With his head bent, his gaze on his notes, Capa pushed open the Compound door and stepped outside, his shoe crunching loudly in the snow that dusted the front step. Pausing, he lifted his head and closed his notebook in one smooth motion, staring out at the island and the sudden change that had occurred.

"You have got to be kidding me," he muttered, his breath puffing out in the cold and he took a few steps forward, taking in the trees around him. Whatever had happened, he knew it wasn't because the sun had suddenly gone out, leaving the island to lapse into a solar winter, but even that logic couldn't stop the rapid pounding of his heart and Capa had to reach out blindly for a nearby tree, his fingers curling over the cold branch.

Over the months, he'd grown used to seeing the sun every day, to the green grass and the trees, to the warmth; everything he'd never had growing up. Now it was gone. The last time, during his arrival, the snow had only lasted for a few days and he found himself hoping that this would be similar. He couldn't go back to living in a snow and ice covered world. Especially not one with a merry looking train chugging along a track.

His jaw set in irritation, Capa turned back to the Compound to find something warmer to wear. He couldn't walk back to his hut in the middle of night in this sort of weather. Growing up in a solar winter was one thing, but being thrown right back into it without any warning was something else entirely and as his shoe skidded in the ice, Capa cursed under his breath and grabbed the branch again, squeezing his notebook tighter. Even the Compound looked different and while he imagined he was supposed to find the entire thing cheerful, he felt far from happy.
