Not having to play games with distractions like wind gusts or the smell of great food made this baseball game a little easier compared to the last. Well, sort of -- no matter what was going on, it was hard for Devon to find any faults when he was having fun playing a sport he loved. It helped that his team won, for once. Sure, winning wasn't ( Read more... )

Rogue was all smiles for the team. Pats on the shoulder, thumbs up, whatever it took to convince herself as well as them that her head didn't feel like it was splitting down the center. She'd taken a couple hard slides that, if she were totally honest with herself, hadn't been necessary. But the distraction provided by the additional risk and subsequent pain had seemed a worthwhile gamble.

Now the game was over.

So what was next?

"What was that all about, before?" Johnny asked, having waited only long enough to grab something to drink before confronting Rogue. He had a lot of time alone out in right field, and the more he thought about it, the less he liked Rogue imitating Ben just to get at him.

Rogue blinked, bewildered, turning to face Johnny.

"What was what when?"

"What was--? 'Don't get testy, shrimp,'" he repeated, looking overly serious as he repeated what she'd said with his best imitation of Ben -- and over the years, he'd grown pretty damn good at it.

"That was not cool," he went on in his normal voice. "Mock me if you want, whatever, just don't bring my family into it."

Two games, two wins. Cable was pretty sure he had this whole baseball thing down, now.

It would admittedly be nice if his team could manage not to fight among themselves as well, but dream knows that was asking for too much. At least this time no-one was shouting at him. Yet, anyway.

It wasn't exactly one of his typical hobbies, but Adrian was fast losing any reason to protest an organized sport to keep his attention. He drifted somewhat closer to a familiar face while the game was over. "You played well out there," he praised, voice mild and even.

"Thank you, Adrian," Cable replied evenly. "I like to keep myself in shape."

"Well, that much is evident by just looking at you," Adrian smoothly remarked, his appreciative eye having noticed that aspect of Cable a great deal of time back. "I'm surprised that more of your competitors aren't frightened by your clear advantage of strength."

Jamie's participation on the baseball team came down to one thing and one thing alone: Rogue had asked and he'd owed her a favor for jumping off a cliff. He hadn't played the game for years -- though when he had, he'd pretty much been the entire team, such was the nature of his mutation -- but he lacked any real sense of nostalgia for America's pastime. It wasn't, after all, very noir.

Winning was nice, though -- if unsurprising, given their lineup -- and as he ambled towards the equipment bags to put away a stray ball, he half-whistled, half-hummed "Take Me Out to the Ball Game", all the while keeping a wary eye out on the rest of the team. Baseball itself carried few memories, but superheroes were statistically unable to work together without a fight breaking out, and with so many different allegiances represented, it was only a matter of waiting until it was really just like old times, and someone got a punch to the face.

No matter how much time has passed, Rahne still can't help being a little pleased every time she sees Jamie in something approaching a good mood. Of course, the fact that they've just won probably has everything to do with that, but it's little things like that that can count the most, and she isn't about to take this for granted.

"Ye played well out there," she says, resting a hand on his shoulder as she approaches, a crooked grin on her face. "Gonna stick around for a while?"

"And miss the show that's about to go down?" he asked, nodding over towards Rogue and Johnny with a laugh. In reality he was a bit more concerned for Rogue's sake than he was letting on, but her business wasn't his to tell, and it'd been a while since he'd had anything resembling a secret. "I think I'll be here for a while."

"Of course we couldn't make it one single game without a fight breaking out," Rahne says with a sigh, more to herself than to Jamie, shaking her head a little. Admittedly, it's the slightest bit amusing, and she can't say she's surprised, but it would be kind of nice for things to run smoothly for once. Glancing from Rogue and Johnny back to Jamie again, she asks, "What's going on, anyway? Do ye have any idea?"
