Addicts Support Group

Kara affixed the sign to the bulletin board carefully. The urge to pull her hands away from it was strong, but the time for pretending had passed. Kara had attached her name to the sign, had attached the label of addict to herself, and there she was damned tired of moving backwards. This was a step forward, even if it made her want to puke all ( Read more... )

Nate was only walking passed, his eyes just happening to be drawn to the blond's ass as he moved, when he glanced up and caught one of the words on the board.

Addicts.

He stopped still, looking at the notice with more interest. "An AA group?" he asked aloud. "Seriously?"

Kara's eyes narrowed, not sure what to make of his incredulity, but she resisted the urge to grab the back of his neck and introduce him to the sign close-up.

"Sort of," she said instead. "I'm gonna have to adapt some of the steps."

It was just so weird, seeing something from home follow him for the first time here. Yeah, there was residual drama within his own group of friends, but for the most part this had been a vacation during which he could forget everything.

But an AA meeting... Nate hated to admit to himself that it might actually be good.

"Yeah," Nate agreed casually. He wasn't familiar with the steps, but it only stood to reason that some of them would have to be different. "But-- wow. Huh. That's... really good."

Kara's stance relaxed somewhat at that, even if it reiterated the importance of her getting this right, not just for herself, but for other people who needed it like she did.

"I hope it will be," she said. "I've never done anything like this before."

"You've got help though?" Nate assumed. "Like.. books or the therapists here?" He couldn't even imagine starting something like this himself, but without some help it seemed impossible.

Kara thought of the stack of books and pamphlets back at her hut, everything the bookshelf had all but vomited at her.

She nodded. "I've been reading up. And there's a psychologist coming. Dr. Sweets? At least until the group gets on its feet."

"Nice," Nate said, nodding. "So it shouldn't be too hard. I mean, he can handle all the tough stuff. Not that getting this started isn't tough in its own way," he amended in earnest. "It's really admirable, actually."

Kara exhaled on a smile. The kid was kind of sweet, though she couldn't help wondering if his interest was due to simple curiosity or something else.

"Have you, uh. Ever been to one?" she asked.

"Uh.." He hesitated, then, despite himself, huffed out a dry laugh as he shook his head. "No. My mom tried--"

He stopped entirely, realizing just what he was about to say to a stranger, someone who didn't know anything about him or his family or his life. But she was starting an AA group and would hear about it one way or another, if Nate went.

"She thought I had a problem," Nate said simply, serious now. "It was my dad."

"My mama was like that," said Kara, more quietly now. "She had a problem, I mean." She rolled her eyes at herself. "I wish I could blame that for all the stupid shit I've done."

She dropped her hands where they fiddled with the laces of her gloves. "What was your dad's problem?"

It was strangely relieving to hear her say that, instead of hearing sympathy or a well-intentioned struggle for what to say.

"Yeah," he agreed with a faint grin. "Seriously. He did cocaine. ...And money embezzlement, but that was an after effect of the addiction."

"Rough." Kara couldn't help herself thinking of Mamet. Rough wasn't a strong enough word for it.

"If you want to come," she said, "you're welcome. I'm still not one hundred percent on how it's even going to go down, but." She shrugged. "Every extra brain'll help."

"Yeah," Nate said with a shallow nod, pursing his lips as he glanced at the notice again. "Yeah, I think I might. Oh, hey." He reached out to offer his hand. "I'm Nate, by the way. Never got around to that, did we?"

"Captain Kara Thrace," Kara returned, "though if I'm gonna be spilling my guts to you later, it might as well be Kara."

She shook his hand, grip firm to make up for the way the rest of her felt so weak. "I'm waiting to see how many people want to come, but the first meeting'll probably be in the Psych Office."

It was the kind of grip he would have expected from a captain, not that he would have expected something weak from a woman carrying around boxing gloves even if she didn't have a rank.

"Sounds good. Any day yet?"

"Not yet," said Kara. "But I'll find you when I know. Where do you live?"
