With his head bent, his gaze on his notes, Capa pushed open the Compound door and stepped outside, his shoe crunching loudly in the snow that dusted the front step. Pausing, he lifted his head and closed his notebook in one smooth motion, staring out at the island and the sudden change that had occurred ( Read more... )

It had been a late night for Eden, bent over a book in the kitchen with a cup of tea until she'd realized the tea had gone cold and she'd no idea how late it was. That she spotted Capa as she emerged from the kitchen offered no clarification; he seemed the type to be up at all hours. "Is everything alright?" she asked, taking his expression with a little frown of her own.

"Snow," Capa answered, glancing back toward the front door of the Compound as if he expected it to follow him inside. "It's cold out there."

He couldn't help but resent it just a little. He'd grown up in it and it wasn't as though he really hated it, but the island climate had been a wonderful change. Already, only minutes into the realization that it was cold, he missed the sun.

"Oh god, again?" Eden asked, automatically following his lead and glancing over her own shoulder down the hall, though there was nothing to be seen. From what she recalled of where Capa had been before this, it couldn't be easy for him, she was sure. "It happens every year, it'll go away. The inconvenient trade for eleven months of sunshine, I guess."

The corner of Capa's mouth twisted up briefly, but he said nothing about that. Inconvenient was certainly the right word.

"I'm probably overreacting," he admitted a moment later, relaxing into something closer to a smile. "It's just snow. It's not as though I'm not used to it."

While Adrian wasn't quite clad in the warmest of wear, he was most certainly dressed for the lovely weather. It reminded him of home and of his projects and of the cold and wonderful expanse of Antarctica and the welcoming Karnak. Bubastis was quite in agreement with him as she prowled at his side, growling when she caught sight of a figure.

"Capa, is that you? Bubastis seems to think you're a threat," Adrian called over mildly.

"Only a threat to the snow," Capa grumbled, resisting the urge to do something childish like kick at the snow and see if that couldn't get rid of it. He knew it was likely here to stay, at least for the next few days.

On the other hand, Bubastis growling at him was a bit more threatening and he turned, his notebook tucked under his arm. "You'll make sure she won't bite me, right?"

"Not unless you're threatening my life." He wasn't joking whatsoever, even if the polite smile on his face might have indicated otherwise. Bubastis knew her true duties and even though Adrian was quite fond of Capa, things always changed in situations of life and death. "Do you need another coat?"

"I don't exactly make a habit of threatening anyone's life," Capa answered, still bothered enough by the snow that he didn't find any of it very funny. A second later, though, he shook his head and sighed softly, relaxing visibly, trying to convince himself it didn't matter.

"I just came out here and found all this snow," he said, his voice a bit lighter. "I'm just annoyed by it. Sorry."

Regardless of what was going on in her personal life, Mary Jane hadn't lost sight of the fact that there was still a killer on the island, someone who would more than likely want her dead, who had tried to kill her in the past. For several months, now, she'd had a sort of routine, which mostly involved never staying in one place for too long. She was glad for the cold -- it was a nice change, if an unexpected one -- but it did make finding different places to stay particularly difficult ( ... )

"I'm not a fan of the cold or the snow," Capa answered, glancing over at the young woman and offering her a faint smile. It was more than that, of course, but it wasn't something he liked to talk about at the best of times.

"It makes me wonder how warm the rest of the island will be," he added, holding the door open so she could go inside ahead of him. He could walk back, but he'd need a coat first, and he was in no hurry to head home just yet. "The huts aren't exactly insulated."

"I've heard they usually change with everything else," Mary Jane offered, shrugging a little. She couldn't help sounding hopeful; her own experience with snow on the island was limited to the blizzard in June, when nothing had been altered to accommodate the colder weather. That day, though, wasn't exactly something she cared to spend too much time thinking about now, so she smiled instead, dusting some snow off her shoulders once she was inside. "I'm not going back out in this to find out tonight, though."

"That's probably a good idea," Capa answered and it was hard not to notice that she was pretty -- like everyone else on the island, really -- and he wondered if she, too, had clones running around all over the place. It was unsettling to see and, worse, he felt stupid about the fact that it unsettled him.

"I'm Robert Capa," he offered. "I was just going to head back to the kitchen for something warm, if you want to join me."
