Marcus was sitting under a tree, within view of the compound he had no intention of entering. He had been walking, pondering everything and nothing, when he realised that the island had taken his last real friend when it sent Teyla back to…where ever it was people went when they left. Everyone he had loved, with the exception of Evey, had gone. ( Read more... )

After the initial fit, the loss of Austin had faded to a dull ache in the back of his mind. A nagging reminder of the island's ruthlessness, and a reminder of exactly why he couldn't sit back and build that 'life' Morgan had talked about. He wasn't sure what the hell the alternative was anymore, but he was managing to keep himself from shutting into a daze ( ... )

Marcus returned the slight nod. "Good day for a run?" he asked. It wasn't original, as far as openers go, but it would suffice. "I had considered the idea myself."

He gestured toward the sky with a small, amused smile. "Always a good day around here."

"Well, with the exception of the December winters, I'd have to agree with you. It's hard enough walking knee deep in snow, much less trying to build up anything like speed." Marcus nodded toward the patch of grass next to him.

"Take a proper break."

Cable sat down to meditate, with his legs crossed and his eyes closed, not far from the tree where Marcus was.

After a little while he opened his eyes to give the other man a nod of acknowledgment.

"Afternoon."

When a man the size of this one sat next to a person, it was impossible not to take notice. The fact he was also clearly preparing to meditate was enough to raise an eyebrow, although when Marcus really thought about it there were plenty of intensely physical people who had a greater connection with the universe.

"Indeed. I was wondering about your meditation. I find myself needing more and more of it these days. Do you have a particular method you utilize?"

"My preferred method is currently denied to me," Cable replied calmly. "But I make do."

"Oh?" He said, the question hanging in the air for a moment, while Marcus completely disregarded the voice of his long gone mother telling him it was rude to pry. "What is your preferred method?"

Evey had gone into the compound to do laundry earlier that day. While the machines were running, she'd taken the opportunity to get another book or two from the shelf. It'd been in a mood, though, and had only presented her with books she couldn't read in languages she was quite sure were not from Earth. Finally, when one had appeared in English, she'd snatched it, which was probably exactly what the shelf had wanted her to do in the first place. It was a book about vampires, so it wasn't precisely great literature, but it would do.

She left the compound with the book in the pocked of her sundress and the laundry in its mesh bag and immediately spotted Marcus sitting under a tree, clearly thinking quite hard. She approached him obliquely, always careful not to sneak up on him even now.

"Penny for them?" she asked, looking down at him but not crowding him at all. He'd talk if he wished and if he didn't, she'd take the laundry back.

Marcus looked up with a wide grin. "For you, love, they are free." He stood up and with a kiss on the forehead leant over slightly to relieve her of the clean laundry. "Back to the hut?" he asked, not really expecting an answer.

"I was just thinking about Teyla, and all the other people who have disappeared from our lives. Ian, everyone."

She let him take the laundry, of course. She wasn't silly enough to fight that if he wished to carry it. She did take his hand, though, as they walked. If they were to discuss people disappearing she rather liked the comfort of his hand in hers.

"It's unfortunate. I'd hoped I'd be free of sudden and random disappearances once I left London, but apparently not," she agreed quietly.

He squeezed her hand gently. "I never seem to get used to it. I suppose I should be grateful for that but I just can't summon the gratitude."

He paused momentarily to throw the laundry bag over his shoulder, making it easier to carry and maintain the hand-hold with Evey, and they continued along the path.

"We just don't know how long we have here. Or what happens after we leave. What if the island takes one of us? Or both at the same time but we return to our seperate lives?"

Morgan recognized the young man under the tree as a friend of Teyla's. Marcus, she believed his name was. Since they had had Teyla in common, she paused from her daily circuit of the island to greet him. After all she had told Teyla that she meant to come to terms with her humanity and to integrate that with who she had been, and that required making conversation, or at least greeting the island inhabitants from time to time.

So she approached on near silent feet, dressed in stunning white, since the island still refused to give her anything else, and wearing the ruby red Sangraal about her throat, since she had promised Timothy she would not leave the weapon unattended. Rather than speaking directly, she seated herself beside him, in the posture Timothy referred to as the 'lotus'.

Only when she felt herself serenely composed did she address him. "Good afternoon, Marcus is it not?"

Marcus had discretely watched the women as she arranged herself into a position not dissimilar to a common Mimbari posture. Since she showed no other outwardly signs of being linked to the Mimbari culture - and he had not heard that anyone else from his universe had arrived on the island - he assumed it was a coincidence and set the observation aside. He suspected she was older than she appeared, the fact she was able to approach so quietly was also remarkable. His interest was peaked.

"Marcus it is. I'm afraid you have me at a disadvantage."

Chin tilted slightly, Morgan observed Marcus observing her. Her lips quirked into a small, amused half-smile. Whatever he had been in his life before the island, he was one who watched carefully, which disposed her to like him, as she had Teyla, and did both Timothy and Dick.

Hands folding in her lap, she nodded once, a small gesture of acknowledgment. "I am Morgan Le Fay, called Morgan by my friends, of whom Teyla was one. I believe you also knew her."

Teyla. "I did. We trained together frequently, I considered her a dear friend." He sighed softly.

"I was just thinking about her actually, about how almost everyone I had become close to has now gone."
