Geoffrey actually believes that the island wants him to produce Shakespearean theatre, which isn't as reassuring as a person might think. Because then he has to wonder just why the island is encouraging him in this endeavour, and just what it hopes to get out of it. He doesn't know how else to explain the fact that upon deciding on a play, the ( Read more... )

After all that had happened, Wendy felt strangely knobbly kneed and especially gangly as she paced back and forth waiting for her turn. Even if she didn't get any part at all, she would still be more than willing to help with whatever she could.

Bending her copy of the script back and forth in her hands, she took a deep breath and edged closer to the director and the stage shoving the last bit of timidity out of her person.

Doing her best shouldn't be that hard.

"Welcome, welcome," says Geoffrey, with more enthusiasm than most who know him would perhaps be expecting from him, but having a new project to work on has him all fired up. "No need to be shy. And what will you be performing for me today?"

His enthusiasm brought a smile Wendy's face. Clearing her throat, she straightened herself up to her full height.

"Helena's monologue from the end of Act one, scene one," she declared, tilting her chin up. It was a bit ambitious but she felt that she might as well try for a lot and get a little rather than fail for nothing. "Do I just start?"

"By all means," he says, inviting her with an airy hand gesture to begin. "I'm all ears."

Joey was one of the first to arrive, as eager as ever was when there was a chance for him to perform. His experience at Days of our Lives set him up excellently for Shakespeare, he thought. It was basically the same: memorising loads and loads of lines, word perfect, but not really having a clue what he was talking about. Medical jargon was just one step away from haths and thees and men dressed as fairies.

"The actor is at hand," Joey announced, making sure he was within earshot of Geoffrey, "and by my show, you shall know all that you are like to know!" His tweaking of the script impressed even himself, and there was no way he had just spent the last two hours trying to figure out the best way to make a good first impression. Not that he needed one that much; he wasn't exactly new to island theatre.

If not a good first impression, he certainly makes a memorable one. But then, at least Geoffrey had been mentally prepared for Joey to show up at the auditions.

"I see," he says, as Joey approaches. "And does the actor have an audition piece prepared?"

"He hath!" Joey made his way up onto the stage, looking back at Geoffrey and giving him an excited smile before composing himself. At first, he thought he'd wanted to go for one of the romantic leads, since he was a hot guy and there might have been a make-out scene somewhere in it with an equally hot girl. But then he'd started to read it and, wow, that Shakespeare guy really knew how to use his words. So he had spent time thinking about it properly, reading parts that he thought might highlight his strengths.

"I couldn't decide between Obe..." He checked his script. "Oberon? And Bottom." He said the name with a straight face, a testament to how seriously he was taking this. "I met this dude yesterday," he explained, "with big white wings and then I read the Cupid stuff in here? Oh boy, blew my mind." Lines properly memorised, he performed Oberon's speech to Puck in Act II, Scene I, where the King of the Faeries recalls the time he saw, "flying between the cold moon and the earth, Cupid all arm'd" and the "certain aim he took at a ( ... )

"I see," says Geoffrey with an absolutely straight face, taking a moment to just take it all in. "Yes, I feel very strongly that you should show me your Bottom now."

Jack's come with several things prepared, but since talking to Kate, he's decided that he's going to read for Puck primarily. It's sort of terrifying, because it's like nothing he's ever done and so he still has stuff prepared for Lysander as backup. Twisting his copy of the play nervously in his hands, he waits his turn, trying hard to ignore the feeling like he's going to vomit.

It's been years, after all. He shouldn't feel like barfing anymore.

"Jack," says Geoffrey warmly when he arrives. "So have you firmed up your decisions since the last time we spoke? I'm looking forward to hearing you."

"I'm gonna read for Puck," Jack says firmly, still bending the script back and forth. "I've also got something prepared for Lysander, but I definitely want to read for Puck first. If, um, that's okay."

"You don't need my permission to read for a particular part," Geoffrey assures him. "Just show me your Puck, Jack. I find myself eager to meet him."

As she waited her turn, Arya possessed a look of intense determination. This time. There were a lot of parts in this one, and she was deadset on getting something bigger.

She was damned if Duo was going to take the part she was after, too. She glanced around, and aimed a suspicious, slightly threatening glare at him across the clearing when she found him.

She had a copy of the script tucked in the back pocket of her shorts, but she was determined not to need it. She had this.

Even though Geoffrey has an adoptive daughter whom he's watched grow up from a toddler, it still sometimes amazes him to observe that same passage of times in others he's known nearly as long.

"Arya," he greets her. "It's good to see you again. I'm looking forward to your audition."

"So am I," she said, vaulting effortlessly from ground to stage and then pacing to the centre. She was maybe slightly nervous, but in the scale of things, it was nothing. The determination outweighed it.

It wasn't as big as the first time she'd been up here. Or, rather, she was bigger.

"Whenever I'm ready?"

"Any time," Geoffrey encourages her with a nod, his own copy of the play tucked away in a back pocket as well, just in case. "Show me what you've got."

Duo was kinda freaked out. Arya kept shooting him death glares from a great distance and then disappearing from view. Duo had spent the years from ages 4 to 16 finely honing his sixth "Someone's Trying To Kill You" sense, and after getting a nice relaxing break from that on the island, it was sort of perturbing for that red flag to be raised.

Luckily, he'd experienced it for long enough where it didn't really throw him off.

He'd been kicked back, a copy of the play open and folded back in one hand, watching people audition with interest, although it was the sort of wide eyed and head-tilted interest of the chronically shiftless or puppy-faced. This was of course extremely misleading, but a default was a default. He'd been falling back into with renewed skill since waking up on the island again after dreaming of home.

It was kind of weird to be parked by the stage without Polly. Mostly weird that it had been so long. Three years and he'd never auditioned. Well, you hadda branch out, try new things. Why not.

"So here you are, as promised," says Geoffrey, when some of the other auditioners have melted away, leaving Duo front and center. "Well, then. I'm looking forward to seeing what you've brought for me today."

"Signed, sealed, delivered!" Duo agreed, springing to his feet and then essentially bounding onto the stage.

"So," he started, "I was flippin' through the, yanno, collected works and thinking about this whole audition process and of course, the obvious choice is the "Check out what I did to your wife" monologue because- Clearly- but you've gotta have heard that one like how many times now? So I was thinking about Bottom but it's not verse. So ultimately, I kinda- I mean, yeah, I've been reading the 'my lady is in love with a donkey' monologue buuut I also prepared Jaques from As You Like It."

"How about you just go with your gut?" says Geoffrey, his lips twitching a little as he tries not to smile too broadly. "I'm a big believer in instincts."
