Juno totally wished she had a bike. Not that it was that far from home to the compound or the beach, but she just kind of liked biking, and... okay, to be perfectly honest she had a weird sort of pudge in the former baby-hauling area. As if it weren't messed up enough that she had stretch marks at seventeen. Though both problems weren't nearly ( Read more... )

Bart hadn't meant to overtake anyone on his afternoon run, but a person in the middle of the path was not the usual obstacle by any stretch. Slowing to scoop up the wrist-warmers and avoid a collision, he couldn't help a laugh at that.

"What's wrong with running? It comes in handy for situations that require you to run for your life," he joked.

Juno looked over her shoulder. "Bart." She grinned. "Eat my gym shorts." She popped to her feet and held out her hands for the wrist warmers. "I've never had to run for my life. But don't take that as an invitation to come after me with an ice pick or something."

He put the wrist warmers in her hand, laughing. "An ice pick sounds rather brutal, even as encouragement. But then, I like running. Not to mention probably being the fastest on the island. The real question is what are you trying to accomplish by running around?"

It was pretty simple, really. If you wanted to run for fitness, you had to add other exercises or you ended up with really muscular legs and nothing else.

Juno shrugged. "Well it's not like I'm biking to school here, so I figured I should get some kind of exercise. And if there's one thing more boring than running it's standing in one place. I'm not motivated enough to do sit-ups."

"Juno!" said Dale, both surprised and pleased to run into her in running apparel, even if she was, at the moment, doing the opposite of running. "If I'd known you were interested, I would have invited you on my morning runs. Joe refuses to join me but I would welcome the company."

Juno strained her neck to look up at him. "I don't think I like running," she said. "It's boring. Why is that if you're on a bike you feel like you're going toward somewhere, but if you're running it feels like you're running away from something?"

"That," said Dale, "is a very interesting question." Undeterred by her lack of interest in his sport of choice, he sat down on the boardwalk with her. "Perhaps it's a part of the native human fight or flight response."

Juno looked thoughtful at that. "I wonder if that means there some sort of psychological issue with guys who run track, then. I mean, Bleeker ran a lot. Around that track, over and over and over. Though knowing his mother I wouldn't be surprised if it turns out that he's just running away from life. That's kind of deep."

The wrist warmers hit Ray in the face.

"Hey," he said, stepping to the side in case she had any other hidden arsenal, "what'd I do to deserve that?"

Juno turned and looked over her shoulder, smiling sheepishly when she saw Ray there. "What, you've never been pelted by random workout accessories before?" She got to her feet, brushing sand off of her shorts. "Sorry about that. But hey, at least it wasn't my sneakers."

"Oh, sure. I was married to a woman for twelve years. Don't stay married that long without getting things like purses thrown at ya," Ray said, looking amused as hell. What could he say? In hindsight, there was nothing but affection for Stella.

"So what's the matter, jogging getting you down?"

"Oh, it's just something I thought I'd give a try, but I don't think it's for me," Juno said with a shrug, and held out her hand for the wrist warmers. "I don't know how Bleeker did it. I swear, the guy was always running in circles. You think that has some kind of psychological basis?"
