you can take the girl out of the woods but you can't take the woods out of the girl

"Roads go ever on and on..." Patricia McFarland sang quietly to herself, making up some of the words and half remembering others though she couldn't recall where the song was from ( Read more... )

After leaving Jaye's trailer as the sun was rising, Joe had hiked up to the compound, the alchol that he'd drunk the night before pounding in his temples, and he'd taken a shower, and he'd eaten breakfast and now, in fresh clothes, with the sun full in the sky, he'd stumbled across a tent just off the boardwalk.

"I think it's okay right there, little bit. You comfortable?"

"Yep. I've got a sleeping bag and everything. I'm not going to stay out though," she assured him, "I just wanted to try it out. It's nice under here," she says and put down the book to put her hand under her chin. It was a battered old copy of the Boyscout Handbook.

"Yeah, well, okay," says Joe, because he ain't exactly sure how he'd have felt if Trisha had wanted to stay out, knowing the nightmares that she gets. Joe drops down into a crouch and reaches out for Trisha's book, flipping through a few pages.

His smile brightens.

"Hey! There's some pretty neat stuff in here."

"Yeah!" she said enthusiastically. "I guess it's supposed to just be for boys, but my Mom told me a lot about some of that stuff and Pete was never interested in outdoorsy things. Were you ever a Boyscout?" she asked.

Cable had never been great with children. When they were old enough to fight he could serve as their teacher but to the prepubescents he was, if anything, only a protector and while he cherished such a role, it still didn't teach him how to speak with them.

Still, he'd stumbled upon the girl and her tent and it was only right to give her a smile in response.

"I don't see why it wouldn't be. You're not hiding from the law, are you?"

Her smile became a little more uncertain. "The law? Whatta you mean?" she asked. She kept forgetting that people mostly did what they wanted around here. Even kids. "I guess not..."

"If you don't know for sure than I doubt you have a problem," Cable replied calmly.

"What's your name?" he added in the least threatening tone he could manage. It wasn't very successful.

It would have been quite something to pull of though, given that he was not only a stranger, but nearly seven foot tall, built like a rugby player and had both a gun and a metal arm and, to be fair, he didn't really have a lot of practice at trying it.

"I'm, uh, Trisha. Patricia McFarland I mean," she said warily. She put down the book, A Field Guide of Edible Plants and scooted to her knees. The few wasn't much better and she still craned up to see the impressively tall and imposing man. She swallowed audibly.

"It's very... nice," Monet said bending down to squat beside Trisha. It wasn't her idea of fun-camping- but Trisha seemed to be enjoying herself. Monet glanced around and shrugged. "I don't see why ever not, it's not blocking the path and it's not like anyone owns any land. What are you reading?"

Trisha put her finger in the book to mark her place and held it up for Monet to see. It's a battered copy of The Boyscout Handbook. "I know it's for boys, but it showed up for me and a lot of the stuff in it is real neat!"

"It shouldn't matter if it's for boys or not, girls can do anything that boys can do. And they usually do it a hell of a lot better," Monet said glancing at the book. If Trisha was joining the scout troop then she'd have to make sure her leader was suitable and up for the job. Besides a little intimidation never hurt anyone. "I'd offer to take you camping but it's not my idea of fun at all. No running water, sleeping on the ground but if you'd like I'll ask Dick for you. Now, if you wanted to spend the day getting pampered or finding new clothes then I might be interested."

Trisha grinned at Monet. She sounded like Mom a little. Dad called her a feminista or something like that when she said that stuff, usually after he'd had a few beers and usually accompanied by the b-word. But she wasn't supposed to say that one. "I like clothes too," she protested, "But I like hiking and stuff..." she said, trailing off. She had anyway.

"You could put your tent anywhere and it'd be okay," Reese murmured, crouching to get a better look at everything. "And it's probably one of the best tents I've seen in a long, long time. You been fishing with that pole yet?" Trailing beside her was Zaibas, the scaled Cardassian hound, and further back the sleek form of Austin's jaguar, Sarah, inspected a clump of bushes with a paw.

Zaibas had mellowed since his arrival on her birthday and his protectiveness fell toward 'curiously wary' but children were no threat and he knew that. He lowered his head to peer at Trisha, forked tongue flicking out in greeting as his bright and very alien blue eyes studied her with keen intelligence. He nudged Reese's elbow with his odd blue nose and snorted softly.

"Zaibas, meet Trisha," she said after a moment, laughing. "Trisha, meet Zaibas. He's a riding hound from a whole other planet called Cardassia and I promise he won't bite. Nor will Sarah over there. They're both very well behaved." Zaibas sat as if to second that and his long, ( ... )

"I just got it. I mean it showed up for me, all tucked up neat and stuff on my bed." She beamed and then nodded. "I went fishing with Joe and Web."

She looked curiously at the jaguar and the strange beast with Danny as they came into view. Her eyes widened and her jaw dropped open. She didn't know which beast to be more frightened of, the one she'd seen in books or the one she hadn't. And it was looking right at her too. Se gaped at Danny when she actually laughed. "W-w-what is it?" she caught the word and it rang a bell but she couldn't quite place it, she was too busy staring at the thing staring at her.

"His name is Zaibas, which means lightning in Cardassian," Dani murmured. "He's a...well. I guess he's a big blue, scaly alien puppy dog a good friend of mine's species rides." She thumped the riding hound's shoulder and he made a soft, eerie sort of sound that was curiously happy and then flopped down with his nose pointed in Trisha's direction. His whiplike, scaled tail wagged hopefully behind him as he waited patiently, his eyes on the girl's face as his tongue flicked out in her direction again.

"He's big and might look pretty mean, but he won't bite," she said gently, laying her fingertips on Zaibas's massive head. They'd been over the biting before and he'd learned pretty quick that unless Reese was in serious trouble or there was a predator about, he wasn't to hurt a damn thing. Zaibas was well trained to begin with and learned quicker than just about any dog she'd ever owned.

He made another softly pleading sound and snuffled stretching himself out until his nose was most definitely within reach even as Reese rubbed a ( ... )

Trisha looked up at Danny uncertainly and didn't make a move to touch the creature. And that word bothered her. Dad would have said it was caught in her teeth. If she just let it alone for awhile, she'd remember.

"Um... yeah, but not today. We didn't go today," she repeated herself nervously. Despite Danny's reassurance, she was still looking at a huge beast she didn't recognize, and a huge beast that she did, although the big cat was paying her no attention at all.

She heard the sounds Zaibas continued to make, the oddly puppyish look he was giving her, and still laying on her stomach, stretched her arm out along the ground. She hesitated before tentatively putting her hand on the tip of his nose.

"No, ya took my camping spot. I'm here to take it back. Hostile pup tent takeover," Bill teases, poking at the tent with a crutch.

"Bill!" she protested. "You don't even have a tent with you! Anyway, there's room for two," she pointed out. And there would be too if she didn't have her gear and books so spread out. She grinned at him, and batted at the shadow of the crutch against the tent wall, but failed to actually hit the tip of it as it touched the tent.

"That's why it's a takeover," Bill says, crouching down slow and careful to check out what she's got in there.

"So you got anything good in there? S'Mores? Dirty magazines?" he teases.

She stuck her tongue out at him and then grinned, rolling her eyes up a little at the thought. "I wish I had s'mores. But you need a fire first." She'd been reading about how to make one but she thought maybe she should at least wait until there was an adult around. And for night. Fires weren't as fun during the day. "I've got some books, and a tent, and a fishing pole though. Lots of stuff!"
