The days leading up to this are long. I'm more tired than I've been in... well, maybe ever. People kept warning me, looking at me like maybe I hadn't thought this through, but maybe I really hadn't. Maybe I had no fuckin' clue how much work this'd be ( Read more... )

In all the time since the boat, I've yet to really leave Joe's side. I'd planned to stay at the bar, but that was before I got tugged into the kitchen and my face was stuffed with idle treats here and there. Fried food is good and all, but at this rate, I swear to god, I'm going to gain twenty pounds thanks to Joe. Eventually, I do slide away, just far enough so that I can still dart back into the kitchen to visit Joe, but I'm not eating any more tantalizing treats. At this rate, I'm due a ten mile run just to work off these calories.

"Hey, man, I thought this was a no-customer zone," I say, standing just outside the kitchen door as he ducks out again, arms folded and a teasing smirk on my face for the guy who I've seen around but whose name I can't place.

My eyes widen and for a very long moment, I don't see anything teasing about the statement. There's still the taste of fried squid or something on my tongue and I give the guy a look up and down. "I'm affiliated with the cook," I manage, without much humor myself. Maybe any other day, when I could get fifteen feet without needing to be back in Joe's sight, but not right now.

"Right," I drawl, arching a brow, "Whatever, man. I didn't know he needed a fuckin' entourage."

Man, this guy's fuckin' twitchy as hell.

The night before her wedding. Jesus Christ, who would have thought she'd ever say something like that? Neil slipped her a cocktail with a kiss on the cheek and she was sitting at a table picking at something that's fried and yummy and if she ate too much of it she was never going to fit into that dress she hadn't even seen yet.

Charlie sighed, shoving down the fluttering feeling in her stomach, and took a sip of her drink.
Everything was going to be alright.

"Can I get you anything else or are you good for now?" said Jess, passing by the tables and doing her part to make Neil's opening a success.

"Honey, I'm not sure that I could keep anything down," said Charlie, with a little smile, lifting her glass.

"I'm not sure that this is so good an idea, either, but Neil kinda insisted."

"And tonight, what Neil wants, Neil gets, right?" said Jess with a friendly grin. "So tomorrow's the big day, huh?"

Karen has ice-cream. Rollie says she can have a bowl, as long as she drinks her juice too and then she has to go to bed but Karen doesn't really want to go to bed.

It's pretty here.
And the ice-cream is very yummy.

"Hey, kiddo. How's it goin'?" I ask, squatting down next to the table she's claimed.

It's been a while since I seen her, and she's already grown so much, it's kinda crazy.

"Thankyou for the ice-cream," says Karen, vaguely associating Neil and the place that she's sitting in. "It's very, very yummy."

"Good. I'll tell Joe, the guy who made it, okay?" I say, lips twitching into a smile. "You need anythin' else?"

Preferably somethin' Rollie won't kill me for givin' her.

Angua lurked near the bar when she didn't see anyone that seemed to need anything. She couldn't believe she was working at a restaurant, as a waitress, no less. But, hell, it was Neil's place, and she was working with Jess. Plus, it shared her boyfriend's last name. She took that as a good sign.

Jess had dressed them both in waitress appropriate-wear, and given Angua waitressing tips. Like calling people sweetheart* and carrying around a handwritten menu with a pencil behind her ear.

When someone came in the door and sat down, Angua walked over, playing the part. "What can I get you, sweetheart?"

* Angua still hadn't figured out the relevance of this, but Jess had assured her it was important Southern Roundworld culture.

When the order's taken and she moves away from the table, I catch her eye and flash her a crooked grin, obviously struggling to hold back a laugh.

"Sweetheart, huh?"

"Jess tells me it's imperative to good waitressing," Angua said, brow arched with an Important sort of look on her face. It didn't last long, and she smirked. "We'll see how long I can keep it up."

"We aren't gettin' paid for this shit, you can say to 'em whatever the hell you want," I say, returning her smirk, "Just don't spit in the food and we're cool."

I'd been on the beach when I smelled food, and not just any food. It was as close to something like Sol's that I'd encountered since I'd been here. My stomach rumbled and the child was prompted to kick me, in case I hadn't gotten the hint. I pulled the shawl around my shoulders and headed for the scent. Imagine how pleased I was to find it a public place and not someone's home. I'd already begun to formulate a plan to get food from someone's home, but it was discarded as I walked in and looked around.

I saw faces I recognized and caught sight of a very familiar shock of blond hair. Noting the alcohol, I can't say that I was surprised that Spike would find his way here. But before anything else, food was a priority. And water. And after one particularly strong kick...a seat.

I've never met her, but I know her. And I know that the child she's carrying maybe, probably, might... not be Logan's.

So when I come over to say hello, like I've done with everybody else in the place, I try not to think about that.

I bring over a glass of water and set it down on the table in front of her. "Hey, Vala, right?"

I was watching Spike, although I didn't mean to. He was simply one of the more striking men in the place.

I certainly wasn't doing it out of some kind of affliction of feelings. Well, maybe friendship. I might go so far as that, but no farther. The sound of my own name roused me from any line of thinking that pertained to the man across the room.

"Yes?" I asked, beaming happily at the water and at the man speaking. I didn't have a chance to say thank you before I had the glass to my lips, thirstier than I'd realized I was. That seemed to be happening more and more, lately, to both Tonks and myself.

Following her eyes to the guy with brightly white hair slouching against the bar across the room, I arch a brow and turn back to her with a smirk.

"He is pretty hot." I'll give her that. "I'm Neil... This is, uh... My place, I guess. Specials are over the bar. You as hungry as you are thirsty?"
