Jane's costume was not, perhaps, the most incredible or creative. In fact, it was nothing more than a dress made for a century one before hers and she wore her corset and her stockings as she would anyday. She had left Liddy in the care of Doctor Chase, who did not want to be involved in such a party and then she had bound a mask to her face in order to join the lavish delight.
Jane bowed her head in turn, old manners hardly leaving her now that she was in a new place. "I still shall take my leave of such subjects in conversation until I am more sure of their place," she insisted, swallowing down a lump of worry within her throat. "I would not want to cause such a reaction once more."
As Glen approached, he bowed to Jane rather elaborately. The bird mask he wore covered his face, and the shaman's robes he wore did the rest to create a most interesting effect Glen thought.
"Good evening, lady," Glen said. "Jane." It was not hard to know her, but that didn't bother him in the least.
Jane turned and curtsied with all the grace she felt was necessary when it came to Mr. Bateman. At least, she did suspect it was him from the voice. She was yet suspicious and narrowed her eyes in a playful gesture. "Good evening, strange sir," she noted, her tone slightly musical. "And to what do I owe such an honour?"
"The honor is mine, surely for such a pretty maid to show up at our affair," Glen said smoothly, sounding playful. "You're enjoying our party I trust?"
Jane blushed slightly, for she did not think herself pretty any longer. She felt merely as though she were pleasant enough being that she took care of herself, but it was not for any man. She was a widow and she accepted this. "I am, yes!" she agreed. "I have been watching the lovely dancing couples and the young love present."
"I believe I should love to dance in a circle as it has been some time since I have done so." Jane's eyes did sparkle as she missed the town dances and the private balls that were held in which everyone knew each precise step and she did have such a joyous time participating. "Shall you be dancing as well?"
"To begin, perhaps, though I'm not quite so spry as I once was. If the pace picks up, I may indeed bow out. But We will have to see if I can't shame a few of these fellows," he said, laughing heartily.
"I think you might shame them all if you truly put your heart to it," Jane said with such warmth that it felt good to converse with a dear friend. "And I would be never happier than if I were permitted to dance with you. I should think that would make my night. Please?" she added, eyes wide as she pleaded.
Jane was most happy to take his arm and to do precisely what he had advocated of her, letting loose a brief glimmer of joy upon her lips before it was gone. "The best try of it, of course," she concurred, only too happy to join in another dance.
"Of course," Glen agreed, and led her off into the dance, spry enough despite his earlier protests to give it a very good show. But then being part of an older school of dance didn't hurt much in that respect.
