At this point in her enforced stay on the island, a blizzard in the middle of tropical weather was less a surprise and more something new to be factored in. She'd spent the time at the compound, reasoning that even on the offchance her hut could be heated enough to manage, coordinating any ITF response was better done from somewhere where they ( Read more... )

Calliope was not a graceful child. Like most children just under the age of two, her limbs could never be trusted to do precisely what she wanted them to, and like most children, she utilized them with great abandon all the same.

Which was why it was a small miracle that she managed to leave an icy path and tromp the few feet Kendra on the log in silence.

She watched Kendra watch her foot, then pointed solemnly. "Ouch."

The girl made Kendra uncomfortable, although not, notably, because of her parentage; even if she was still unclear about whether a Cylon was a Cylon on the island, that didn't have anything to do with the child.

This was, perhaps, more leeway than she would have given previously.

No, the simply fact of it was Kendra wasn't good with children. She couldn't remember if she'd ever been.

"It's sprained," she said, and then immediately wondered that she was explaining it to a girl of less than two.

"Calliope!"

The girl aimed an irritated look through the cover of trees. Mama was always shouting something, and Kendra's booboo was far more interesting than heeding the call.

She got down on her knees to peer closer. No hint of a scrape at all, and her tiny brow knotted up. "Where ouch?"

"The ankle," Kendra said, and again wondered about the explaining. "I think your mother is looking for you."

The first thing that caught Lucy's attention as she passed by the woman sitting on a log was her striking resemblance to Prudence. She didn't usually think about New York and the people left back there anymore, not if she could help it, but a reminder like that now was enough for her to realize how much she really did miss them, in a strange sort of way. Still, mostly unfazed, she headed over to where the woman sat and dropped down beside her, a sympathetic sort of look on her face. "You okay?" she asked, clearly concerned. "Fall, or something?"

"Tripped," Kendra replied, her voice crisp and efficient as usual, half as if the words themselves were a drill. "I'll be fine; it's probably just sprained."

"Ouch," Lucy said, wincing instinctively. She'd been relatively lucky, she supposed, but then, she'd grown up so accustomed to dealing with snow that she remained fairly unfazed by it. "Well, are you okay to get back somewhere? You might not want to be walking on it yet."

"I don't suppose I have much choice," Kendra said. "I'm not exactly going to wait for someone to bring a stretcher."

She glanced around, assessing whether there was anything about that could serve as a crutch. The fact most useful sticks were probably covered with snow did not help this effort.

"Major?"

Alice couldn't believe it. The XO, putting a foot wrong? Alice, actually witnessing it? Okay, so it was an accident - on both counts - but she was still surprised, and a little reassured that Major Shaw was actually a human being. That didn't overrule the concern, though. It looked like she could have seriously damaged that ankle.

"Are you all right?" Alice asked, making her way over the slippery path. Carefully. She didn't want to do the same thing Kendra had.

"More or less," Kendra said, turning to pull her leg up on to the log, to get some elevation. "I've had worse."

They all had, probably.

"I believe it," said Alice wryly. In a lot of ways, the Major reminded her of One. Indestructible, right up until the point when he...wasn't.

She considered asking Kendra if she needed an icepack. That probably wouldn't be tactful. So instead she stuck her hands in the pockets of her heavy overcoat and looked around. If she needed a hand back to the Compound, Alice wasn't going to make a big deal out of it - she'd hate to be in the same situation.

"This weather's fucked everyone up," she said, and her mouth twisted as she thought of John, rushing around in the snow saving people. Stupid, admirable bastard.

"Many of whom weren't smart enough to just stay inside until it cleared," Kendra said, before she had to admit, "I suppose I count as one of them, now."

She was working up to asking for a hand. This wasn't ITF training, so she probably should ask, which was the problem.

Cain hadn't spoken to many people willingly over the course of the last few days. He would glare at them, offer them a grunt, but he wouldn't exchange words. So when he found Kendra, he nearly moved on. He wasn't sure why he stopped above her, except that maybe he felt like he owed her something.

"What is it?" he said tersely, not in the mood for small talk.

Kendra glanced up from her examination of her ankle.

"Sprained ankle," she said, tone as clipped as usual. She appreciated the lack of small talk, in general. She'd lost the knack.

Cain gave a sharp nod and made his way around to her front to start poking and prodding, pushing back his coat and kneeling down to start inspecting it. "Tell me where it's worst. I'll get it wrapped and bring you to the Compound."

"There," she said, wincing, when he prodded the spot where it stung the most. "Secondary clinic would probably be closer. I'm sure they can handle a sprain."
