That clinking clanking sound

Feb 16, 2009 16:49

Gelt. Harry, like any other businessman, was drawn to money. In London it had been what everything circled, the centre of what mattered; money. Making money, to be more specific, and having money to make more money. He had lived in the Consumer Age, and no matter how the world changed, spending money never again did. Money to the common man. That ( Read more... )

Cecily walked along the path in the marketplace, vaguely looking at things to provide a distraction for herself. She had nothing to trade, and no reason for anything new, but she still enjoyed the stroll. Distracted was the most proper way to describe her, especially when she found herself running directly into a man she had never seen before.

"Oh, dear! I am quite sorry!" She exclaimed, while regaining her balance.

Harry had been looking at the stands, and hadn't expected a girl to walk against him. "Hey."

A large hand grabbed her her arm, but let her go again, when it became obvious that she wasn't going to fall. "Don't worry 'bout it," he said.

"It seems to be a common occurence of mine. My mind always wanders, and I find myself meeting someone new quite by accident." She let out a small laugh, and bowed her head in greeting, "I am Cecily Cardew"

"Harry Starks, nice to meet ya," Harry replied, cautiously streching his shirt in case any creases had formed during her bump into him.

Logan didn't spend much time at the market, he never really had much reason to after all. What he wanted he either found or made, and the things that couldn't be found or made weren't likely to turn up at some stall. ...Not unless someone had learned how to make an x-box or was suddenly producing porn ( ... )

Harry in thoughts as he walked by, mindlessly rubbed a thumb by his ring finger, where a ring would have been. It had been one of those habits that one couldn’t shake, because it wasn’t thought about.

It used to cause fear in some, because it was never clear if that meant he was thinking of taking it off. And if Harry took his ring off it meant you were in deep, deep trouble.

He smiled a bit when he noticed Logan. “Not my colour,” he said dryly before turning to the other man, frowning as he noticed the bruising on his face. “What happened to you?”

Logan just laughed, prodding the bruise gently and flashing a grin. "It's a long story, but it's no big deal. Really. You might even say I asked for it," he smirked, shrugging as he slipped his hands into his pockets.

"You shopping for something?" he asked curiously, touching the dress lightly and raising a brow. "If it's for me, it's not my colour either."

"Don't ask for it next time, it's a pity." He didn't ask further. He knew to keep private matters private, especially when it concerned violence, which it no doubt was. Had it been a bump into a tree, it wouldn't have been 'a long story'.

Harry shook his head. "I was curious. This is trade; the first step to an economy. Wanted to know how it worked."

Jack was on his way out after talking to Vala and made the mistake of looking back at her. When he once again looked where he was going, he was nearly on top of someone he didn't know...two things that were incredibly rare. Jack didn't just bump into people and he was out and about enough that he knew nearly everyone's face--if he didn't know they're name as well.

"Hello," he said, stopping in his tracks and smiling at the man. A moment later he took a half a step back, just to be polite, and to allow enough room for him to offer his hand. "Sorry about that. Captain Jack Harkness."

People seemed to do that a lot around here. London was more crowded and yet people had the sense not to bump into him. “Never mind. Harry Starks,” Harry replied dryly, accepting the hand with one, and straightening his shirt with the other.

"Oh...I've heard your name," he replied. It was funny- this wasn't what he'd pictured when Logan had told him about the guy from the beach.

"It's nice to meet you. Were you going or coming? Or just seeing what's available?" he asked, turning to gesture to the table he'd come from. "If you're just looking, avoid Vala. She'll talk to you until you walk off or go deaf." He said it affectionately, though. He couldn't help that he was fond of the alien woman, not only because she was pretty, but because it clearly was unsettling for Daniel.

Harry arched an eyebrow questioningly. "Oh yeah? Where?" He asked.

The way he talked of her, made Harry assume it was his girlfriend or something. "I was just passin'. See what's around."

Willie Dunne had gotten through St Valentine's day largely unaffected by the whole thing. He had, however, eaten far too many chocolates than was strictly healthy. He was still feeling a bit poorly two days later, but he was certain he'd be fine in no time. Until then he held off on the building for a while, using that time instead to focus on his own project of the bricks. He'd found a few spots where he might do well to dig for clay and now he was just wandering aimlessly through the marketplace, looking for things that might help him and smoking one of Mr Burgess's bible cigarettes.

It probably wasn't a polite thing to be thinking, but he couldn't help himself remembering how much nicer Mr Gray's cigarettes were.

The boy looked a lot better, healthier than he had when they last met. He was looking at some stand and Harry decided to greet him.

"Hello, Willie," he said, when he got to the stand.

Willie still didn't like to be startled by people walking up behind him suddenly, and he probably never would be entirely accustomed to it either, no matter how long he had to get over it. He jumped a little when Mr Starks came up behind him like that, hands instinctively going for a rifle that wasn't there.

"Oh! Hello, Mr Starks."

Harry noticed the automatic reaction and recognised the sort of movement. "Don't get worked up, it's just me," he said defensively. "How have you been?"
