At this point in her enforced stay on the island, a blizzard in the middle of tropical weather was less a surprise and more something new to be factored in. She'd spent the time at the compound, reasoning that even on the offchance her hut could be heated enough to manage, coordinating any ITF response was better done from somewhere where they ( Read more... )

"Major?"

Alice couldn't believe it. The XO, putting a foot wrong? Alice, actually witnessing it? Okay, so it was an accident - on both counts - but she was still surprised, and a little reassured that Major Shaw was actually a human being. That didn't overrule the concern, though. It looked like she could have seriously damaged that ankle.

"Are you all right?" Alice asked, making her way over the slippery path. Carefully. She didn't want to do the same thing Kendra had.

"More or less," Kendra said, turning to pull her leg up on to the log, to get some elevation. "I've had worse."

They all had, probably.

"I believe it," said Alice wryly. In a lot of ways, the Major reminded her of One. Indestructible, right up until the point when he...wasn't.

She considered asking Kendra if she needed an icepack. That probably wouldn't be tactful. So instead she stuck her hands in the pockets of her heavy overcoat and looked around. If she needed a hand back to the Compound, Alice wasn't going to make a big deal out of it - she'd hate to be in the same situation.

"This weather's fucked everyone up," she said, and her mouth twisted as she thought of John, rushing around in the snow saving people. Stupid, admirable bastard.

"Many of whom weren't smart enough to just stay inside until it cleared," Kendra said, before she had to admit, "I suppose I count as one of them, now."

She was working up to asking for a hand. This wasn't ITF training, so she probably should ask, which was the problem.

"Me too," Alice said. It hadn't taken her long to go stir crazy sitting inside with John. She'd figured he could take care of himself for an hour or two.

Probably.

Deciding to make it a little easier for Kendra, Alice took her hands out of her pockets. "Want some help back to the Compound? I won't tell anyone else in the task force." She offered a small smile.

The side of Kendra's mouth twitched.

"I could do with it," she admitted. "Didn't much feel like hopping back in the snow."

"And it wouldn't make me look good if I just left you out here," Alice agreed. She stepped up to the side of the log and offered Kendra her arm.

Kind of like sticking it in the lion's mouth, so to speak. But really, the XO wasn't that bad.

At the moment, anyway.

"I'm sure you'd find someone who'd get a laugh out of it," Kendra said. She was not, notably, complaining when she said this. It was just an observation.

She took the arm and pulled herself to her feet. Foot, really. "If you want, you can tell them that's what you did, anyway. I won't contradict you."

This occupied that strange territory of Kendra's utterances where it was almost a joke.

Alice shot Kendra a sideways look as she took her weight. She was pretty light, to her surprise. But Alice weighed next-to-nothing and had taken out countless undead with her bare hands before.

"Like I'm that desperate for peer approval," she said, amused, and set off towards the Compound. It was slow going, but she didn't want to slip and fuck them both up.

"Sheppard would probably get a kick out of hearing it," Kendra said, deliberately bland, not putting any weight on the sentence at all.

Which in itself didn't have anything to do with the fact that if Alice let go she'd probably outright fall over. It just seemed a relevant point of fact.

She considered her range of answers, from nasty to not, and finally settled on simply "Probably." Short but sweet. Or rather deliberately not sweet.

Alice'd been lucky enough to keep things pretty quiet about her...thing with John, but she guessed it was possible Kendra knew about it. That didn't mean she wanted to talk about it with her, though.

Kendra didn't immediately add anything to that, not feeling any particular need to; she'd made the comment, Alice had brushed it off, she didn't feel like going any further with it.

That might have been her desire to get off her ankle influencing her decision, though. "Maybe we should have been out shovelling these paths," she said, instead.
