Juno totally wished she had a bike. Not that it was that far from home to the compound or the beach, but she just kind of liked biking, and... okay, to be perfectly honest she had a weird sort of pudge in the former baby-hauling area. As if it weren't messed up enough that she had stretch marks at seventeen. Though both problems weren't nearly ( Read more... )

Bart hadn't meant to overtake anyone on his afternoon run, but a person in the middle of the path was not the usual obstacle by any stretch. Slowing to scoop up the wrist-warmers and avoid a collision, he couldn't help a laugh at that.

"What's wrong with running? It comes in handy for situations that require you to run for your life," he joked.

Juno looked over her shoulder. "Bart." She grinned. "Eat my gym shorts." She popped to her feet and held out her hands for the wrist warmers. "I've never had to run for my life. But don't take that as an invitation to come after me with an ice pick or something."

He put the wrist warmers in her hand, laughing. "An ice pick sounds rather brutal, even as encouragement. But then, I like running. Not to mention probably being the fastest on the island. The real question is what are you trying to accomplish by running around?"

It was pretty simple, really. If you wanted to run for fitness, you had to add other exercises or you ended up with really muscular legs and nothing else.

Juno shrugged. "Well it's not like I'm biking to school here, so I figured I should get some kind of exercise. And if there's one thing more boring than running it's standing in one place. I'm not motivated enough to do sit-ups."

"I think that's how I got signed up for Dick's gym class," Bart said, grinning. "It's easier to just get into a habit. There's always swimming, or weights."

"I'm not a big swimmer," Juno said, "and I've never lifted weights... I suspect I'm kind of a weakling. Let me guess, you're a total gym rat, right?"

"Actually, going to the gym usually meant holding back," Bart said, remembering. "I train with friends every morning, here. As I said, habit. Feels like I'm not giving my all if I don't. I wouldn't know how not to."

Juno tried to wrap her head around that. Finally she said, "Okay, so like, how I felt without my guitar I guess. To each his own, dude."

"One of my best friends back home could bench press a semi without breaking a sweat. And my other best friend is Robin. Normal never was a strong point for me."

"Ah, but the question is, why would you want to bench press a semi," Juno pointed out. "You'd probably break the bench."

"It's impressive," Bart said, with a laugh. "According to Superboy, chicks dig a good show of strength. Robin says it's the cape. No wonder I never could get a date, except for the ones with psychotic fathers who tried to kill me."

Juno lifted an eyebrow at that. But she'd heard enough weird shit around here that it barely fazed her anymore. "Well you can run around in circles really fast if it'll make you feel better," she said. "I can pretend to swoon or something."

"I don't think anyone's ever swooned, pretend or otherwise, not for me," Bart said, holding up a wiry arm. "They throw back the scrawny ones, just like fishing."

"Oh, bah. You're not scrawny." Juno suddenly reached out and poked his stomach with her finger. "I'll bet you've got killer abs under there. Though you're asking the wrong girl anyway, I don't really mind scrawny." Which, of course, made her think of Bleeker. She was really starting to kind of miss him like crazy. Except when she started to think about it too much she imagined him at prom with soup girl.

"I wouldn't win a bodybuilding contest," Bart joked, batting away her hand. "And the extra weight I picked up here before I realized my metabolism is stuck in low gear hasn't helped." It still bothered him, that he'd gained weight. Speedsters didn't gain weight, they were too fast for that.

"Oh, please," Juno snorted. "I'm the wrong person to be complaining to about that, buddy." It's a good thing he wasn't poking her stomach.
