Marcus was sitting under a tree, within view of the compound he had no intention of entering. He had been walking, pondering everything and nothing, when he realised that the island had taken his last real friend when it sent Teyla back to…where ever it was people went when they left. Everyone he had loved, with the exception of Evey, had gone. ( Read more... )

Cable sat down to meditate, with his legs crossed and his eyes closed, not far from the tree where Marcus was.

After a little while he opened his eyes to give the other man a nod of acknowledgment.

"Afternoon."

When a man the size of this one sat next to a person, it was impossible not to take notice. The fact he was also clearly preparing to meditate was enough to raise an eyebrow, although when Marcus really thought about it there were plenty of intensely physical people who had a greater connection with the universe.

"Indeed. I was wondering about your meditation. I find myself needing more and more of it these days. Do you have a particular method you utilize?"

"My preferred method is currently denied to me," Cable replied calmly. "But I make do."

"Oh?" He said, the question hanging in the air for a moment, while Marcus completely disregarded the voice of his long gone mother telling him it was rude to pry. "What is your preferred method?"

Cable smiled fondly as he answered.

"Upside down."

Truth be told, he missed being able to sneer at gravity the way he used to. There wasn't any technology on the island anywhere near the 'cone of silence' force fields he'd used to levitate himself back at home.

"I see. Upside down. Makes perfect sense." The troubling thing, or what should have been the troubling thing, was that it actually did.

"I have myself on occasion attempted to meditate in zero-gravity environments, the additional blood flow to the brain is considered to enhance the experience significantly. It had never really worked for me, though, the nausea generally crept in before any enlightenment got a chance to."

"The trick is to continue past the nausea," Cable replied, slipping into his lecturing tone of voice. "The only way to achieve anything is to keep going through the weariness and the pain."

"Yes, and the primary thing such an approach would achieve was rather a mess on the consoles, the walls, the ceiling, anyone else in the vicinity..." He laughed at the thought. "On occasion it can be beneficial to consider the practicalities."

"Perhaps," Cable allowed. "I think though that it's not a bad thing to make the occasional mess. If nothing else it teaches you how to clean."

"Sounds quite a bit like something an old teacher of mine might have said." He considered the idea for a moment.

"You havent studied under the Mimbari, by chance?"

"I'm afraid not," he replied. "I was taught by the Askani sect."

"What is, is," he intoned their central tenet with a wry smile.

"Simple, to the point. I like it." He shuffled around just slightly, to face the man a little more.

"I'm Marcus. Lovely to meet you."

"Cable," he offered in return.

He would save judgment on whether or not it was lovely to meet Marcus until later.

"I don't know the Mimbari."

Marcus nodded. "I'm not surprised. I haven't met anyone else here to knows of them, I suppose they are unique to my universe - unlike humans, who seem to be everywhere." He wondered for a moment how best to describe the Mimbari, without giving a lecture on the topic.

"Strong, spiritual, society. Some bone structure on the outside of their heads. They tought me everything I know, and just how much I don't know."

"Not necessarily so," Cable replied. "My knowledge of the other races of my own universe is sadly lacking. With one notable exception we've never really crossed paths."

It was a mistake Marcus had made on a number of occasions. "I see. I take it for granted at times that everyone lives in a time or place where extensive space travel is just a fact of life. Even after over a year on the island, it still seems so ingrained."
