Sybil had a knack for commandeering- events, watchmen, causes. Given her rank and property, it was really duchessing, but at times it could be both. At the given moment, Sybil had commandeered the rec room

"Ah, but what happens if they say trick?" Keith said, as he entered the room, and then considered where the rivet was going on. "No, scratch that, won't come up."
"It might come under right to participate in cultural life," Keith said, pretending to give the matter some serious consideration. "You could probably sell it, kid. I'd back you up."
"You look like you're all ready for Saturday," Jen says with a friendly smile, coming in just in time to hear the 'trick or treat'. "Are you making your costume?"
"Yes," he said with the certain-sureness of a four and almost a half year old who knew what he was on about, "I am going as a Captain of the Watch! And a dragon!"
Jen glances over at the woman she guesses is the little boy's mom with a smile before turning her attention back to him. "A Captain of the Watch and a dragon?" she says, putting on a slightly exaggerated expression of someone who is very impressed. "And you thought of that by yourself? That's very creative."
The rec room had exploded with construction paper, that Vimes noticed as soon as he stepped inside. The fact that his wife and son were at the epicenter of the explosion was not particularly surprising, really. There was a holiday coming up, and it didn't matter if the said holiday wasn't actually theirs, Sybil was going to jump into it full force.
He peered at Sam in his colored paper watchman's helmet and dragon tail. "Let me guess. You're Errol."
" 'course you are. You'd fit in perfectly in the IPD. Hell, one of these days we'll probably have a dinosaur." Vetinari may have started the intergrated watch in Ankh-Morkpork, but the principle had definitely carried over to Tabula Rasa. Vimes secretly suspected the Patrician to have some kind of hand in that, even here.
Vimes looked at Sybil. "Are you dressing up?" He sounded wary. If Sybil was wearing a costume, she probably had one for him, too.
"One day early, little man," says Duck from the door. One his head is a glittering, pink tiara, a gift to him from the clothesbox that's surely meant for Sunny. He'd stuck it on his own head to prevent him crushing it in a pocket on the way home, and having gone to the kitchen after, and the shed too, Duck's forgotten he ever put the thing on at all.
His smile of greeting is shameless. "You too getting ready?"
Sam spotted the crown and hesitated, torn between paying Duck a compliment on it and laughing. But Duck's smile seemed to beg one more than the other, so he laughed.
"Is that for your costume, Duck?" Sybil asked, smiling herself.
Duck stares at them both blankly, following Sam's gaze with his hands until they meet the tiara. "Oh right," he says, cracking a grin. "Not unless I want Sunny to kill me in my sleep for my accessories, eh?"

"What is your- costume," he said, lifting another brown strip, "going to be?"
"Sam is going as as integrated Watch," Sybil said, looking pleased, although this was largely from anticipation of her husband's response.

"It's where the inspiration came from, certainly..."

"But not real ones," young Sam said, looking slightly disapproving.
"Yes, we were discussing the unfortunate lack of zombies and vampires to really show the people here what they were like. So, no, not real spirits."
