That clinking clanking sound

Gelt. Harry, like any other businessman, was drawn to money. In London it had been what everything circled, the centre of what mattered; money. Making money, to be more specific, and having money to make more money. He had lived in the Consumer Age, and no matter how the world changed, spending money never again did. Money to the common man. That ( Read more... )

Jack was on his way out after talking to Vala and made the mistake of looking back at her. When he once again looked where he was going, he was nearly on top of someone he didn't know...two things that were incredibly rare. Jack didn't just bump into people and he was out and about enough that he knew nearly everyone's face--if he didn't know they're name as well.

"Hello," he said, stopping in his tracks and smiling at the man. A moment later he took a half a step back, just to be polite, and to allow enough room for him to offer his hand. "Sorry about that. Captain Jack Harkness."

People seemed to do that a lot around here. London was more crowded and yet people had the sense not to bump into him. “Never mind. Harry Starks,” Harry replied dryly, accepting the hand with one, and straightening his shirt with the other.

"Oh...I've heard your name," he replied. It was funny- this wasn't what he'd pictured when Logan had told him about the guy from the beach.

"It's nice to meet you. Were you going or coming? Or just seeing what's available?" he asked, turning to gesture to the table he'd come from. "If you're just looking, avoid Vala. She'll talk to you until you walk off or go deaf." He said it affectionately, though. He couldn't help that he was fond of the alien woman, not only because she was pretty, but because it clearly was unsettling for Daniel.

Harry arched an eyebrow questioningly. "Oh yeah? Where?" He asked.

The way he talked of her, made Harry assume it was his girlfriend or something. "I was just passin'. See what's around."

"Logan," he answered, the very same affectionate tone carrying the name. "He said you owned a club, back in the world. Seemed like you made a hell of an impression, and he's not easily impressed."

Actually, he wasn't entirely sure Logan was as impressed as he was interested in trying to wind Jack up. Regardless, none of that was on Harry.

Affectionate tones all around. Maybe there was just something wrong with his voice. "Well, I'm glad I did. Wouldn't want to gain me a bad name around here." There was a smug edge to his voice. It was true, but mostly it was an amusing thing to say to him.

"You'd have to work at getting a bad name," he chuckled. "In three years, I can count on one hand the bad names. It's paradise, but it takes some getting used to." He shrugged and flashed a smile at yet another person with things for trade, just saying hello before he returned his attention to the man.

"So...when are you from, Harry?"

That did sound like paradise to Harry. Now if only the place could get an economy together, this would be more than paradise.

"London, the late sixties," Harry said, "And what about you, Jack?"

"Oh, all over," he replied, the standard answer coming far too quickly and easily, even after all this time. He didn't mean to dodge, though, so he took a breath and waved vaguely.

"I was a time traveler. Before I came here, I was about two hundred thousand years in the future, and before that, feudal Japan. Not too long before that, London during the Blitz. I...get around." There was another short pause and he looked at the man. "Got. Things are a little different now, I guess."

A man of the world. Harry appriciated men of the world and though this chum was no Lawrence of Arabia, his history had something to it. Even so, his question was closer to home. "Ever been to London in the sixties?"

"The eighteen sixties. I didn't really get past the forties as far as the twentieth century goes. Not my jurisdiction," Jack explained. "Did I miss anything good?"

"They called it the 'swingin' sixties' f'r a good reason. It was a great time to be around," Harry smiled, and something of fondness showed through. "The people, the parties, the whole.. the whole atmosphere." It was more than evident that he had loved it and that he had missed it. Then he looked back at Jack. "What d'you mean 'juristiction'?"

"I was a Time Agent. It's a little hard to explain in twentieth century terms. Sort of like a soldier, kind of like a spy. A lot like a thief. Assassination. Whatever needed done." He gave a little shrug, absolutely unapologetic for what he was saying.

"The Agency had the approval of the Shadow Proclamation, but by twentieth century terms, it sounds like what I did was criminal. We did good work." Of that, he was certain- even if he did hate the Agency now. "And my jurisdiction for earth was mostly limited to the late nineteenth century to just after the second world war."

It did sound criminal. It also sounded like it came straight from one of those shows Jack used to like to watch before he drooped to some drunk stupor on the couch (poor pathetic sod). Time-travelling and that shit. What was the name of it again? Some sort of Doctor, something. Harry never paid much mind. It sounded like a job, more than anything and Harry wasn't one to mind criminality.

"Sounds like an interestin' job," he replied, not bothered in the least, and only half believing it.

"It was," he agreed. "But that was a long time ago. Changed jobs, and then I showed up here, so...not much call for what I used to do. How about you? Has Helen gotten her hooks into your expertise? She and Warrick just got the club up and running."

"I help out," Harry replied nodding once. "It's not the same, though. It's market without economy. That's takin' half the fun away."
