Bunnysitting

Saffron had never owned a pet. She remembered wanting one when she'd been younger, a pretty little cat in a shop window that had practically begged to come home with her - or at least that's what it had seemed like to Saffron, back when she was young and innocent and her real name was still what she answered to. But her parents had said no, and ( Read more... )

Playboy wasn't the only rabbit on the island. And one of the others had insisted on following his owner all the way to the compound.

Xander too had been in class all day and the first thing he'd done when he'd gotten home was let Jesse out of his hutch so he could run around the hut while Xander was home. A while later, he'd decided he was hungry and left for the compound, forgetting the rabbit was out since Jesse had been in Clark's room, playing with one of the farmboy's sneakers. It wasn't until Xander was almost to the compound that he spotted the cat sized white creature following him.

And so it was an exasperated, and mad at himself, Xander that entered the compound, rabbit draped happily over his shoulders. "You had to be stubborn", he was saying to the rabbit as he passed by the door to the recroom. "I named you too well."

Xander shrugged slightly, looking down to wear his hands were running through Jesse's fur. "Clark thinks Spike wants to be more then friends, if you know what I mean. But he just watches our hut. That's it." Sure he and Clark had discussed this already but Xander just couldn't wrap his brain around it even now.

Saffron did know what he meant, and she nodded. "Well, I suppose it isn't out of the question," she conceded. "Some guys do have pretty strange ways of courting, after all."

Playboy was trying to snuggle against her cleavage, which was apparently his favorite spot, so she lifted him up. "Do you know of any other reason he'd be watching your hut?" she asked, trying to rule out any other possibility. "You knew each other back home, right? Is there some reason he'd feel obligated to protect you?"

"Strange is putting it mildly and I've had people court me by wanting to cut my head off." Xander said gloomily.

"See, I knew him back home, but from when I came from, he was still the big bad plotting our deaths. Apparently we became friends later but I don't know much about it so I don't if there's anything with that. and I mean...he loved Buffy so maybe he feels like he need to protect me for her?" He really had no idea.

Her eyes widened slightly at Xander's comment about people wanting to cut his head off, but that she could address later. "I don't know," Saffron said, shaking her head. "I could see him wanting to do that for Buffy's sake, or in her place since she's not here to do so herself. Have you talked to Spike about it?"

The thing she should worry about is how he said like it was nothing. Since compared to the rest of his life, it kinda was.

Xander sighed. "Kinda? I talked to him when Clark caught him but alls he did was question me about my relationship with Clark." He didn't go into details, since he didn't really know what they were.

Saffron smiled a little at that. "That sounds like jealousy to me," she pointed out with a knowing look. "He may be going about it the wrong way, but I don't think it's a stretch to think he's interested."

"Yeah." Xander said in a soft voice. "That's what I'm afraid of." He paused before he continued in the same soft voice. "He kissed me. On opening night. While I was freaking out afterwards. I thought... I didn't know what I thought because I don't know what to think.Period."

Well now, that was interesting. "In that case, I really don't think it's a stretch," she commented. "Do you think you could feel the same way, about him? Have an interest in something more than a friendship with him?"

Xander thought about it for a moment. And his thoughts kept coming back to the same thing.

"It doesn't matter if I did. I'm not very good at the whole more then friendship thing. Bad things happen when I try." He sighed for a moment. "Even here on the island."

"Bad things happen, huh?" She studied Xander for a moment, thoughtfully. "Does this have anything to do with someone wanting to cut your head off?"

"Yep. Or mummy girls that want to suck the life out of me." Or Slayers who try to choke him to death. "Though sometimes it's my fault too. I almost killed Cordelia." Sure, the piece of rebar she'd fallen on had down the damage but it wouldn't have happened if she hadn't seen him kissing Willow. "I just don't have much luck with these things. It's why I broke up with Jill here on the island. I didn't want it to blow up in my face and have something happen to her. And why it's safer if I /don't/ choose between Clark and Spike." And he meant it. Every word.

Jill. Saffron remembered talking to the poor girl on opening night, after she'd been shocked by Xander's performance. She never had told Xander about that, and she didn't know whether or not Jill had. "So both Spike and Clark are interested in you? Well aren't you popular," she said, fondly teasing. "How on earth did you almost kill Cordelia?"

Xander didn't know about their conversation but he did know Jill had been there opening night. It had taken one look shared between them at Mardi Gras for Xander to know and he hadn't been able to even face Jill since.

He blushed. "I've never been popular before. I really don't get it." Especially since Spike was in love with Buffy and Clark had rejected him once already. "I'm so confused." Then he ducked his head. "Well...I was dating her at the time. Spike had kidnapped me and Willow and we thought we were going to die. So we kissed. Right when Cordy and Oz, Wills' boyfriend, burst in to save us. She fled and fell through a rotten bit of floor. There was rebar sticking out of the ground and..." He couldn't finish, the images of that night flashing behind his eyes. "Yeah...so, not so much with the good luck."

She listened attentively, one hand stroking Playboy's soft fur, and cringed sympathetically when he got to the part about the rebar. "That doesn't sound pretty. I hope that's the worst of your bad luck with love, sugar."

"Almost being killed twice and almost killing my girlfriend another time isn't bad enough? Did I forget to mention how when I tried to do a love spell once, it worked on every other woman in Sunnydale /besides/ the one I wanted it to work on! And let's not forget the crazy Slayer!" And that's what happened when he let's his mouth run with out him. Shit.
