Not having to play games with distractions like wind gusts or the smell of great food made this baseball game a little easier compared to the last. Well, sort of -- no matter what was going on, it was hard for Devon to find any faults when he was having fun playing a sport he loved. It helped that his team won, for once. Sure, winning wasn't ( Read more... )

Two games, two wins. Cable was pretty sure he had this whole baseball thing down, now.

It would admittedly be nice if his team could manage not to fight among themselves as well, but dream knows that was asking for too much. At least this time no-one was shouting at him. Yet, anyway.

It wasn't exactly one of his typical hobbies, but Adrian was fast losing any reason to protest an organized sport to keep his attention. He drifted somewhat closer to a familiar face while the game was over. "You played well out there," he praised, voice mild and even.

"Thank you, Adrian," Cable replied evenly. "I like to keep myself in shape."

"Well, that much is evident by just looking at you," Adrian smoothly remarked, his appreciative eye having noticed that aspect of Cable a great deal of time back. "I'm surprised that more of your competitors aren't frightened by your clear advantage of strength."

"I think most of them are just grateful that baseball's a non contact sport," Cable replied with a slight smirk. "I've been told I can be intimidating."

"Yes, that you are," Adrian agreed, but it wasn't in a way that was critical so much as he was quite admiring of said intimidation. There was quite a skill involved in holding power above other people. "How have you been?"

"Oh, furiously angry, as ever," he replied lightly. "And yourself?"

"Recently recovering from a social event. You weren't there, it was a terrible affront to my feelings," he noted in a wry tone that meant that he hardly noticed if he was being honest. "I'm afraid my prior lifestyle isn't really reflected here."

"It's a common problem," Cable replied. "None of us are what we were. I used to be a head of state, myself, once upon a time."

He wondered if Adrian had been the same. If he'd ever said what he did, Cable couldn't remember it but he seemed like someone who was comfortable with power.

Adrian couldn't help his rueful smile and briefly he thought of lying, but he had spent so long lying to keep people from being threatened by his intellect. "I used to be the smartest man on the planet. I'm afraid they didn't give me the IQ test when I arrived here in order to place, but I think I could make a challenge for it. That and one of the most athletic, though perhaps not the top in that. I sacrificed the athletics for the business of making money, after all."

Cable gave a slight nod.

"I normally have nothing but respect for men of intelligence," he replied, "depending, of course, on what they choose to do it."

"With those advantages I hope you achieved you a great deal."

"I saved the world," Adrian responded easily and with the utter truth pulsating through each consonant and vowel. "I was something of a caped crusader. Not that I lead off my conversations with that fact, but I was one of two people to unveil my true identity. As Ozymandias," he spoke considerately, as if still giving an interview, "I did more good than I ever could as the mere Adrian Veidt."

Not quite so mere at all, but he didn't say that aloud.

Cable nodded again.

"You shall have to tell me more of that," he replied and none of his excitement showed in his voice. "I have spent my whole life trying to save the world: trying to unite it. It is not something that can be accomplished overnight."

"No, it most certainly is not," Adrian agreed with honesty coursing through each vein, pulsing alongside the loss of so many lives that were given in the name of peace. "I like to believe that I achieved a kind of success, but my actions were mere in the grand scope of the universe and it took many years. It will be many more before the measure of that success is visible."

"So few people understand that," Cable agreed. "What it takes to achieve real change. You have to think in decades and centuries rather than months and years."

"The short-sighted rule the world," Adrian lamented with a simple shrug. "Luckily, those with the ability to truly appreciate the timeline as a continuous event have been rather capitalistically blessed. At least, speaking for myself I have been."
