Addicts Support Group

Feb 08, 2009 16:50

Kara affixed the sign to the bulletin board carefully. The urge to pull her hands away from it was strong, but the time for pretending had passed. Kara had attached her name to the sign, had attached the label of addict to herself, and there she was damned tired of moving backwards. This was a step forward, even if it made her want to puke all ( Read more... )

Lee was on his way out of the compound when he caught sight of Kara walking away from the bulletin board. Brow furrowing, he turned around to see just what she might have tacked up there.

"Addicts support group?" He read aloud.

Had it been anyone else's voice, Kara might not have heard it over the wind in her ears, but there was something about superior officers that made a soldier respond whether they wanted to or not.

She paused, catching the gloves where they slung with the sudden stop. "Yeah."

He hadn't really expected Kara to turn around, so was a little surprised when she responded to him.

"It's uh, it's a good idea," He said, caught off-guard.

"I hope so." Kara was still where she wanted to shift from foot to foot, making herself face him. Lee wasn't at the top of the list of those affected by her drinking, but he was on it. "I can't be the only helpless case on the island."

Geoffrey's in the habit of checking the bulletin board every time he passes. Most of the time it's full of random notices that he doesn't have much interest in; sometimes there are notices about kid stuff that these days, thanks to Sunny, he pays a little more attention to.

But this one, this one he notices for other reasons entirely, and he wonders if Duck has seen it yet. He wonders what the least awkward way to tell him is.

Duck doesn't expect to see Geoffrey when he exits the Compound, but he's all too happy to wrap his arms around him from behind, pressing a kiss to Geoffrey's neck while Geoffrey reads.

"What is it this time?" he asks. "New musical to profane your stage with?"

"Not yet, but I'm expecting it any day now," he says, hands in his pockets, still looking at the sign. Out of instinct, he leans back slightly into Duck's embrace. "There's... someone's starting an Addicts Support Group."

Just plain and straightforward, that's the way to go.

Duck's reads over Geoffrey's shoulder, arms slowly sliding form his waist. The rest would take too much time to puzzle out, but Duck recognizes the word Addicts well enough.

"Probably a good idea," he says finally, stepping back to rub a hand over the back of his neck. It had been for him, decades ago, but that kind of necessary hell isn't anything Duck wants to return to.

"I been sober a long time."

Nate was only walking passed, his eyes just happening to be drawn to the blond's ass as he moved, when he glanced up and caught one of the words on the board.

Addicts.

He stopped still, looking at the notice with more interest. "An AA group?" he asked aloud. "Seriously?"

Kara's eyes narrowed, not sure what to make of his incredulity, but she resisted the urge to grab the back of his neck and introduce him to the sign close-up.

"Sort of," she said instead. "I'm gonna have to adapt some of the steps."

It was just so weird, seeing something from home follow him for the first time here. Yeah, there was residual drama within his own group of friends, but for the most part this had been a vacation during which he could forget everything.

But an AA meeting... Nate hated to admit to himself that it might actually be good.

"Yeah," Nate agreed casually. He wasn't familiar with the steps, but it only stood to reason that some of them would have to be different. "But-- wow. Huh. That's... really good."

Kara's stance relaxed somewhat at that, even if it reiterated the importance of her getting this right, not just for herself, but for other people who needed it like she did.

"I hope it will be," she said. "I've never done anything like this before."

Mamet starts to say hi to Starbuck when he notices what she's doing. Instead, he reads the sign as she tacks it up.

He's proud of her, glad she's getting help, but uncomfortable at the same time. His own addiction - because he knows it is, kind of hard to deny at this point - isn't something he likes to talk about. And he knows he's gonna have to, because he'll go. For her, he will.

"Looks good," he says, looking past her to the sign.

Kara smiled over her shoulder, Mamet being one of the few people she didn't mind seeing her do this.

"Yeah," she said. "I'm a master at block lettering." She smoothed out a corner of the sign and stepped back. "Think anyone will come?"

Mamet's mouth begins to curve up, his smile hovering like it doesn't know whether to stay or go. "Yeah, I think so. We can't be the only two drunken bastards in this place."

He thinks about telling Duck, maybe. Duck's real good, Mamet's never seen him drink, but he still might want to.

"Not with the kind of parties this place is fond of," Kara agreed. She slung her arm around his waist, taking more comfort in the warmth of his side than she'd ever admit to. "Especially now that there's a strip club to get shitfaced in."

"Huh," says Rollie, reading the sign over a couple of times. He really shouldn't be surprised, given what he knows Kara's been going through lately, but he is a little. He never really saw her as much of a joiner. "Interesting."

"Good interesting?" Kara asked, trying not to bristle when Rollie read the sign not once, but twice. "Or bad?"

This was the right thing to do, she knew it was, but there was a very real chance that the people she respected might see her differently for needing it.

"Unexpected," says Rollie, before glancing at her. "No, it's good. Definitely not a bad thing. I hope it works out for you."

"That's the plan," said Kara, watching him closely, though the reason why has yet to gel in her head.

"Such as it is. I feel like I'm making everything up."
