.

It didn't take a spy to notice someone like him snooping around and for a few minutes, Aly amused herself by walking quite close behind him, though never close enough to be noticed, before she said with the required impish smile, "You know, I don't think you have to steal food from other people when there's plenty on the table. Unless it's New Year's custom in your world."

Stephen bolted straight up again when he was addressed.

"What? I'm not stealing food," he said defensively. It was true, though. He was just looking, and then moving on when no one had what he wanted.

"Then what compels you to inspect others' meals so closely?" she asked, laughing.

Ellie obviously couldn't enjoy the many drinks the island had gifted them for the night, but she actually didn't mind all that much. In fact, she was more interested in all the food that had shown up anyway. She was beginning to crave things that were off the island, and it seemed like anything she had wanted was right there in front of her.

She took a fairly big plateful, though she stopped herself from taking too much. There was a whole night to enjoy and she didn't want to spend it puking in the bathroom.

As she rather cheerfully ate some potato chips from her plate, she started the careful movement through the crowds to find a seat.

Devon knew Ellie would go for the food she wanted (and probably craved) with gusto, so he mostly stayed out of her way. He headed over to a table covered in refreshments had a moment of nirvana when he found the Jamba Juice, and by the time he found her again, he was holding two cups, one already half empty.

If Ellie didn't want the second, Devon would just drink that too. Waste not, want not and all that. "Finally getting to feed those cravings, babe?"

Ellie couldn't hide the sheepish expression. She knew there was no real way to hide how right he was.

"It just seems like a waste if I didn't," she replied matter-of-factly. She took the offered drink, kissing his cheek in thanks as she went. She took a sip of it once she pulled away. She had to admit, she wasn't as big a fan of the stuff as Devon was, but it'd been so long since she had it that it really tasted great. "What flavor is this one? It's good."

"Mango, strawberries, peaches...passionfruit, I think," Devon said, trying to recall a menu he hadn't seen in over a year and a half. It was a little crazy, thinking of how long he'd been around here in those terms. "They call it Caribbean Passion."

He thought about what he'd just said. "Okay, yeah, there's definitely passionfruit in there."

Gideon loved this day. Fuck, everything he felt like was at his fingertips, and he sure as hell was going to enjoy it. The food could wait. He got the strongest alcoholic drink he could find. The shit tasted better than anything he could ever afford back home, too, which was damn impressive.

He did at least think to get another glass of the shit, though he had no idea where Penny was in the huge crowd, so he was starting to consider drinking the second one once he was done with the first, too. He'd see when he was done with it.

"Found anything good?" Karen had a vodka cranberry in her hand, but was on the look out for something new and interesting. With virtually all the drinks in the world at her disposal, it felt a little silly walking around with something she'd been drinking since she was a college freshman.

And if there was on thing she could be okay with Gideon being annoyingly picky about, it was probably alcohol.

"You think I'm going to drink shit on a night like this?" he snorted, rolling his eyes. It ought to be obvious he was only going to drink the best of the best that night, since the rest of days he was stuck with a whole lot of nothing. "I have no clue what this is. Some kind of really awesome beer. Man, people need to be able to make shit like this around here."

"Just 'some kind of beer'?" Karen shook her head, looking around for something interesting to replace her drink with. "Maybe one day we'll get some kind of really awesome beer made here. We don't even have like - what's beer made out of? Wheat? Barley? Something like that. We don't have it, so we can't make it."

It was perhaps a little different from the New Year's celebrations she would have normally held. Certainly, there were no temples to Mithros or the Goddess where she could pay her respects, though she had sent her usual prayer-taunt to Kyprioth, figuring the Trickster would have no interest in emotional appeals. She sent her prayers silently all the same, hoping they would reach Tortall and the Kyprish Isles even without incense and gifts. She wasn't there to spy for her queen or to kiss he Nawat, but her intentions were strong and she couldn't waste a beautiful evening of island trickery being sullen.

Her respects paid, she'd bullied, harassed, and annoyed the clothes box with every ounce of her formidable persistence until it had produced a new dress for her, one that was light and airy and showed every movement she made. Dressed, she approached the party was a perfect smile, ready to celebrate the rebirth of the year.

It's hard to talk with your mouth full of burger, but I couldn't help but say, "This is great! This is--" Then I realized who I was talking to... and she looked great. And I hurriedly closed my mouth, chewed properly and swallowed before I faced her properly and said, "Did you know the Island did this during the New Year?"

Somewhere between moments of plotting a rebellion, Aly had given up flirtatious ways, realizing they were exactly as silly as Mother had accused them of being, but there were still moments when she found herself savoring reactions like this and she gave him a wide grin. "No! I didn't," she admitted. "It's a fine surprise!"

"There seems to be everybody's favourite food here," I said. Then I stopped when something hit me. I looked at her, curious. "Have you seen anything you particularly like?"
