'This is getting rediculous,' Felicity thought, looking over inside the clothing box, wearing the white and blue floral gown that she first had her first day here ( Read more... )

Michael had been on the island long enough to know that sound, that huff of frustration that the clothes box seemed to call up in just about everyone who encountered it. Just how frustrated that huff was usually made it apparent how long a person had been around.

“Don’t take it too hard if it gives you trouble. You sort of get used to it being uncooperative after a while.” Luckily for him, he had no business with the box that day, and had just wandered into the storeroom in order to return a few tools he'd borrowed the previous week.

She looked over her shoulder. "It's been helpful, but," she blushed, not having to ever ask men for help for clothing advice. "I want something more from this era, and I don't know what's appropriate and what isn't."

"Oh. Well, I think denim and t-shirts are pretty acceptable across the board." Mike was hardly a fashion guru, especially not when it came to young girls' fashion, but he'd worked with plenty of kids back home over the years, so wasn't completely clueless.

She laughed, a little weakly. "So I see, but.." how do you explain about what goes under them. "I'm from 1776, so I'm not used to wearing trousers or short pants."

Maybe that should explain things.

Trisha had been less than social since Joe's disappearance, spending a lot of her time at the Officer's club looking for Web on his rare appearances, or pitching her tent to spend most of the day outdoors and sometimes the night. Though she had begun to live at the Homestead permanently rather than at the Children's Office or hopping from home to home between the people who loved her, she still did not spend a great deal of time there. With joe gone and her staying a door down from where he'd been, it had been hard for her to stick around when she wasn't sleeping, so the arrival of another girl so close to her age had gone entirely unnoticed by Patricia McFarland ( ... )

Felicity turned towards the speaker.

As out of sorts as she was to find herself in a new place, it was a sort of comfort to find that not only was it more 'out-of-doors', but there were other girls there as well. It was a comfort, even though they weren't from her era. So she had seen the girl off and on the area, but she'd always seemed troubled by something and Felicity didn't want to intrude.

She observed the girl in what was more modern clothing-or more modern than hers. Surely she could help her.

"Tis because I'm looking for something other than a gown or petticoats," She said, finding it strange to talk of such an object as though it were an animal. "And I can't quite decide."

It was just as that winter when she was invited to the governor's palace, and she was taken by all of the trimmings at the milliner's shop.

All at once, Trisha grinned. "Don't let it hear you," she said in a stage whisper, "or that's all you'll get."

She didn't know the girl, but all at once she was delighted.

"I mean, I like your dress, it's real pretty, but it looks hot," she commeted, picking at the cuff of her shorts.

Approaching, she knelt down beside the other girl. "I'm Trisha," she said

She grinned back, looking at her from the side.

"I'm Felicity, but most people call me Lissie," Well, her friends and family did, and she hoped this girl could be her friend.

"Thank you, it's actually one of my cooler gowns, but I can't get anywhere unless I take baby steps. I like what you're wearing," well, minus the tears, but that was besides the point. "You don't have to bother with stays or petticoats."

She reached back into the box.
